Autodesk Inventor makes sheet metal design quick and effective. Generating flat patterns for fabrication was once a huge undertaking, but in Inventor, creating flat patterns from your 3D parts is as easy as clicking an "unfold" button in the ribbon. See how KETIV's Javier Chavez uses Inventor to create, modify, and document sheet metal parts and assemblies.
Topics include:
Using the Bend Feature
Making Cuts in Parts
Creating and Editing Flat Patterns
And More...

Thanks for a very nice video. I have looked at quite a few and they all seem to forget one requirement. I have a 50 ton MANUAL break. I am able to creat the flat part but need a table or some dimensions to let me know how far the bend lines are from the edges. If I know these, then I ca insert the metal part into the break, measure to the bend line and press the pedal to the metal😉

It would be a help to show a video on how its made on a press break. making the last press break is always a problem the male die has to fit between the already folded edges. So i take it one must has to have the proper length male die for the last press break. A leaf break could be used in some cases.

Sweet informative video, thanks for your time and effort! I am working with plastic (PFA), the tank is 3/8" thick, and at the top, there are weirs (scallops) all around. The four corners have a relief cut, more or less, an area is machined down to 0.1" thick x 2.292 wide with 45 degrees each side of the cut. My question, can Inventor take a 3D model with two thicknesses and unbend those corners and add a seam in the middle of one of the walls, so as to create the flat pattern? The seam is where the weld would be. The corners will bend in a radii... Can this be done?

If I could find a way to unfold a third party (ex. Native Catia) I would be the happiest person ever! I spend hours trying to figure up blank sizes for quoting stamping dies because Inventor only gives me errors unless I designed the part in Inventor.

Hey, I'm planning to create a rectangle "box" of the metal sheets and the thicknesses of the metal sheets are from 1 - 1,5mm (I'm living in EU, Metric system). I have struggled for a long time now with these parts because I don't really know how to create a perfect flange (45 deg) to fit it with the rest of the parts. I really need them because at a top of that there will be a piece of glass, so it will be visible what's inside of that box. Is it possible to make such edges to that point where it fits perfectly with other part as well? I mean the 1-2mm gap between edges when it comes to assembly. Sorry for my english and thank you in advance!

Hi gatrone tv, You can definitely manipulate how everything comes together by editing the sheet metal styles. You'll want to make sure you are using accurate KFactor information to your material and the machines you are using to predict the material behavior at the bends.

Question, how to do the layout for building a sphere with 8 zones the old fashion way with hand drafting tools. 1960's sheet metal work. I did this in '64, but my memory is slipping.. working with a simple flat poster size paper. Starting with a 12 " diameter circle, add vertical & horizontal lines. Begin working on just one section. Upper right ,, then I get confused so I need pattern like before computers. Fighting Alzheimer's trying to refresh my 73 yr old brain by challenging my 9 the birthday thinking of yesterdays. THANKS, maybe I might build the 3 d objects, all 5 of the HEXAHEDRONS. FROM SCRATCH with nothing more than a tape measure & a pen & a long factory cut straightedge. PLEASE HELP this old / young, 73 / 9 VETERAN copimh
