This is one of Reger's most congenial, melodically charming, and succinct, chamber works. and it has a great dramatic flow. It sounds as if Reger surely enjoyed writing it! The "Vivace" is Reger at his wittiest, with a very original "b" section.

Really similar to his quintet in C minor

Beautiful but underrated and underperformed chamber music.

It's amazing how Reger started by imitating late Brahms in his teens but only mastered said late Brahms in his final years. A testament that you can study and copy the craft but you cannot copy the mastery until you achieve it on your own.
