Inverter vs. Transformer MIG Welders - What's the Difference? Kevin Caron

Artist Kevin Caron compares the traditional, durable transformer MIG welders to the new, cheaper inverter MIG welders ...
Caron is working on the bottom of one of his Shitake Agave garden sculptures, comparing his Miller Millermatic 251 MIG welder to Longevity's ProMTS 200 multifunction ("MIG, TIG, Stick") welder.
Caron says there are three big differences that come to mind immediately. Transformers are big, heavy, durable machines that you put on a skid and leave somewhere or put on wheels. Inverter based MIG machines tend to be smaller, suitcase sized machines, something you can pick up and carry. Some are so small they come with a shoulder strap.
You also get more functionality from inverter machines. Caron gives the example of the burn back function on this particular welder. Burn back is when you let go of the trigger and the welder sends a little charge into the end of the wire to burn wire the back to the same length every time, helping make your welds more consistent. His old Miller doesn't have that function.
Another big difference is cost. The ProMTS costs about $1,000 on the Longevity Web site, whereas Caron thinks he spent just under $4,000 for his Miller when he bought it about 10 years ago. Perhaps as important, Caron shows the power cords of both machines and says inverters are much less expensive to run. The ProMTS can even run on 110 volts!
Next, Caron fires up both welders, setting them at 220 volts. The Longevity sets its own wire speed at 137 inches, while Caron has adjusted the Miller to feed about the same, although the Miller's panel says 302. Caron says the two welders just display wire feed differently.
As he gets ready to do some test welds, Caron suggests you listen for the difference in the sound between the two welders. First he welds with the Longevity, then he welds with the Miller.
Next, Caron shows you the welds from the two machines, as well as a few TIG welds, all on the same metal, very thick hardened steel. Caron says he can't see much of a difference between welds from the two MIG welders, although the Longevity's wirefeed may have been a little higher and the Miller's voltage may have been a bit higher. Caron says the two welders seem to be comparable as far as the actual welding.

There's some major differences that were not mentioned in this video. First off, inverters use a series of micro-processors to convert high voltage/low amperage AC input to low voltage/high amperage DC output. Transformers use a step-down transformer and a rectifier to achieve this. Secondly, an inverter machine can be constructed and programmed to switch from CC (constant current) to CV (constant voltage) at a lower cost and in a smaller package than a transformer machine (hence the affordability and portability of inverter multi-process machines). There is one big advantage that transformer machines have over inverters though. They can handle input voltage spikes a lot better. This means you won't have to worry about running them from a non "clean power" generator. Inverters are basically computers, so the inner electrical components are a lot more likely to fail when exposed to relatively minor amounts of abuse.

A lot more welders are going inverter because they are so flexible. Advanced pulse, advanced arc, etc like Everlast has at reasonable prices is only going to get better.

I'm no expert, but to my knowledge inverter welders share technology with switching power supplies (SPS). A microchip adjusts the output voltage continously to the desired spec, so it is much more stable than with a transformer. This is a big advantage compared to the massive voltage drop of an iron core transformer while welding. So even a varying input voltage does not matter too much I think. For example, modern phone chargers (also SPS) can operate at a large input voltage range between 100 - 240 volts due to this technique. But in terms of "how bulletproof is a welding machine" I would favor a classic transformer machine over a modern IGBT.

The suggestion that inverter electronics are more prone to failure is an uninformed opinion. Look around you electronics everywhere in everything with very few issues. Auto dark helmets have electronics and get slammed around all over on the daily with no issues.

Inverter machines cost MUCH less to make and a hell of a lot less to ship, just like the difference between CRT and non-CRT computer displays. That's great for manufacturers because they use a lot less expensive copper and heavy steel.

I bought a Longevity mig/stick welder about 4 years ago, and it has been a damn good machine! I have had zero problems with it. I like it because I can use it in my shop, or throw it on my service truck and use it in the field. Another great thing is its cost.... i can replace this welder every 5 years and still have less in it than a Miller or Lincoln..

Nicely explained...I would like to add my tuppence worth..Being a retired welder I thought i'd ditch my 2 old transformer migs.( 3 phase and a mono ) i'd had for about 30 yrs and buy an inverter type to save space and electricity and enter the 21st century... and I guessed I wouldn't use it that much anyway... Well now 5 yrs and 2 dead inverters later (not cheap and nasty ones either).. I'm looking out for an "old school" second hand machine....Just sayin...

If for anything when it comes to suppliers I prefer the known companies that have been around for a long time, even if it costs a little more money. Miller, Hobart, Lincoln, Smith, Victor, and Smith. If for anything I can get accessories, parts, and service at my Local Welding Supplier, or a big box store for consumables.

In mig welding I actualy like transformer welders more. I did comparison betwen 4000€ hi-tech inverter mig (broke twice in first year of use) and 1500€ transformer mig welders (working 8hr per day for 4 years). They were very close in spray arc mode, but in shorc-circuit arc I liked transformer mig more. So realy why pay more for the same thing. Both welders were made in EU.

cebora 350A pulse mig and varstroj 330A transformer mig. btw we use cebora mostly for thiner aluminium and some brazing with CuSi3 wire, where pulse mig is the way to go. But for anything else I would go with cheaper and more reliable transformer mig. Some newer cheaper chinese inverter migs are cheap, but i haven't try any of them. But we actualy have 350amp chinese tranformer mig and it welds great, the only thing that died in few years of use is torch (came with cheap torch).

My Longevity 200sx worked great-- for a short time. Love the HF starts. But then it would cut out after a very short time. The problem was misdiagnosed and after that was figured out, the only way to get it fixed is to ship it back. Never used it much and never worked it under heavy amps. That is the gamble with Chinese welders. One I lost.

A transformer machine will work forever, but all that copper costs a lot and weighs a ton. These days, something that's cheap to build and transport is what sells. A properly made inverter machine will last a long time, but will eventually fail because certain components, like filter capacitors, have a finite life span. I still would rather weld with ( and CARRY) an inverter welder.

This comparison is missing a critical point; capacity. Does the longevity weld everything the Miller does? Duty Cycle? Will it last as long? That really should've been included.

You are comparing junk to a real welder with one-side information. There is no free lunch. Used every day hours on end, iron that is thicker than 1/16 the longevity will come near the miller. Why did you waste your time trying to fill us with BS. Real welders with the real places of business will obviously see through and see this as your weird.

I have a question out of curiosity.. Could you use a propane torch (basic camping torch with bottle) to shield the oxygen out of the weld, so to speak... meaning could you weld within the propane flame to shield against oxygen? If I had the flame pointing directly at the work area and then welded within that flame. Wouldn't that create a NON oxygen environment capable of a non failing weld?

For the occasional hobbyist the Chinese inverter will work well if they don't get a dud, then good luck with the customer support. I have welded long welds all day long with my miller 252 and have been using it in a light fabrication environment for several years without it ever shutting down to overheating or any other problems. If these were both in daily use which one would be around in ten to fifteen years so it all depends on how much you intend on using them and how dependable you need them to be.

Inverters use a lot less energy out of the wall they also have a shorter shelf life they may last five years before burning out they’re physically smaller the more adjustable. Transformer bass machines will pretty much last till your grandchildren inherit it uses a lot more power out of the wall and they’re not quite as adjustable as inverters and they’re definitely larger. And make sure all of your electrical connections are tight on your inverters because they do not like electrical fluctuations they will fry and if you use inverters on generators make sure the generators are far larger than you required to run the inverter otherwise the electrical fluctuations will fry it

IGBJT and VMOSFET welders chew the same current as an older transformer welder. Transformer eff = 90%, Half Bridge inverters eff = 90%. The inverter has big capacitors which will dry out and fail in a few years in a hot workshop. The Miller transformer machine uses a choke for most of its stabilisation. Transformer welder has no electrocution hazard. Inverter welder from China has high potential of electrocution if it uses just enamel insulation on the output transformer. Inverter cooling fan must run fast and noisy. If not, the inverter will overheat fast. Both welds will be identical. If it's in a workshop, transformer with rectifier and choke is foolproof. If you need to carry it, go inverter. gm2020

So, do you get better duty cycle out of transformer based? Kind of was expecting a pro/con to each type.
@everlastgenerator
@everlastgenerator 10 жыл бұрын
***** Good video Kevin. As far as duty cycle, overall, you'll find most inverters carry a better duty cycle than the equivalent transformer, whether its MIG or Stick. You'll seem some parallel duty cycles in TIG on some machines, but overall inverters do have better duty cycles than transformers. A transformer MIG for example like a Miller 211 has a low duty cycle, almost unmeasureable at 200 amps...but a 200 amp inverter MIG may be 35% or better. Something like the transformer Millerdial arc 250 has a 30% duty cycle at 225A. In contrast the PowerARC 300 has a 60% duty cycle, and the PowerARC 200 has 60% as well. The buzzbox 225/125 Lincoln tombstone has barely a 20% duty cycle at maximum amps and only puts out 12 5 amps on DC at 20%. The Lincoln precision TIG 225 (Xformer) has a duty cycle of 100% at 90 amps. The inverter Everlast PowerTIG 225 has a 100% duty cycle at 130 Amps...

IMO Transformer MIG have always been better than inverter machines. Yeah salesmen remember to hype new models duty cycle getting better and better. Still many of them "surprice surprice" seem to fry their circuit boards in heavy use. Also transformers obviously withstand dust, shocks etc. much better than inverters. But have to admit that inverters are nicely compact machines and in Tig use they're good machines. Of course inverter MIG is also ok, for sheetmetal works and such, but I'd never get one for even moderately heavy Mig welding.

jothain The most favored heavy shop and field use units such as the Miller XMT 304/350 and the Miller's MIG 350P have an unequalled success and lifespan. They are being used everyday in rough service conditions. Lincolns invertec series is not much different. Even some of the newer engine drives are featuring chopper (a poor man's inverter) technology, and even inverter based technology and are seeing heavy abuse. Transformers don't withstand shocks better. Miller drop tests their inverters from a 10ft fall. I don't think they do that with transformers. There's no reason to pick them up (transformers. Some of the transformers use wood framing inside around certain parts. Even Miller has transformed their new syncrowaves into inverters. Everlast has been in a steady improvement program to make the units more resilient, and is now we've been seeing the results. Inverter MIGs are some of the best arc producing units, especially with arc force control...again you just have to weld MIG with a XMT 304 and most people will throw rocks at their old transformers. I own a transformer MIG, a heavy industrial name brand 270 amp one. I love it, but it doesn't hold a candle to performance like my inverter Everlast for arc stability.

Wanna go against an HTP 2400 at about 220 amps all day long ? How about an old school MM200 from the eighties ? Take the fan home boy. Numbers and specs are cutesy. A shop generally isn't. The Invertec has no business in a real shop.I'm here to make money. The electric bill is a minor annoyance.

Another paid review for an inferior product. Look at the longevity reviews on amazon and you'll see what I mean. I didn't think any welder in the US would actually put a longevity up against a miller. Almost laughable . . . But also pretty sad.

The number one attribute of any welder is how nicely it welds. I have used Italian built DIY transformer style welders that have the current controlled by a movable iron shunt. These work splendidly, they make excellent welds and the slag self-peels. On the other hand the Chinese built GYSmi inverter welder that I bought on the bay deserves to go in a dumpster as there is NO WAY that it equals the old transformer type for ease of use and weld quality. For instance the arc length is so critical that the welding rods need to be cut in half and one has to have steady hands to keep the arc length very short. At the 55 amp setting it will hardly start-up a 2.5 mm rod but at slightly higher settings it lays down too much metal! Its just not nice to use. My "auto darkening" welding masks that don't auto-darken also need throwing out and to be quite frank I am sick and tired of buying "innovative" cr@p that doesn't do what it says on the tin. Unfortunately almost nowhere lets you try before you buy so in effect one ends up buying a pig in a poke. Old British Made "Oxford" oil-cooled transformer sets are impeccable and just the name tells you that it will be a superb welder. On the other hand the new inverter types still don't have much of a track record.

Sadly, K.C., I think this kind of straightforward, 'hands-on' review is just asking for trouble. Dude, you're too open-minded! How DARE you be even-handed! In other words, I think it would attract less knee-jerk hostility if these tests or demonstrations were performed blind, without reference to which bit of kit is in use. Yes, incredibly in this day and age, nationalism, 'pride', prejudice, chauvinism, patriotism, xenophobia and bigotry (all the same thing in this instance) are alive and kicking. To wit: "If it ain't 'Merkin it's gotta be TRASH!" Just read a few of the Comments. Mock, mock, mock. Hate, hate, hate. Japan? China? We don't care! Don't y'all know there's a war on? Dammit, where's mah gun? U!S!A! :-( Good grief. Anything non-American just has to be denigrated, doesn't it. That's very sad. Thanks, K.C. for daring to try something different. Note: a lot of people clearly aren't interested in the technology, just the 'national pride' side of things - because if the Miller was a high-tech inverter and the Oriental machine was an old-school transformer, the Comments would be full of praise for 'Merkin ingenuity, and how those primitive foreigners just ain't got a clue... Also: if you'd spent $4,000 on an inverter instead of $1,000, what kind of results/improvements would that extra $3,000 bring? Greater longevity? Compared to transformers, inverter technology is still relatively new, so who can say? Time will tell. But are you comparing like-for-like? Expensive and cheap? Heavy duty industrial-spec against occasional light domestic use? Apples and oranges? I'm not a pro welder. I've got an old (orange coloured!) transformer welder - just a basic arc/'stick' machine. It was bought new for £60, 38 years ago. Regular, heavy weekly use. Still as good as new. It's a Cifes Nova 142. I think it may be French. Not sure. Can't remember. Definitely not 'Merkin 'cos it's not plastered in ruddy flags. No flags at all, in fact. Not a flag to be seen in my workshop, either. Or in my house. Or anywhere along my street... Hmm. I wonder what message that sends out. Why, no message at all, says she, innocently. Not trying to prove anything... Aw heck, just use whatever you can afford, OK? Welding is fun. Nice work, by the way, K.C.! Futuristic!

And all of them have the components made in China, India, and Mexico. For the Miller all you are buying is some assembly in the US and a large overhead for executive salaries. The logical choice is/are the inverter machines with their smaller size, portability, adaptability, and precision settings for a fraction of the cost of the Miller transformer machines.

Kevin, you're a great guy, but the information in this video really is misleading. You never actually addressed the difference between an inverter and a transformer. For example, the difference in the plug has nothing to do with that.

Also inverters are lighter smaller like kevin said and you can get into the new technology and functions with inverters instead of limiting yourself to less stuff. Plus if it breaks its not another 4000 dollars to replace or 2000 dollars for repair or w/e else.

i know right?!?!?! I myself have an AHP alpha tig 200x. I have been using the tig welding since im in classes for it and i already know quite a bit about stick welding. I actually have an AHP alpha tig 200x machine that i got for 710 bucks all said and done. Can do aluminum and steel and all that good stuff and has pulse and pulse frequency as well as ac frequency up to 200 hz. Great little machine for the price. I been welding for about 3 years in classes and such and i have students who i am in class with who ask me about stuff since im pretty knowledgeable about stick welding and general stuff about the tig. I did tons and tons of research before i even touched a tig torch so that helped a lot. I learned a lot in a short period of time but i had to get the actual practice in so classes were the best way to do that. So here and there i help out the other students in my class if they have questions :)

I wouldn't touch longevity or everlast with a 10 foot pole. So very skeptical of those companies after what I've read on them, especially longevity. They're hobby machines and the companies are paying to be seen in professional looking settings to give them an impression of being what they aren't. Longevity also has a reputation of trying to censor bad feedback on forums. Personally what I would recommend someone is to buy a used quality welder and don't get hooked on all these fancy extra functions which you probably won't be using. Even so you can get fancy functions for a good price. I bought a 90s era kemppi inverter for 500 bucks, 3-phase, 300A, DC stick and TIG with all kinds of functions, slope, 2T, 4T, HF start and lift-arc. Arc-force and other functions for the stick mode. A very solid piece of kit, some of them were sold in the US under the powcon brand back in the day, recognizable because of their metal cover rather than fiberglass covers that US made powcons had. Speaks of their quality though, otherwise powcon wouldn't have licensed them. If I where to look at a new multifunction welder with all tig/mig/stick, the ESAB rebel seems to rule the roost now...But honestly I prefer older, 3phase driven machines, I would have preferred a 3ph transformer over an inverter, but it's what I found in my budget so I am not complaining.

Have had good luck with both company's machines to tell the truth.. Not happy with Longevitys customer service with is why I stopped using their machines.. Everlast has been very easy to work with and other than a bad on/off switch on one machine been rock solid for me. And the customer service with Everlast has been very good. They are even writing their own manuals for the machines in house by a welder that is using that machine.

I just bought a Miller millermatic 211 GMAW welder with a spool gun this spring for aluminum120 / 240 volts 60 Hz you can switch the plug ends between 120 and 240. or keep it at 240 24ga - 3/8 9.5mm single pass. been told by a few people It will weld 1/2 inch 13mm with no problem as long as the metal is at a reasonable temp. Its an inverter unit and is really nice machine for what I have into it. Welder its self was around $1,200.00 USD. This is my first welder so I have some extra cash in extras.
