BLESSED BE!! You all are to be commended for all the carefully planned and meticulously executed (research) work you did on behalf of the King. I'm sure if he had been around he too, would be impressed with the care and reverence lavished upon him. I do have one final question, though. Q: If HM was (supposedly) buried elsewhere why go through all the time, effort and expense to have such a hollow empty 'vessel' made for his body? Learning curve for me, here. I have always assumed that burial locations with the fancy / ornate, effigy / sculptures always contained the bodies. Correct me if I am wrong.

No one knows with metaphysical certitude why Edward the" Black Prince" chose to be buried at Canterbury Cathedral instead of Westminster Abbey, for example, which had become the traditional resting place for the English royal family. Canterbury Cathedral was ,and is, a very important place in English Christian history and is strongly associated with pilgrimage and penance. So its plausible Edward may have had a "death bed conversion" type situation and felt he had many sins to repent for. Or, as he was not actually King he did not "merit" burial at Westminster, even though he died in London. Or not....?

I think that he felt after the najera campaign that he had lost the grace of God. After the campaign things only got worse and it would seem he wanted god's forgiveness for supporting a ruler who supported Muslims and murdered his wife.

There are a lot of royal burials in Westminster Abbey, but its never been the sole royal burial site. When Edward died in 1376, only a minority of royals had been buried at Westminster. Many of the early Norman kings weren't even buried in England, as they felt more attachment to their feudal lands in France. Several of the others are dotted around various English cathedrals and abbeys. Since George III died in 1820, they've all been buried at Windsor Castle. In medieval times, it was popular to be buried at a religious institution you'd donated money to, as the residents would repay the honour by saying regular Mass in your name, which was believed to shorten your time in purgatory. He might have given Canterbury money at some point. Then again, Edward was a very ruthless and feared warrior, so he'd have had ample reason to feel he should do penance as well.

He did seem very penitent and a deep believer during life. The moving and exceptionally inspiring leaders of history always are the ones who may have had little choice to commit evil for perhaps reasons they saw as righteous, but did not want to and deeply feel and try to repent of their sin. I often wonder how He measures those princes and counties and kings and empresses and regents against what amounts to responsibility for much much killing.

@@darthdmc There are a lot of early 'Royal Burials' at Winchester Cathedral, although nobody really knows how many of them were genuine. Historical records certainly suggest that it was a major royal burial site. There are loads of chests full of bones there that have been basically randomly declared to have been those of certain early kings. Whatever way you look at it, there has never been a single established royal burial ground for English royalty- which was the point I was trying to make- the fact that Edward the Black Prince was buried at Canterbury, rather than Westminster wasn't inherently strange or suspicious

@richardtomlinson242

People always say it's because he wore a suit of black armor. However, there is no evidence that he ever owned a suit of black armor. Armor was not made of black metal, nor was it dyed black. His brother John, like Edward, had coat of arms with a black background, but John never developed that title. What's more, is that if you read the physical description of their mother, Phillipa of Hainult, she clearly had the physical characteristics (or in part) of an African woman. Plus Edward was known to the French as 'Le Noir' since early childhood. Long before he picked up a sword to be a brutal warrior. It highlights that he like his mother, had a dark skin tone, possibly more dusky than she. You forget that in the 14th century powerful kingdoms flourished in Africa as well as in Europe, so diplomatic marriages would have taken place regardless of colour. Colour first became an issue in 1492... but was official coded in the second half of the 16th century in colonial North America and Europe.

@@mscott3918 King James I wasn't and King Charles II wasn't. However Queen Charlotte WAS partly descendant from African moors, distantly from a woman called Madragana of Faro. Thanks for your interest in the work. It's great to have people talking about how to fund academic research. This work is NOT publicly-funded. Like much academic research, support for it has been cobbled together from multiple sources. We applied successfully to some (private, not tax payer-funded) small research grants, we persuaded some (private) organisations to lend us expertise or equipment, and we paid for some expenses from our own pockets, because that was what it took to conduct the research we wanted to do. The project is still active; since it lives alongside a lot of other work commitments among our international team, it will be a while longer before we publish (whereupon we will duly thank by name the groups who have kindly funded us). Research takes time, especially when you have to stop to write grant applications!

@@emilypegues4610 Thanks for responding, it's really helpful to be able to give followers this kind of insight into the level of dedication and support that is required in order to carry out this research. Indeed there continues to be a misunderstanding about how the Cathedral itself is funded and most people believe that we receive financial support from the Government like some museums, galleries or heritage sites. They are often quite surprised when they learn that we receive no government funding and that in order to sustain the Cathedral we have to rely on our own revenue streams, donations and patrons. Alongside the work the team and yourself are carrying out we are also researching further into the Black Princes achievements and recently put the shield through a CT scanner. Again, this was funded by externals sources and we paid the NHS in order to use the facilities out of hours so that the work could take place. Between this and many other research projects our understanding of history expands and improves at an unprecedented rate and we are gradually able to dispel some of the myths that have emerged over the years. I guess in someways the work thats taking place today with the help of modern science and technology is the closest we'll get to time travel. Thanks for the excellent work you guys are doing. We are really looking forward to reading the outcomes.

To our knowledge the tomb has never been opened. There are certainly quite a few people who would be keen to open the tomb but this raises a number of moral and conservational questions/challenges, not to mention it's a Royal tomb so it's not that straight forward. As the tomb itself is located in the Trinity Chapel it is most likely that the bones are inside the visible casket as underneath the tomb lay the Cathedral's Crypt. There was one tomb opened during the 1850's, that of Archbishop Hubert Walter, it sit's alongside the Black Prince. Some of the items that were removed will be going on display next year in the Cathedral Crypt (silks, jewellery, silver etc.) but we'll have more on that nearer the time.

Klaus S under the harsh light of hindsight most people don’t come across very well. One reason is that modern society’s values and perceptions don’t sync well with earlier periods. For example we have machines perform a great number of tasks that, in the Black Princes’ era, would have be done by a person. To quote Zoe Oldenbourg “in the Middle Ages, man was the measure of all things”. This fact alone illustrates the perception gap between then and now.

I am in the USA so I have to piece these things together as I have not been to England but this man "the Black Prince" seems to have been mostly virtuous even though he did some big sins. There is less information on him as a far as I can tell than some others less interesting like Charles Stuart II. I get sick of reading he was so shrewd. How does cheating on a wife make one shrewd?

He probably didn't commit all the crimes his enemies accused him of, but he was still quite clearly a very brutal warlord. On campaign in France, he was notorious for using a tactic called 'Chevauchee', which meant burning and pillaging the countryside to destroy the enemy's economy and deny them food and shelter. This meant deliberately targeting the homes and livelihoods of civilians. Anyone who resisted would have been killed, and even many of those who didn't would have died of starvation, disease or exposure.

We will be releasing the papers from the conference soon and this will include information about the tomb investigation, conservation work carried out on the Achievements and also the results of some scientific research on the Black Prince's helm. In the build up to the release of the papers we will also release a short 10 minute film from the conference which will give a taste of what was covered. I know my suggestion would be slightly invasive and not very practical at all. However, wouldn't it have been just as easy for you to solder off some of the bars to make it easier for you to get at the coffin / effigy, more easily? The researchers look ridiculous peering and probing through the bars when they could just as easily take some of them off and re-attach them later after their research is finished. It would seem to me that the more fascinating thing would have been to be able to get close enough (to at minimum) be able to X-ray the inside of the coffin to get a 'picture' of his body. The way the effigy looks and how exacting to detail it is makes one wonder if in fact the gilding wasn't put directly around the body at the time of death and the inside of the coffin serving, instead as a vessel for personal effects. Yest, I know my theory goes against all conventional thinking. However, it's worth a thought or two if for nothing more than thinking-outside-of-the-box conjecture.

@@jackmatthews2961 Yes, it was propaganda, nevertheless a minimum of 300 people were killed because the Bishop changed sides and Edward was very upset about it. There was even a duel between 3 English and French knights that ended peacefully and Edward was content with it to save 80 fighters behind them. Edward could not even walk anymore at that time and used a litter to get inside Limoges. He did not take part of any fighting because he was sick since his tour to Castile.

Hard hats because there were heavy loose boards overhead on the scaffolding. @emilypegues4610
@emilypegues4610 5 жыл бұрын
The gems are missing but the empty *settings* which once held them are still in the crown, so we were able to analyze those settings with XRF. Since the metal used to make the settings for the gems was indeed different from everything else, we discovered that the crown was made in lots of tiny pieces (rather than cast in one piece as it seems on first glance). Our guess is that the missing gems would have been made of enamel, which would have matched other enamel elements in the effigy (sabaton buckles, belt, etc,) and which would have looked very convincingly jewel-like. This would have required much more labor and expense, so understanding that tiny detail helped with figuring out our larger research question about how the tomb was made.
