Libra Group’s Executive Chairman, George Logothetis, joined Dr. Eduardo Padrón, President Emeritus of Miami Dade College, for a keynote discussion titled “Investing for Impact: Navigating the Unique Landscape of Latin America & the Caribbean.” Drawing upon Libra Group’s extensive investments in critical sectors like renewable energy, innovation, hospitality, real estate, and more, the candid conversation covered the Group’s strategic expansion and provided insights into growth opportunities in the region.
George shared his deep connection to Latin America and recounted his first visit to Colombia in 2016, where he met with President Uribe. This visit sparked a decision to expand Libra Group’s business initiatives, philanthropic projects, and the Libra Internship Program to the country and the wider region. Today, the program provides opportunities to hundreds of interns from over 50 countries, including more than 30 past and present interns from Colombia. George also highlighted how his conversation with President Uribe shaped the evolution of Concordia’s on-the-ground work in Colombia, ultimately leading to the establishment of Concordia Americas.
George underscored the transformative impact of Libra Group’s projects in the region, which are driven by innovative partnerships. He highlighted Project Terra, a collaboration with the Arhuaco indigenous peoples of Colombia, and Alma Mater in Panama - a utility-scale solar project in partnership with the University of Panama. This project will make the University the first public university in Latin America to be entirely powered by renewable energy, a significant step towards sustainable development in the region.
In discussing Libra's driving ethos, George highlighted, "People want to become, or be given the opportunity, to become the best version of themselves.” He also recounted anecdotes from past social visits to the region, including a Libra delegation visit to Las Mercedes, a community in the Dominican Republic where 75 families live without access to clean water or electricity, and the efforts of the NGO Nature Power Foundation in facilitating access to these essential services. He also highlighted the work of the Granitos de Paz Foundation in Cartagena, Colombia, which assists vulnerable families in overcoming extreme poverty.
As Chairman of Libra Philanthropies, an independent 501(c)(3) and sister organization of Libra Group, George emphasized the impact of their social initiatives across the region. With a goal of “transmitting IP from the United States and acting as an enabler to empower communities,” the foundation has 10 philanthropic initiatives that support marginalized communities through initiatives such as the Seleni Institute, which works to improve mental health during the family-building years, innovative programs, and helping changemakers tackle unresolved social needs. To date, Libra Philanthropies has positively impacted more than 25 million people and helped accelerate the work of nearly 300 organizations worldwide, including in Latin America.
