I have gained a considerable amount of knowledge - thank you! I've been pondering the reasons behind the relatively high cost of Masters of the Universe Classics. Its no longer the bees knees. Despite being a modern creation, it appears to carry a substantial price tag. Could this be attributed to its exclusivity as an online-only purchase, potentially creating an artificial scarcity? Furthermore, I've noticed a transition from hand-painted eyes to the use of decals, marking a departure from the traditional artistry. This shift seems to reflect a diminishing craftsmanship. I recently watched Scott Ns videos on Spector Creative, where he suggests that the limited production run is a deliberate strategy. He indicates that increasing the quantity might not necessarily equate to higher sales, thus prompting a potential return to an online-exclusive model. However, even considering these factors, the cost of the figures remains notably high, especially given the presence of visible joint pins, which some might consider less refined. Your insights on this matter would be greatly appreciated. He predicted MOTU Orgins will fail at retail in April.Masters of the Universe Classics (MOTUC) is a toy line that pays homage to the classic Masters of the Universe franchise, featuring action figures based on characters from the original toy line they way they were depicted on the promos. This is the argument I get. Limited Production: Many collectors' items, including action figures, are produced in limited quantities. This scarcity can drive up the price as collectors are willing to pay a premium to own something rare. For your consideration motuc price guide from a decade ago. www.he-man.org/forums/boards/showthread.php?237112-An-Unofficial-MOTUC-Price-Guide! @@ReservedInvestments

Really think it depends on not only the brand, but the particular item/product line. Modern Star Wars featuring certain films still sells very well, but other figures in the wave from other films will end up peg warming forever. Likewise, Hasbro has some very successful Transformers products out from their Haslab program and seem to be getting enough collectors to bite on those. Now certain ones they release in stores seemed to have missed the mark.
@nxtime5967 Жыл бұрын
Im sure Barbie will get a bit of a jolt from the movie, but the movie is itself a sign of the times for the brand. The main audience will be adults, it going to be heavily referencing older products. Not exactly the type of thing aimed at a new/younger generation of fans/potential collectors.

True but in stamps it only takes about 20 serious collectors to enter the market with real money to move it. Also you can build a great stamp collection for a fraction of the cost of about 20 years ago. The other problem with stamps is the younger generation would deem half the stamps as figures who are problematic socially now(Jefferson, etc.). And now all states are forcing tax on stamp auctions, so you have a 30% premium(20%hammer+10%sales tax), which you can't make money on anytime soon. I still enjoy collecting them :) but try and stay to the xf+ of the market.

Where I am, I can get old stamps for about 40-50% of face value. These stamps are still legal for use on postage. I'd say this is the best investment in stamps you'll find... but also illustrates the decline in stamp collecting (in a general sense). Granted, it does look funny when the entire envelope (front and back) is covered in them, as they were low denominations, and the stamps read 'Merry Christmas, 1976'. Does the job though. 😀

Pyrex is actually useful, so it will retain it's value over something to just look at. As far as Barbie is concerned, it seems to be older women, my wife is a doll collector. At her doll club, the average age of the women is at least 15 years older than she is.
@Claudius_Nero Жыл бұрын
That argument\justification only holds for the bottom end of a market. No one pays 10k for a pyrex measuring bowl because of its usefulness. That's like paying thousands of dollars for a stamp with the argument that it will retain its value because you can still mail a letter with it. Good luck with that way of thinking.
@davidallen8891 Жыл бұрын
@Tony A all depends. A Pyrex bowl with a crack in it is probably near worthless even though you can still use it. A working antique gun is worth more than one that doesn't fire, but is a lot more dangerous. No one would use a collectible stamp for mailing because once it's cancelled, the value goes down. So please stop making me out to be some kind of absolutist.

A few years ago here in Australia there was a promotion where an exact reproduction (box and all) of the first Barbie was done in very limited quantities and was sold at the original price of... $1. It was advertised on the radio the evening before. I heard it on the radio on my way home from work. I went immediately to Myer and a line was already forming. There were less than 100 - or there were 100... can't remember and the doll is at my other home so I can't check. I have no idea what it is worth today if anything, but its a great story... a $1 Barbie doll! My wife and I have a small collection of the platinum edition dolls plus ones like Karl Lagerfeld and Coco Chanel etc. We have them in my wife's dressing room in display cabinets along with her bags and other stuff she collects. As a guy, I quite like them. They're very well done. I think Barbie will suffer for a while... at least until people realise that Funko Pops are utter rubbish and they might come back... who knows..? I mean they were sprouting the death of vinyl right.?! Barbie might have the same fate and end up in the same situation for the same reasons as vinyl. What I do know however, my three children, son included, are squabbling already over which of the barbie dolls and record albums they will get when we are gone..!

Even though they are early craftsman cast iron and stainless power tools, and some vintage vises- they didn't go up at all. I didn't more than a grand into it, so no big deal, but I'd be lucky if they were worth $1500 right now, and most of that 4-500 in equity was built into the tools, because I bought them cheap.

If they want to bring these franchises back, perhaps get someone who honors the originals instead of trying to put their own spin on it. The new He-man was basically a teela show. To rope children back in, perhaps bring in the parents of the kids in too. If the parent doesn't like it or support it, they will not introduce it to their kids. Pretty easy to see why these attempts keep on failing.

You are definitely correct though....it all comes down to getting younger collectors into a market. Years ago in the late 80's and to mid 90's...lithograph tin toys (Japan) were still pretty hot ....not so much now. Star Wars stuff was starting to get hot then...and remains fairly popular. Some things are timeless and will always do well.....some things not so much. I still sell Beatles stuff quite well...Elvis.....well...not so much. Star Trek was dead for a long time....then the movie came out....now it's kind of stagnant again..but hardcore Trek collectors still do buy. Fiestaware ain't so hot either......you'll sell it...but it's not a great investment for any kind of long term.

I would like to hear your opinion on luxury watches in this context. Gen z and partly millenials grew up in a world where a wristwatch is an obsolete piece of tech. So, will rolexes bought new in retail at 4x msrp during the covid mania ever get reach that high again, considering some models are down like 50% already
@harrisonosirrah Жыл бұрын
Buying anything at 4x retail is a mistake. So those people will likely lose out or have to wait decades. High end watches in general will maintain as a market i think though. People wear watches for lots of reasons and checking the time is only one of them.
@jamespingel8730 Жыл бұрын
Just speaking anecdotally here, but I'm someone at the younger end of the millennial age group who got into collecting watches in the last few years. Rolex will probably never be for me, but I'm interested in microbrands like RZE, Formex, Pitzman, Zelos, etc. I'd like to have an Omega someday too. And I'm definitely not the only one. Rolex/AP/Patek are all well outside my price range, and from the outside looking in they look like a great way to carry a decent chunk of wealth around with you (possibly even stealthily if it's not a diamond encrusted rolex) or a way to immediately tell everyone in the room that you are richer than they are (or you belong in certain rooms). But that's just not what I'm wearing a watch for. I first started wearing a watch in college because I didn't have a smartphone yet and I needed to know the time to catch public transportation. I got my first watch and I liked it, but I looked around and saw 5+ different people wearing the same watch every day. I wanted something different, hence my dive into microbrands. I've been wearing them for years and I've never run into someone else who's even wearing the same brand as me, let alone the same watch. They don't attract much attention either, except from other watch people (which is a good thing in my book). In all the time I've been wearing watches, I've been asked what I have on my wrist and where they can get it exactly once. I don't flip/sell most of my pieces, only two out of 15 so far, and I managed to not lose too much money on them. There are microbrands out there that have upwards trajectories, but I buy watches I want to wear first and foremost. If I don't want to wear it for a long time, then it's time to sell.

I know this is mostly about western toy brands and franchises but I find it funny that the Japanese toy brands seem to keep growing Figma and Nendoroids are a bit more premium than your average target or Walmart level toy but the IPs and brands big or small they keep getting keeps bringing in the attention The irony of Barbie seemingly whittling out when Goodsmile announced a Barbie Nendoroid recently. Goodsmile also has like major western brands like marvel, star wars, Disney etc. And of course all the popular anime not scooped up by Bandai Shawn is a 100% right tho, I don't really see kids getting toys, I see them on phones, tablets or playing the switch. They're not as interested in toys especially for older brands from like the 80's-2000's. I've thought about why there's so many premium and limited action figures, model kits and figurines and it's because the market has mostly shifted towards young and older adults who have the disposal income and can afford something like a $400+ Soul of Chogokin GaoFighGar from GaoGaiGar Final lol Great video as always

Collectors of all ages are still obsessed with these Mattel creations, so you're completely off base by saying they're a bad investment. If you search for "Barbie collection" or "Motu collection" on KZbin, you'll find hundreds of videos dedicated to them. However, if you search for "antique glass or bicycles," you'll be lucky to find even 10 videos. This clearly demonstrates that Barbie and Motu are still in high demand. And you know this, that's why you chose the thumbnail you did.

Uh, watch the video again. Your first statement is incorrect as well as your comment. Schwinn and Pyrex have nothing to do with Barbie or MOTU. It’s amazing how some of you think… I’m honestly thinking of pinning this comment. The lack of critical thought is incredible.

@@ReservedInvestments I hope you understand that I am just joking around. Can you please refrain from threatening me? Instead, if you think I am wrong, kindly correct me. I noticed that you seem surprised by the way people think. Do you find it difficult to take criticism or a joke? Please enlighten me with your knowledge. You mentioned that I lack critical thinking, but I was only comparing material objects as investments. I did not mean to disrespect you, but it seems like you jumped straight to threatening me instead of correcting me. Let's take a deep breath and remember that this is just criticism on the internet. I never intended to disrespect your character; I was only comparing material objects.

@@ReservedInvestments "I'm honestly thinking of pinning this comment." It can come across as a threat. Perhaps the intention behind the statement was to acknowledge the value of the comment and potentially highlight it for others to see. However, it could have been communicated better. Regarding the direction of the conversation, it's important to stay respectful and focused on the topic at hand. If you feel like someone is being sarcastic or disrespectful, it's best to address it in a calm and constructive manner. Avoiding personal attacks and staying on topic can help ensure that the conversation is productive and educational for all involved.

The surest collectors market would be the airsoft toy gun manufacturing industry a) Its still a thriving hobbyist market b) there are ltd to very rare vintage airsoft IFs & RIFs ( I dare anybody to see IF they can pick up an JAC Battlemaster from 1984 or MGC Calico M1000 at the local wall mart for under 500 $s, how bout the Strawberry Milkshake pink Vorpol Bunny anime themed Dakota .45 ACP?) based on old & new weapon platforms of real world/fictional firearms and c) there's no shortage of airsoft manufactures to answer the demands of every airsoft hobbyist be they private gun collectors, airsoft players/skimishers or both old and young alike.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion, G Money. Shawn merely highlighted that children's spare time is being taken up by technology. It doesn't automatically follow that they'll want to 'invest' in digital collectibles - unless their name is Timmy, Jnr. 😉

@@Johndeplume.Yeah, kids are more interested in Fortnite character skins than they are NFTs, haha.
