Pete, interested in your question on ‘general rules of thumb’ for drawdown from various wrappers, given that most people will have several pots; SIPP, ISA and legacy DB schemes etc. You have made it clear previously that Tax considerations should not dictate investment decisions, but doesn’t it make sense to maximise drawdown for the lower rate band in each financial tax year and therefore potentially avoiding a higher rate band in later years, for example when DB plans may become active. Any surplus above the planned budget can be recycled into an ISA to provide an additional tax free income in later years?

Absolutely, Nigel - I don't dispute any of that. Every case is unique, and planning like that is where a decent adviser can really add value. But it is possible to DIY is simplification is done beforehand, using simple rules, just like the one you describe

Where do you invest? With returns on ISA etc are so low.

An ISA isn’t an investment, it’s a wrapper or account. What matters is what’s inside the ISA. Cash ISAs offer rubbish returns, as you say, but other forms of ISA, especially the stocks and shares ISA, can offer great returns, albeit with some risk. Do your homework and keep learning!
