Fun fact, seeing as Hong Kong was to be given to the UK in perpetuity, they were, technically speaking, under no obligation to give it back to the Chinese. However much of Hong Kong's critical infrastructure such as water treatment planets were built in the New Territories, which were under the ninety nine year lease, making any thought of keeping Hong Kong proper and only giving the new territories back rather untenable as the Chinese could simply shut off supplies to the city.

The video is quite accurate but however missed out the fundamental issues that caused all these chaos in these days-distrust of the Hong Kong people towards the PRC due to their ancestral roots. Most of the Hong Kong people are descendants of refugees, asylum seekers and capitalists who fled from China after 1949. Many of them had suffered during the early days of the reign of Communist China, where the nightmare of famine, political prosecutions and confiscation of private properties still haunted them.

(I don't know what century this was but it was a long time ago) So Britain secretly stole the sliver form China and they give it back. Eventually China realise this and some war happened (I don't know about the war) and after it China and Britain agreed on the Hong Kong exchange, basically Britain would keep Hong Kong for I think 100 to 200 years then Britain would give it back to China. That's what I know so far. (I almost forgot about the fact that the British gave Opium to China even though it's not safe,I think the opium was meant to be a drink even though I think it's not safe,I think for some reason the British wanted the Chinese to be addicted to the opium.)

HK has a few phases, it was only a small dinky place with a few people living before southern Song. After Southern Song, that’s when it’s actually part of Guangzhou. Li Shimin, the founder of Tang, which was before Song, had a few units stationed here but it’s not named a place yet. HK since being recognized and part of guangzhou in Southern Song, just a dinky little fishing harbour until Ming when Europeans started to stop by here on the way to India or Persia. Then in Qing, started a trade route for tea and porcelain. However, with Europe entering the height of their Colonial Era, trade goods here seem like a rip off since all the other goods they got from other places were “a lot cheaper”. So they tried to negotiate with Kangxi and Yongzheng. In Kangxi Era, they tried to gain influence by having many missionaries and giving interesting things like a Western clock to the Emperor. But since China had already an established culture and religion, getting people to understand Western Science and religion was a long stretch and Kangxi was annoyed and didn’t like Westerners pestering him on religion and trade. And his son Yongzheng even closed off trade to the West and tried to burn churches that were building at the time. What hit the nail in the coffin was Qianlong, Yongzheng’s son, who responded to George III by saying we’ve got everything we need we don’t need to change anything to accommodate to your needs. That’s when England decided to set up posts with merchants in Guangzhou and mass produce Opium from the East India Company so that they can really make a profit off of local Chinese. China after Qianlong was struggling massively on corruption and losing money fast. Qianlong’s grandson, Daoguang, has to pick up his dad, Jiaqing, corruption mess and continue the ban on Opium while dens and brothel still on the rise. By then, it’s too little too late, the dumping of boxes of Opium, the bad foreign relations and translation, meant China has to pay debt. So for the first time Daoguang had to not only pay back England, he had to for the first time give a piece of land to England. It was very humiliating. But, at the same time, all of that could’ve been prevented had China been more open minded to learning other nations. For example, Daoguang wasn’t aware that at the time, England wasn’t just a small isle off of Europe, at the time England already took 1/4 of the world’s land mass and put a flag on it. If he had been more aware and had been more willing to learn, none of this would’ve happened. However, for the relations with England, it’s an entire learning opportunity open for them to choose but they didn’t, HK later did though, you know, during the Cold War era.

China is taking away the autonomy of the region. A Hong Kong bill almost passed that basically allowed them to give criminals to China who is well known for breaking human rights laws. The democratically elected leaders of Hong Kong were thrown out by China without good reason. The Hong Kong people said screw that and protested with almost 1/4 of the population protesting, ringleaders were imprisoned for public order crimes, police brutality all over the shop, smear campaigns in pro-chinese newspapers. Some protesters even stormed the Government building for a little while. Protesting has carried on since then but with threats of arrests and prison time has forced everyone into being more careful. There is violence between those who say the protests will just lead to a faster anexation by China and the protesters. From what I know protesting is carrying on even today, basically its a massive shit show.

Have in mind that Nanyue (Nam Việt) was where the the Vietnamese Kinh people originally came from. All of that land was theirs before the Chinese pressured then to move south to today’s northern Vietnam.

Why dont you mention why it was called “The opium wars”? I feel it’s quite relevant to the background of this. I feel you present this as piracy and protectionism alone was the reason for the war. Obviously the Local government was to blame; but I do feel the Brits’ actions leading up to the opium wars should be presented.

Should be noted a lot of people flocked to Hong Kong due to is special colonial status. So you find a lot of Anti-Imperialist and later Anti-communist flocking to the region. Now not all of them where positive towards Britain but a lot of them saw it as a land of opportunity. So is not that odd that they might still harbour the same views of the even generations later about the city. Also remember that the population before it was a colony was rather modest and that the region had always been in the outskirts of the empire. Meaning you have a population that is not super loyal to the imperial court to being with and on top of that get all those migrations I mentioned before. And that not even mentioning the many migrations that had been to the region before colonial rule mixing up the population. Say what you will about British colonial area. In some ways it very much made Hong Kong form is own identity.

Only the young who didn't even live under British rule actually want British rule 'back', the old knew the British were oppressors who didn't respect the Chinese populace and while Beijing's adminstration is scary, would prefer to stay out of the imperialist British hands
@Cythil5 жыл бұрын
@@omni5640 Not the general impression I have gotten. But I might be wrong. And I am willing to change my mind if I am presented with enough information that supports you claim. But what I feel most people of Hong Kong want is mainly continued self government and deciding there on fate. Not really go back to the British way of doing it. After all they was a colony. But to have more repesentation in there government. Right now the influence is not directly in people hand but in a ruling elite. A lot of old companies having a lot of power. Feels a bit like how City of London works plus some Beijing influence on top of that. (If your not familiar with how City of London works then I recommend you look it up. Is a very archaic structure that dates back to the middle ages which also give companies and guilds a lot of power.)

As I understand it, the 99 year lease on the New Territory's was intended to be for perpetuity to by the British. The 99 years where seen at the time as good as perpetuity. I am sure that the Chines did not think so however. But is interesting to note as what mindset the British had when they conquered these areas. And yeah. It really was a conquest like is noted in the video. The fancy language they use to support there claim is just that.

One thing to understand is that the Chinese view the concept of "race" quite differently from the West Throughout most of its history, Chinese people are loyal to the place or state that they and their ancestors were born in Before China was unified by the Qin dynasty, there was no such thing as a Chinese or Han or whatever race People simply thought of themselves as 趙人,燕人,楚人,etc Meaning people of Zhao, people of Yan, people of Chu, etc Even after the unification of China under Qin and also the subsequent Han dynasty, people still thought of themselves as ethnically belonging to those kingdoms of old There was, again, no such concept as a Chinese race It was only during the Tang dynasty (after China had gone through centuries of upheaval which saw unprecedented displacement of people due to warfare and waves and waves of human migration and assimilation - which rendered the concept of someone belonging to one of the olden kingdoms obsolete) that a semblence of "Chinese" identity was forged, in this case as 唐人,or people of Tang This was perhaps the first time in Chinese history that people living in China started considering themselves as being ethically similar This trend continued with the Song dynasty, where people thought of themselves as 大宋子民 or children of Great Song Even then, their concept of "race" was still tied to statedom - consider that the people Song hated the Jurchens from the Great Jin dynasty which occupied northern China, although racially speaking, there wasn't too much that was radically different between them As you can see, Chinese people placed much more importance in the state that one belonged to, rather than some kind of racial identity based on skin colour, eye shape, hair type, or whatever So, in current times, when someone wants to argue that something is or isn't Chinese, well, that person is simultaneously right and wrong

Accurate. Like Italians wouldn’t claim sovereignty over the lands in Europe just because the Roman Empire had conquered them long ago.

In Vietnamese the "100 Yue" is pronounced as the "100 Viet". Then the kingdom of Nan Yue = Nam Viet, which is where the name of Vietnam comes from. Present day southern China was conquered, colonized and sinicized by the Chinese empires, just as in Europe the present day France or Spain was "barbarian" and then conquered and romanized by the Roman empire.
@mitismee5 жыл бұрын
can you please also indicate 100 yue which literally translated to 100 viet tribe. the modern day vietnamese are one of the last "yue" people left out of the 100 . and Nan yue king dom which also translate to south viet kingdom aswell. and the modern viet people nowaday does recognize it as one of their first dynasty .
