My ex had a shock collar on his dog. She got accidently pushed over the line when we were sledding and we didn't realize. It looked like she was getting electrocuted, and we didn't know what was happening. It was terrifying. We got her back over the line but she wouldn't go into the yard at all after that. I think ppl need to understand the power these things have and how cruel they can be

Tbh it sounds like the dog had an underlying issue or they had it set to an insanely high voltage. I don’t use shock collars but I think they can be necessary in some cases. The issue with them is most people are uneducated on them. You should always test the collar on yourself because it shouldn’t be hurting the dog. Used humanely it’s supposed to just send them an alert, it’s moreso the sudden feeling surprises them than it shocking and hurting them. I’ve seen people use it mostly to recall

Neighbor with 2 huskies tried that collar. Female, about 3yrs & male about 2yrs. The female ran in it refused to go outside anymore. The male just kept running into it & yelping. Needless to say they didn’t last long.

i once went to a family friends house to dog sit, and they decided to put a shock collar on her before they left so “she wouldn’t bother the neighbors” with her barking (she barely barked), and didn’t tell me. the dog barked when i walked in, like any dog would, and she got shocked, i freaked out thinking something was wrong until i saw the collar. she thought i shocked her, wouldn’t even let me walk her until the the 3rd day, and was aggressive out of pure fear. i took it off of her immediately. she was barely a year old.

Reminds me of an "electric fence". My grandparents raised cattle & had an electric fence. My sister (10) & I (12) were going swimming in their pond & had to go under/over the fence to get there. My grandfather told us that it was off. I crossed under the fence first. When it was her turn she refused to move stating that she was afraid it might be on. I reached for the wire to show her it was fine. My plan had been to fake her out by pretending to get shocked. I was all ready to ham it up when, I grabbed it & let out the loudest most ear piercing squeal anyone had ever heard. I even peed. Talk about instant karma. She laughed for what seemed like hours. Everyone was laughing as I screamed "GRANDPA!!!" Now I can laugh about it, but at the time I refused to speak to any member of my family.

Have you ever tried it? It doesn’t hurt. I’ve personally tried it and it just feels weird and uncomfortable. Collar training is one of the BEST things you can do to teach a dog obedience. It could also save their life someday. So don’t go on here saying it has some horrible impact on the dog, it doesn’t.

The collar I used for training my Mal had levels, and also could make a tone instead of a shock. 1-100 you could select. Putting it on my wrist I couldn’t feel anything until 14, yet setting it at 8-9 was enough to get his full attention and cease whatever ‘bad’ activity he was engaged in. They’re not meant to electrocute the dog 😆, that wouldn’t at all be effective to train with…and a dog will not respond well if they don’t trust you or you abuse them.

Fun fact about invisible fences: if the dog goes far enough past the line it stops getting shocked. Learned that as a delivery driver. Nothing scarier than seeing that sign at a house you have to stop at...especially with a beware of dog sign right next to it🙃

I think most people know this...or at least guessed it. The alternative being a dog continues to get shocked until he returns. I've had some smart dogs in my life but I imagine they would all wear that shock battery out first.

I work for invisible fence, that’s only some fences. They have ones that go on a timer instead of the distance. Make sure runners can’t head for the hills

​@hebiweza7046 I know petsafe is one that works off a timer for their wireless in ground fence. But the digital wifi one only goes by distance because the collar can no longer communicate with the receiver. I think I remember it being 30 seconds because they don't want the dog to be afraid to come back.

Wow...a timer? I didn't know that. I don't think I like the idea of my dog getting zapped for 30 seconds...or even 10 seconds. Do you remember the "old school" way of housetraining? You had to catch him in the act because their attention span is shorter than a teenager on the last day of school. This might be something to consider before using a timed shock collar. None of my dogs would ever be smart enough to "go home" to stop the shock.... WHILE being shocked... especially when you consider that the first few seconds will be all they remember....the rest of that shock seems kinda cruel.

Most people don’t like it, I train my doggies right. Most dogs aren’t smart enough to think maybe I should not chase this deer into the Highway, now let’s say this dog is 100 pounds and belongs to a little old grandma who weighs about 70 pounds soaking wet. Some people can’t afford a physical fence so this is a lot more affordable. And go ahead and tell me someone shouldn’t be owning whatever dog they want cause I thought this was America 😂. Doesn’t mean they are a good match but I’m here to help not judge.
