Thanks, this video eased my mind about using this packing. I was extremely unsure as to how to use it and what it was even for when my wound care nurse ordered it for me.

What are the instructions when doing it yourself from home? I was discharged from hospital (drained abscess likely MRSA) and I was only told verbally to replace it every 2 days with a q-tip. Literally no other details not even to get sterile ones. She also gave me the same bottle of the strip to take home to keep using, but the bottle says to only use once? Now I’m confused and can’t find anything online

In home care, it is ok to keep using the packing. Just be as sterile as possible. Personally, I would use sterile cotton tip applicators . When packing, remember to fluff packing into the wound, don't stuff. In addition, I would use an antimicrobial on the packing to help with infection. (Diluted vinegar is great) I have a video on how to make it at home

Is the dressing drying out? That may be causing the pain.

So when using iodoform DO NOT USE ADHSIVE WIYH FOAM ISLAND DRESSING. USE HAYZE ONLY. correct?
@NurseAlyssa39

You can use any appropriate coverdressing with iodoform as long as the foam doesn't have an antimicrobial.

Thank You so much for this video, & your time to do this.. My husband is a diabetic he has infection. The hospital said he can come home early if he had someone to help him. Not sure what kind of surgery he had. But they charge his bandage everyday.. I am very nervous doing this. I don't want anything to go wrong or get bacteria in the whomb. I get anexiry doing new things for the first time

Before leaving the hospital, they should show you how to do the dressing change . Then have you do it before leaving. If you have any concerns or need some help over a live zoom you can book with me here thewoundconsultant.com/ola/services/do-you-have-questions-about-your-wound-or-dressing-options

After my excision of a cyst, my doctor told me to go to a dermatologist to get the packing removed. By my discharge nurse told me that, over time, the packing will come out by itself as my excision site heals. Is it ok if it just leave the packing in and let it eventually come out on its own? Thanks Nurse Alyssa.

Hi, I have a tunneling wound from a dog bite and my nurse packed this stuff after soaking it with dakins solution. It kept turning yellow in the beginning so they kep adding more strips in the dakins solution until we found a strip that stopped turning yellow and then packed it in. It's irritating more than previously. So it shouldn't be prepared this way? My wound had no infection and this was around 40 hours after the dog bite

Dog bites are at high risk of infection so an antimicrobial is needed 100% with that said the plain packing bottles look just like the iodoform packing . Only one antimicrobial shoukd be used as they can cause a chemical reaction. Iodine (iodoform would be a great choice on its own as it has a drying effect for the excess drainage. Also I would have the would assessed as incress exudate can be a first sign of infection

A friend has asked me to repack his surgery incision for him at home. I've never done or seen it done. Most of the video demonstrations are on dummies. He knows it is going to hurt and has all the supplies. I'm going to have to do it in a few hours as per his instructions from the hospital when discharged. Money, distance and other considerations are why this is being done at home. Not ideal but the way it is. When you got lemons you make lemonade. I'm not looking forward to doing this.

Main thing to know when packing fluff it into the wound not stuff (it should be fluffy touching all the edges but nothing to cause excess pressure. go slow, take your time, your friend should take some pain medications 30 mins prior.

@@NurseAlyssa39 thankyou for your reply. Already done and I stuffed it. Tomorrow's another day and I Will do better. The pros that did at the hospital stuffed him like a thanksgiving turkey also. Maybe we should just throw him in the oven now. 😂. Seriously he's not a baby and handled the discomfort. He only winched once. Practice makes perfect. Need a bow to put on his dressing next time.

Unless there is a bad bleed, it should not be stuffed. Please lightly fluff into the wound. This will allow the wound to close. Keep up the great work

@@NurseAlyssa39 I wasn't there but in the hospital's defence it was bleeding when they put in the first packing after the abscess was cut out and when it was changed the first time. Still some bleeding but it is minimal. Tomorrow it will get "fluffed", not stuffed. Maybe my friend will take pictures while I work on him. That will be a treat. It's ugly. My mother had papery skin in her old age that and got many angular tears that took forever to heal. She many times got cellulitis. I took her to a wound care center 3 times a week each time it happened and watched. They carefully removed the "non-stick gauze-, debrided it and applied Silvasorb ointment to it. One time they put a silver infused patch into a wound but it was so uncomfortable we had to go back and have it redone in an hour or two with the ointment. She has moved on to heaven so no longer has those issues. Thanks for mentioning the iodine/silver interaction.

@@NurseAlyssa39 just a follow up. The wound I have been tending to is slowly healing from the bottom and sides. In the beginning it was a little juicy but almost no blood or goo anymore. It was looked at by a professional and they said, "Whoever has been taking care of it has been doing a good job. Thankyou for your video and helpful comments. If I could figure out how to post the pictures I would. I'm only using a tiny piece of packing for the iodine. Soon I won't be able to get it in. I have putting a antibiotic cream on the out side skin to try and stop.bacteria from the skin from working it's way into the wound. Then cover it with guaze

@@NurseAlyssa39 i had a surgery done on my arm on monday. Doctor placed the iodoform packing on the wound, i have been keeping the wound covered. Doctor mentioned that on the fifth day the iodoform packing was suppose to come out of wound by itself. But that has not happened yet. The fifth day is today. Do just let it the packing come out on itself or do i try to pull it out?
@NurseAlyssa39
@NurseAlyssa39 Жыл бұрын
Packing the very just comes out on its own so I am not sure what the Dr was saying by this. The packing will need to be pulled out. If it is stuck or pulling at all saturate with sterile water or saline. You will also need the opening repacked. As a wound will not close without packing if deeper then 5 mm
