The Tony Iommian Scale!!!
Trying to teach complex ideas at breakneck speed.
I put the camera on and just went for it.
Topics covered:
Oliver Messiaen’s 3rd Mode.
Coltrane’s Augmented Triangle.
Full Circle of Fourths and Fifths.
The Augment Triangle and Diminshed Diamomd
12 Sharps and Flat’s make an alphabet of 25 letters.
The Tony Iommian Scale…not just of Metal, or for
Metal Guitar Heads.
References: Pat Martino, Allan Holdsworth.
Shown in a rush because no one has the time these
days.
If anyone shows any interest (no one give a shit), then
I’ll slow down and expand upon these idea’s.
Cheers!

This is one of those things that is nearly impossible to explain. It is like alchemy. No one can play quite like Tony .

The idea is not so much to play like Tony but to give a fresh perspective so others can create something new in a similar vein as Tony!!!

The diminished chord is not built on the tonic of its own key- it occurs diatonically as the vii chord of a (major) parent key. Of course, this a half-diminshed seventh chord and lacks the bb7.

This is based on Messiaen's 3rd mode. which is founded on 3 point harmony, or what John Coltrane used as the template for "Giant Steps"; which is "The Augmented Triangle". What scales fit into Three Point Harmony? A: The Harmonic Major and its mirror "The Harmonic Minor". Enjoy your day...be well!!!

He also mixes a lot. Aeolian and blues scale. For instance the riff for Electric Funeral is Aeolian plus blues scale with the 5b added. At least that's how I look at it, do it all the time myself. Blues and harmonic minor mixes well too.

Both Major and minor Blues scale come from The Ionian b5 scale. Both The Harmonic Major and Harmonic Minor have The Diminished scale on the seventh degree. If one lowers (flattens) any note in a diminished chord (1-b3-b5-bb7) it produces a dominant chord. So, four individual dominant chords. 1-3-5-b7!!! Perhaps check out my old video series called "The Crossroads". In the video I show many of the scales mentioned above. Thanks for your comments...enjoy your day!!!

The Iommi scale seems to be: {E F G G# A# B C# D E}. It's a Tritone scale based on the Augmented Triad {E G# C}. The Hendrix chord {E7#9} [or as I prefer to call it {Em7+3}] works with the scale as it is both Major and minor, and Diminished chords {D G# B F}.

its all a description. cook it up and eat it. The guy that dissects something and can show you the theory did 10 times the work of the guy who wrote it. People who use theory to drive their playing are running the risk of being good while sounding bad. Too much in the other direction sounds bad while sounding bad, which might be better. The only reason we play things over repetitively is to show it wasn't an accident, which calms them down. Practice is only cementing patterns in our subconscious. The genius is the guy who has an alert subconscious musical mind while being actually awake. The brain does tons of stuff in parallel, wake it up. This is why people do drugs to help them play, wake it up. You want to play better, wake it up. see how that works.
@onesdrones3000
@onesdrones3000 Ай бұрын
I so, so agree with you. I always played from my subconscious as a youth. However, the world told me that either I was wrong, or to explain my reasonings. I taught my self the musical system in order to be able to stand and explain myself.

Sounds like standard "Phrygian" scale. The Church Scales. Phrygian is a minor mode, good for Flamenco and for HeavyMetall. There is also a Major Phrygian scale, with a major 3rd, also good for Flamenco and HeavyMetall. 🚀🏴‍☠️🎸

What is 3 point harmony? I typed in 3 point harmony in google and nothing comes up, there is 3 part harmony. Iommian Scale formula is 1-2b-b3-b4-b5-6bb-7bbb? What are you talking about double flat 6 and triple flat 7
@lanceraustin

His "double flat 7" is enharmonic to the Dorian minor's major 6th- which is what that note would be called

@lanceraustin Ай бұрын
@@waynegram8907 Oh, I see what you're saying. I didn't make it through the whole thing, just caught the double-flat 7 and called bs. But seeing your sequence, yes you are correct- a 7th of some kind is needed. Does the Tuber say where Tony ever used such a scale? Bc I call bs on that, too- during his meaningful career (1970-82), it was usually Pentatonic (flat-5 optional), Aeolian, and sometimes Ionian.

@@lanceraustin The Black Sabbath 2nd and 3rd album certain solos has a jazzy scalar lines. I think the jazzy scalar lines he might have adding the 2b or b6 with the 6. I know carlos santana often will play the minor scale playing 7b and also the 7th
@lanceraustin
@lanceraustin Ай бұрын
@@waynegram8907 Great point about those scale tones. But everything you mentioned can be explained with the basic Greek modes. What CAN'T be explained is the double-flat 7. If Tony's playing both a major and minor 6th in the same solo, this can be explained as major-minor mode mixture, and both notes will be recognized as 6ths. There's just no room in the universe for this double-flat 7 lol. I suppose it's all semantics though.
