Homework Question Answer: α = 1 * 10⁻⁸ Solution: C6H5ONa = C6H5O⁻ + H3O⁺ 0.05 - 0.05α 0.05α 0.05α Ka= [C6H5O⁻] [H3O⁺] / [C6H5OH] = 1.0 X 10⁻¹⁰ 10⁻¹⁰ = ( 0.05α ) ( 0.01 + 0.05α ) / ( 0.05 - α ) 0.01 + 0.05α ≈ 0.01 & 0.05 - α ≈ 0.05 10⁻¹⁰ = ( 0.05α ) ( 0.01 ) / ( 0.05 ) 10⁻¹⁰ = ( α ) ( 0.01 ) α = 10⁻⁸ Thus the value of alpha as 1x10⁻⁸

K OF PHENOL= 1.0 X 10^-10 C6H50H + H2O = C6H50^- + H30^+ 0.05-X X X Ka=[C6H5O^-][H3O^+]/[C6H5OH] 1X10^-10=X^2/0.05-X (HERE, WE CAN NEGLECT X) FROM SOLVING THE ABOVE EQUATION, WE WILL GET 2.2x10^6 [C6H5O^-]=[H3O^+]=2.2x10^6 NOW, WE HAVE: C6H5ONa = C6H5O^- + Na^+ 0.01 0.01 C6H5ONa + H2O = C6H5O^- + H3O+ 0.05-0.05∝ 0.05∝ 0.05∝ AS ALPHA IS SMALL, WE CAN NEGLECT IT [C6H5OOH]=0.05 [C6H5O^-]=0.01 [H3O+]=0.05∝ Ka= [C6H5O^-][H3O^+]/[C6H5OH] = 0.01x0.05∝/0.05 1x10^-10=0.01x0.05∝/0.05 calculating this, we get value of alpha as 1x10^-8!

phenol is a very weak acid and that's why it gives high ph (low H+ concentration)..but still it loses H+, even though in a very low amount..so it is acidic and btw acidity is a relative term
