Ionising radiation such as alpha, beta and gamma radiation, collides or interacts with atoms and molecules in gases, liquids and solids to remove electrons, creating ions. This phenomenon is exploited to detect and measure the radioactivity in a Geiger Muller tube.
This short video explains the process of ionisation and how that is used in a GM tube.
