Hailing from Kilconnell in East Galway, fiddle player Paddy Fahey is the composer of the first tune on the opening track. Born in 1926, Paddy has never made a commercial recording, but his tunes have often been recorded by many fine musicians over the years. He is well known for the fact that he never gave any of his compositions names which can lead to confusion if you're not careful! In 2001 Fahey was named Composer of The Year by Irish Language TV station TG4 at their annual award ceremony "Gradam Ceoil TG4". Nick learned this particular Fahey tune from the playing of button accordionist Annette Owens.
Ríl Eanach Mhic Coilín, also known as The Annamaculeen Reel can be found in Breathnach's Ceol Rince Na hÉireann Vol 2 (#194). It was collected from flute player William Higgins, Mohill, County Leitrim in 1966. Nick learned it at a session in Longford from two wonderful local musicians Noel Sweeney and Jim McLoughlin. When he played it for Siobhán she was instantly reminded of The Ashplant, Ceol Rince Na hÉireann Vol 1 (#116), and on further investigation, she discovered that an alternative name for Ríl Eanach Mhic Coilín is The Tyrone Ashplant, and thus the duel between these two reels came about.
The final reel of this set was composed by another fiddle player, Connie O’Connell from Cill na Martra, Co. Cork. Being at the heart of traditional music studies in University College Cork for nearly forty years, the university was delighted, with the generous support of the Arts Council of Ireland (Traditional Arts), to host a project which collected over sixty of Connie's compositions. It was in this collection that we found Curlews In The Bog.
