Just so people are aware Apple Intelligence is only available on the 15 Pro/Pro Max or above, the non pro 15s and anything below won’t get it

For Genmoji, I've noticed it basically only combines existing emoji icons to create the new one. There are some caveats to that, but it's mainly just "stacked" and "merged" existing emoji.

For everyone else making the same mistake as me -- you don't press and hold the camera button while in the camera application - that just starts taking video. Press and hold the camera button while you're at the application launcher, with all your app icons on the screen. That launches into "visual intelligence" mode. This is entirely obvious after the fact, but unclear beforehand. You also should make sure you have Apple Intelligence enabled in settings.
