The only reason why Brian is still the OC is because of his daddy. It's ridiculous because he has been a complete failure. Maybe he should have spent more time in the Saban Center for Coaching Rehabilitation.

Yes, no question. Just based off of long term trend of performance vs his peers, esp 2022. There’s no reason to keep him. Anyone else with that kind of performance relative to their peers would have gotten fired without a doubt.

Why is Ferentz untouchable? His record is 186-115. He has won 61% of his games at Iowa and this makes him a legend? How many programs around the country would fire a coach that wins 61% of games? Wisconsin just got rid of a coach that won more. Iowa fans deserve better. Iowa boys Bob Stoops or Bret Bielema could've had this job years ago.

Iowa had Bobby Stoops in 1999, but former.disaster AD Bob Bowlsby, who later failed up to Big12 commissioner and got Tejas and Okie taken right out from under him, wanted to take more interviews and Stoops understandably upset accepted the Okie job.

Thank you for venting on this Joel. Yeah this is like a 6th grader amended this contract like it makes zero applicable sense in game situations. Iowa fans are beyond frustrated. Is there one person outside of Barta and the Ferentz family that feels this is a solid response to the worst offense in football for multiple seasons?? They have to change this it makes no sense.

I think Kirk would prefer to have a different OC. But he is afraid that if Brian is let go without having more success first, he'll never get another good job in football, and he can't stand to do that to his own son. "Never hire someone you can't fire."

This is what happens when you keep a coach for too long. KF could have been fired a couple times, not at Iowa obviously, but then he'd pull a good season out his rear and get another contract extension. And the longer he stays the more power he gained. Just like JoePa and others.

This is a complete joke. The "25 point" scoring average includes points scored by the defense and special teams units. It's a clear path to him actually ending up with an 8% raise. If he meets the two easily attainable goals, he would receive a new two-year rolling contract AND get a $112,500 one-time bonus bringing his 2023 compensation to $972,500. Disgraceful move by Barta. He's basically insulting the intelligence of every loyal UI fan.

Great commentary, Joel. But unless all the portal additions get hurt, Iowa should be able to average around 30 without having to change situational philosophy. The personnel perfect storm of last fall can't be overemphasized. Historically bad QB and OL, top receivers out (and no Charlie Jones), you name it. Barring injury disaster, the '23 offense will at least be back to the '18-20 level. Not a pinball machine, but able to score points.

You have to realize that most of the Hawkeye fan base don't just like Kirk Ferentz, they worship him. Yeah, I know it's gross but it's true. What Kirk Ferentz did with this new contract for his son was, in essence, say, "F you" to the hawkeye fans. He can do this because the current AD reports to him, he has ZERO accountability to anyone, he's made millions for decades now. When a guy makes a lot of money and has no accountability his view of reality shifts to ridiculous. He's been there now for probably about 20 years now. Sad, but true and the hawkeye fans will put up with it as long as he wins 7-8 games a year. Again, I know it's sick and disgusting but that's the reality.

It's an absolute cluster F@#$. The only way I can wrap my head around the contract is that they want BF take a step forward..and I would love that..with those parameters in the contract that would have been good for 85th offense last season. 85TH. If Iowa scored 25 pts a game we would have been 11-1. Contract makes sense 3 years ago. Here we are at year 6 of BF and we are the worst offense pair with the best defense and special teams. Imagine what Iowa could do with a top 60 offense. Blows my freaking mind. And it doesn't have to be 25 offensive pts. Iowa D could score 100% of that and will still count towards Brian's contract.

Iowa is shooting themselves in the foot because they want to make something work that clearly doesn't. When Iowa's recruits see videos like this do you think they want to stay there? No not at all. It puts too much pressure on the QB and other play makers to keep an OC job intake who doesn't even deserve to be in that position anymore.

Feel sorry for the early season “our sisters of mercy” teams. Iowa is going to need to run the score up in an unsportsmanlike manner, in order to give space for the average to be brought down during the more difficult Big Ten season.

The last time I checked Nepotism was illegal in the state of Iowa. The only thing saving the Ferentz Crime Family from going to prison is the fact that the Iowa football program is financially self sufficient and it funds their entire athletic department. If tax payer money actually went to pay their salaries they would face justice for their impropriety.

Joel, you missed a couple of the most critical points. First, won't this contract term put offensive and defensive players at the unnecessary risk of injury in :Push" situations? Secondly, the contract term also enables the players to possibly tank the points just to get rid of Brian. You're absolutely right that they need to either move on or reset the terms of the contract. This is insanity.
