Rooftop Garden Will Teach Employment Skills To At-Risk Youth

Construction is underway! Youth & Shelter Services (YSS) is preparing a ribbon cutting to open a first-of-its-kind employment skills program for at-risk youth in the Des Moines, IA, metro. YSS's rooftop garden will help spur a program that will see youth become urban farmers, tending to hydroponically (growing plants with a water-based nutrient solution) grown lettuce.
They'll then work with Hy-Vee to sell the produce throughout the city. Along the way, they'll learn about money management, the psychology behind it, and other key business skills.
