2:05 - when you try so hard to dominate an old man with aggression then get smacked on the nose for it. Adding tension clearly made it more possible for Ip Chun to sense the strikes and openings, amazing exhibition of composure by the old master.

Great video! I learned much from that. It is amazing that Master Ip Chun retained this much sensitivity, reflex, footwork etc at age of 70+. This is a great example of how Wing Chun helps you to understand your body through very simple exercises.

Darknives, thank you for explaining. I find it funny to hear people comment and say "there was no kicking" "there was no takedowns" and junk like that. People, like he said, it's a drill called Chi Sau. It is NOT sparring. It's ultimately not even competition. It's all about helping each other learn sensitivity. This is a beautiful art and I have loved learning it. Please be respectful.

I'm not a "hater" but, with all due respect, nobody's "fighting" in this video, I don't think anyone in history has ever "fought" like this. As my Wing Chun teacher told me to begin with, chi sao is not fighting, it's an exercise to develop attributes that can be helpful in fighting.
@solus161

the caveman the exercise is to develop the sense through one’s arms in CQB, to control the situation, not for offense. Think that this system is limited to this exercise is total ignorance. A open minded disciple could adapt Wingchun to various styles, if he get the very core, the basic concepts.

@@solus161 so funny why would you put yourself in the situation like this with this old man playing arm tricks if you could just jab him, leg kick elbows and knees.
@solus161
@solus161 4 жыл бұрын
@@rosenamajunas1159 this is just an exercise, a contest where people compete in defined skills. But it requires fine motor nerves and good footwork to not getting overwhelmed, meaning it's easier to avoid/negate/block jab, kick, elbow etc. What looks like to you (two men swinging their arms) is one stress testing other opening for strike. But if your opponent is way bigger than you, that's another story. In my country, wingchun, and all other varieties are taught to police forces and their wingchun could be different. Masters like Ipchun are like textbook, and instructors learning from them could develop their own varieties.

Chi Sau is a training game. The game part is trying to get your opponent to make a mistake and thus create an opening. The training part is in developing the sensitivity in (not just) the arms and wrists. As this develops with practice, the opponents intentions can be felt early as well as reactions speed up now that the arm no longer has to wait for the eye to relay signals to the brain. No hits are counted and no score is kept as the practitioners are really trying to help each other.

The greatest achievement is selflessness. The greatest worth is self-mastery. The greatest quality is seeking to serve others. The greatest precept is continual awareness. The greatest medicine is the emptiness of everything. The greatest action is not conforming with the worlds ways. The greatest magic is transmuting the passions. Believe me, they would have shown him much less respect if they had gone easy on him. Yip Chun wanted the world to see how far his western students have come since the 70's. It is Wing Chun philosophy to train in the most realistic manner possible without anyone getting harmed. The fact that some of these guys are really going for it only further underlines Yip Chun's skill.

Anyone who talks with disrespect about a great master like Ip Chun (or any other master who has trained upon years and years), using ignorant comments like "I would take control of his wrist" etc, only shows that they have not achieved the true spirit of martial arts, which is first and foremost respect to people who have devoted their lives to martial arts.

What this training adds to the Kung Fu is an increased ability to counter and deflect and a much more instinctive way of applying techniques. The actual striking is left out for obvious reasons. It does seem counter intuitive in the very beginning, but it very quickly animates the "static" techniques learnt in the forms.

This is really a great video. Two reasons. 1. Sifu Ipchun having the courage and energy to still face unknown wing chun practitioners publicly in free chi sao. 2. How much disrespect and ego outsiders can include in their chisao just to show how much better they are than a 75 year old man.

What many people unfamiliar with Wing Chun often assume to be different techniques are often the same techniques but being applied in a different context. For example a front thrusting kick and a side thrusting kick are the same kick. It is the opponent that has changed position, thus the concept and application change but the technique stays the same.

I have been lucky enough to witness lots of great chi sau, but the opening of this film where Ip Chun chi saus with Sifu Martin Brierley shows more usage of Wing Chun's energies and minute angles in such a short space of time, it is a mind blowing example of high level Kung Fu. It's apparent these two have practiced together for many years. What do you guys think??

Wing Chun theory states that all kicking has an inherent weakness in that one leg must be removed from the ground which considerably diminishes the effectiveness of the stance (this is a fact). However, the longer range and increased power of the legs when compared with the arms (hands) means that no complete martial art can ignore kicking.

Wing Chun adapts itself to a practitioners size and strength. Ip Chun has a very technical, precise and minute style as he is relatively small of stature. Ip Ching who is considerably taller than his brother has a more fluid, power orientated style. Wing Chun is about adapting to the body you have and I think both men have done this beautifully.

@erbake In Wing Chun, there is only low kicking.... thigh, knee, and the point between knee and feet... Wing Chun doesnt involve of throwing but it has many ways to prevent from getting thrown... Wing Chun is a kung fu that involves attacking and defending at the same time.... Everything is about timing, speed and accuracy... and of course reaction time...

Why argue? just see love, see truth, and embrace all things as beautiful. Its not about who's or what's the greatest, we are all equal its not about violence, its a spiritual path, discipline self control. Spirituality and the mind will always over weigh the physical being the physical being ends the mind however does not. Bruce lee had a great mind, ip chun also.

I believe Ip Man had to use his Ving Tsun to protect himself and was very good at the art of Ving Tsun, and his ego was huge. He was knocked down a few rungs from his ego ladder when an old man wanted to spar with him. Ip Man mocked him and reluctantly agreed to meet to test his skill out - Ip Man was his plaything and tossed around. Thereafter he was more modest. Wong Shun Leung learned from Ip Man, tested his skills successfully over 100 times. Ip Chun nor Ip Ching ever did.

Internal arts don't guarantee longevity, but they do require the practitioner to be relaxed. That's probably more to do with their longevity more than the specifics of the style, stress is well known to affect health after all. Any exercise is good exercise, though, and if you're eating healthily as well as being positive and unstressed, you're likely to live a long time :)
