iPad Case Hack - Make A Portable Watercolour Palette

We all like to recycle stuff, right? Well here I show you a simple hack that turns an old tablet or ipad case into a portable watercolour palette. When combined with a small watercolour pad or block, you have all you need for outdoor colour studies or urban sketching.

Love the idea. I went a different way and used it to hold a paper block where I can paint and have my existing palette on the cover flap. I would also suggest that a piece of white vinyl contact paper replace the tile if weight is an issue. Again brilliant idea.

Great idea! I would put something thin and hard on the other side to tape my paper to while I paint.

Instead of hot glue I would use an blue tack for the half pans.Then you can change out the pans..

Could stick a metal ring to hold with finger or wrist band at the back to hold this palette by hand..just adding to this excellent idea

I actually put watercolor sheets where you put the tile so that they could be enclosed inside and I used an extra half pan as a mixing tray as I usually mix on paper anyway

Hey Lefty Loops Art - thanks. I have always found ceramic to be the best surface to mix watercolour on. All other surfaces tend to bead the water and you can't mix properly. Great that you're thinking of 'Hacks' to my 'Hack' - Happy Painting...!

Hi Lefty Loops Art - water tends to bead up on plastic surfaces making it difficult to mix. I find the overall weight of this palette quite light. 😊

So if this is stored in a backpack it will leak right? I have all my paint stuff in a backpack in my boot so it’s ready to go so need options that won’t leak when not flat…☺️

The portability of this palette is its main feature. When I finish painting, the pigment on the palette is usually dry and the pans won’t leak and spill because they would have dried as well. Deeper wells on commercial palettes might contain more water after you finish painting-so they would leak. Give it a try 😊

What do we need sponge for ? Someone please educate me

Hi Zeen - the sponge is simply there to clean or wipe down your brush in between colour applications. Most watercolourists use a towel or rag for this - a sponge can be flipped over and cleaned or replaced at any time. Keeps it all together in one place.

Love this idea, but my thought was having the pans and tile attached by Velcro strips or dots would allow you to remove them for clean up as well. I haven't yet made my own, but I do have a spare e-book case and I have some Velcro dots from another craft project, so I will be using them to make mine easier to clean when done.
