I have this device. I’ve used this device. I have one of the SanDisk SSD’s just like the one you have. I realize that this is a down and dirty quick video about if it works but I would like to just offer some experiences I had with these items. I wasted tremendous amounts of time, energy, and yes patience trying to archive data from several devices, iPads and iPhones which were FULL of photos and videos of children and grandchildren from the last few years. After some research I found this Apple device and purchased it along with a couple of storage products. As mentioned before the SanDisk SSD and a SanDisk USB thumb drive. Both of these storage devices had only out of the box files on them. As in this video I connected the Lightning connector of the device to the iPad or iPhone then the charging connector to the larger of Apple’s charging blocks (not the little square one that comes with the phones, but the larger one that comes with the iPads). At this point I should be ready to DUPLICATE the procedures on this video. I was able to do these things with some limited success. Here is what I found. After proving what was done on this video to be able to be performed with “A” file (photo, video) or two I decided the device and procedures I was using worked and continued on with this belief until EVIL reared its ugly head. I CREATED thru the Files program a folder on the storage device and transferred 10 files into the “SUB” folder I created - - still no problems. Giddy at the fact that this was so streamlined and effortless and I would soon be able to have backups of all my precious files that eat up all of my iPhone, iPad, and YES even my MacPro that I have been putting off doing for way too long I started to move more and more files in this manner. By this I mean I went from moving files 10 at a time to 20 the 50 then 100. Everything seemed “to good to be true” as far as getting done quickly and easily. It just took longer times to transfer depending on the amount of files and size of files being transferred, for instance if a group of files contained quite a few longer videos then it took longer. Nothing wrong or unexpected with this fact just that once I got to some SERIOUS amounts of data to be transferred the iPhone or iPad would sleep and this usually ended up in disaster see below. THEN disaster strikes. For reasons I still do not understand I got an error message (sorry forgot what it was) and was forced to disconnect everything and begin again. Keep in mind that I had “ALREADY TRANSFERRED” I thought HUNDREDS of photos and videos. To my SHOCK however when everything died and was disconnected and then reconnected I went to the Files App and located my device again expecting to pick up my backing up activities where I had left off before the lock up of the process. To my HORROR NONE of the FOLDERS I created were to be found on the storage device. Fearing the worst I connected the storage device to my MacPro and tried to find the folders I created there. I found files with the names of the folders I had created BUT these files WERE NOT folders, had odd file extensions in the name, and contained ZERO BYTES of information. I got the hair brained idea of creating the folder structure on the storage device from the MacPro after deleting all of the garbage which I found there to see if there was any way the Files App just didn’t have the umph to do this function. I recreated folders for “My iPhone, my wife’s iPhone, my iPad, my wife’s iPad etc and started the process over again. On the plus side I have been able to back up most all of my files into these folders onto the thumb drive which is where I started the process and then later disconnect everything and plug the thumb drive into any of these devices and access all of my backed up photos and videos, however with the SanDisk SSD I’d had little to no luck doing what was done on the video as I always get an error message stating no support or not enough power to use it. 2 further notes 1) if the iPhone or iPad slept the current group of photos and videos would NOT finish and would have to be redone 2) Not sure if the raw out of the box storage devices need some type of FORMATTING to work seamlessly with iPhones and iPads My OPINION: If iPhones and iPads are doing something they SHOULD NOT SLEEP If devices NEED formatting they should say so AND finally IF I selected AAALLLLLLLL of my files to transfer and start that process I should be able to have it complete regardless of the amount of time it takes until it is completed

The lightning port and the USB-C port look alot alike. Just by looking, it seems like you would directly plug the USB-C cable from your drive in the "little hole" that seems the same as the cable. I know in the video you specify it's for the power source, and that it's a lighting connection, but that may still be confusing for a beginner. It would be more helpful if you specify that you actually need TWO adapters: the actual white adapter you are reviewing, and then one to go from USB-C to USB-3 (or as a rookie would describe: the regular USB we are used to seeing). I saw you do this and figured it out, but a beginner would not have caught on to that right away. Apologies, if someone else already called this out in a previous comment.

If you want to use mechanical drives (HDD) you’ll need to use “Powered USB hubs”. These are USB hubs that has their own power supply. :) Try to search for this in Amazon. The brand U-Green has one.

So, I did a lot of testing with my iPad Pro 10.5 first gen. Bought a SD card reader only on amazon. This works fine all the time. I also had a Belkin dual lightning adapter. The SD card ready works through this also. I can charge and use the SD card reader at the same time. I bought the Apple lightning to USB 3.0 adapter. It works fine with SSD and not HHD. My USB 2.0 flash drives work without having power running through it. I tried to use my USB flash drive 3.0 128gb in my car having the power connected to a cigarette lighter adapter and there wasn’t enough power. So just a heads up that to use SSD and/or USB 3.0 flash drives, you have to use enough power coming in. Not all power adapters supply enough amps to run it. (Probably need the 2.1amps and not just the 1 amp)... that would be a good test for you to do.

I also have an iPad Pro 10.5. What exactly do I need to purchase in order for me to transfer files from the USB thumb drive to my iPad Pro 10.5? Do I just need to purchase the following two items? 1) Apple Lightning to USB 3.0 adapter 2) power bank
@blueclearsky4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your video. What I have learned thus far is that your power source needs to be the power cube that came with the iPad (the bigger cube that you connect your lighting cable to) using an iPhone cube won't supply enough power. Oddly enough, some older usb flash drives will work without a power source. For me, it was a 4GB Transcend and a 8GB Lexar. My 32GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade requires power. I can only assume that this has something to do with the actual capacity of the usb flash drives. Im still trying to find a way to use a portable power bank/brick to make all of this work. Maybe you have some ideas? I have tried the two that I own and they do not supply enough power. Again, my guess here would be that the portable power bank/brick needs to have the same output as the iPad power cube.

How do you get power to the device
@zaverdragon15 жыл бұрын
Bro you gotta pay attention to your previous videos comments, we told you how to make this work with similar apple or non apple devices, basically use a powered USB hub between the USB storage device and the apple lighting adapater, this will allow for the power to distributed to the ports correctly, the iOS adapters dont provide power unless its for low power devices like up to 2.5 watts, which is 5 volts x .5 Amps. The reason it works with the newer ipad pros with USB C is because USB Cs standard forces it to be better in power delivery, even works with smaller portable spinning harddrives.

This question came to my mind as I read "USB-C" in the title, too! ;-) But this Apple adapter has no USB-C port, but an USB-A port. An adapter (USB-C female with USB-A male) will make the physical connection possible, but Apple will surely only allow their HDMI adapter! ;-)

I was gonna say try the Apple adapter. Apple had us covered for once. You can also use a powered usb splitter to use a keyboard and mouse, as well as connect midi devices, your camera or usb headphones as long as it’s powered. It’s a little bit extra but that’s why the iPad Pro has usb c the 7.5 Watt power out takes care of the lack of power from the device like in this video.

You have to have a powered adapter - say you have a USB to lightning adapter, you want the one that has a lightning port on it too - then you can plug a lightning cord to a wall adapter (or into a power bank) and then into the adapter. This will 'power' the adapter/ipad combo. If you hunt a bit on amazon, you can find USB to lightning that has 2 USB ports and a card slot - or HDMI to lightning but the MAIN thing is it has to have that lightning port ON the gizmo so you can power it. 2018 and up have that C port so isn't that just so easy... :(

Other KZbinrs were saying you need a powered usb hub to get drives to work with ios, but they never attached power to the Apple adapter like you did. Is this an either or situation? ie. You don't need the powered usb hub but you need to add power to the adapter to use a single usb external drive. OR You don't need to power the adapter if you use a powered usb hub with the ability for multiple usb external drives to be attached.
