You hear horror stories all time regarding a failed timing belt. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those stories are true if you don’t maintain the timing belt and timing belt drive components on late model Volvos. Timing belt kits normally consist of a timing belt, idler pulley, and tensioner. The timing belt races around these pulleys and gears keeping the valvetrain of your engine in check! The timing belt plays a critical role in your cooling system. Timing belts often drive the water pump for your Volvo’s engine. If any of these components fail, the damage can be catastrophic to your cylinder head and internal engine components.

The belts are not indestructible. It's just that the pulleys may fail first. And the original water pump is good for 200K miles - unless a previous owner has put a cheap chinese one. Use only Aisin for the water pump, Continental for the belt kit.

This is right on the absolute edge of my skills but I'm going to do it. The main reason isn't money but that I've seen and heard of too many dishonest and/or incompetent "professional" shops in my area.

Thanks, now I can change the belt. I do not have the cam and crank locking tools but you would have mentioned if they are needed. Vvt can be installed "as you wish". Let's start.

As it is a good idea to replace the idle pulley and tensioner when you replace the timing belt, for these, volvo recommends you check them for play or oil contamination, if they are ok that can be reused. A genuine belt kit including the pulleys is around £60 in the UK so its not that bad!

We only replace the water pump at the second timing belt on 2001-2009 Volvo. Unlike a Vw or Toyota.

And order the lock tool. One point out and your car will run like bad. Also. It take a week to the belt to really seat well.

Hello, I drive a 2005 Volvo XC70. I requested if my dealership would also replace the idler/tension rollers as routine (as well as the belt). Have over 90K miles. I was told, not part of the job, nor is it required. Keep in mind this is coming from Volvo. I requested he double check with one of his service techs to confirm if my request is valid. So, is this just the dealership hoping to ensure I blow my engine to ensure the possibility of a new sales in the future? Thanks for your input.

User One need to be change at 110000 miles. It will run 10 or 20 more but you will be gambling

Do you need to use a cam lock tool to do a T belt job? not adjusting the VVT hubs so why would I need the tool?

Question about lapping! on my valves, I got a 95 turbo, I'm doing a valve job and realized that the surface area is perfect to the valve seats to the sides of the valves, it looks perfect cut.. Do you recommend lapping the valve's here?

Hey iPd, question for u in the market for a 93-00 850 s/v70 or 03 to 07 v70 which body style is easiest to do a timing belt, also are the natural aspirated or turbo engine better. Overall for longevity

I'd say that an older model car (so in your case, the 850 s/v70 from 93-00) would be easier, since those cars generally have more room in the engine bay. However, take into account that components like AC and a turbo might make it more difficult, since those cram up the engine bay itself. For longevity, a naturally aspirated car will generally hold out longer due to less stress that's put onto certain components. More power from the same components means more stress is put on those components, making them wear out faster. This does however vary greatly on engine design, the way it was driven etc.

Absolutely. If theres a question of when it was done...do it with the pulleys and water pump.
