iPhone 13 Lens Flare Problems Strange Refraction Issues and White Orb

Apple's iPhone 13 still has the same problems with lens flares as the older iPhone 12, iPhone 11, last year's iPhone SE MK2 and many previous iPhone models. Although I'm on the iPhone 13 Mini these problems effect all versions of the iPhone 13 including the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The main problem is with the lens system on the iPhone 13 creating lens flares that are much worse than what should be reasonably expected for a camera system on a smartphone. There's also the issues of a white orb, or spot that appears with the flares but this white orb spot, White Hole Sun, can completely ruin an otherwise good shot. Then there's a very strange refraction issue which almost looks like an inverted image of the clouds in the sky. Because I bought the iPhone 13 Mini specifically for vlogging it's hard to see me keeping this, as it's going to be impossible to monitor the rear wide and ultra wide cameras when selfie vlogging and the only time I'm likely to notice these issues is when it's too late. For me it looks like Apple have not fixed the iPhone camera problems that have now been with us for what feels like an eternity. This now made all the much worse with the iPhone 13 cameras and lenses due to the massive Cinematic Hype about the iPhone 13 with the new cameras, Pro Res and Cinematic mode. Seriously, there's nothing Cinematic about these iPhone camera problems which now seem worse on the iPhone 13 lenses and cameras. And I’m usuing iPhone 14 and they still haven’t fixed the glare issues and no, not all phones have that issue. MI phones don’t have the glare no matter how much you point the camera at sun and bright lights. It’s so disappointing 😢

I have the same issue on my 13. Discovered it for the first time when shooting night time video. It’s very noticeable me to. Had no idea this was an issue with multiple years.

You're exactly right, it definitely does happen to other iPhones. My current XS Max has that issue. As for the white orb, some people equate that to ghosts 😃

So terrible by apple. How do they not fix this and think this is okay? The same issue happens on my iPhone 12 pro max. I paid good money for the camera system, but these reflections happen all the time, so bad. Come on apple!

This is ridiculous that Apple cannot fix lense flare issues, afterall it's a multi billion dollar company. Also, the glass back and screen is flimsy. Apple sucks.

its a sensor/processing issue, of overexposed areas, not a regular lens flare. I believe that the shape is a replication of the overexposed area, the lens/glass itself doesnt make these kind of complex shapes, they can only appear when the light is focused at the sensor plane. I have seen this happen to all kinds of very overexposed objects, the shape gets cloned/duplicated. .. and apple wont deal with it, they just change your camera if you complain, not fixing the problem

I have the same issue with my iphone 13. Thought it would be a hardware problem with the lenses. Got a new one and the exact same problem. Really noticeable with bright elements like the sun or light in dark places. The light source in the camera gets duplicated and turned around and follows your movement like some kind of lens flare effect. Thought apple would be the king's on the smartphone market. Really disappointed - never had such problems with Android devices.

The shape of the flare is exactly the same as the clouds surrounding the sun. The dot is the sun.

Yes, the dot looks like internal refraction of the sun but the streaky thing sometimes looks like the clouds but then doesn’t, very odd. Cheers, Dave.

Very few channels will talk about this. It still a problem even on the new iPhone 16. Also, what about a lens hood like normal cameras use to reduce sun flare. I'm beginning to really think the whole phone camera vs real camera is bs. Yes cell phones can produce a nice image in controlled environments but flare, ghosting, and these weird artifacts + an image that jumps around - lack of stabilization and poor low light performance means the camera isn't dead. Also, where are all the channels using cell phone gimbals? It seems the only time is for a gimbal review. Why do most channels use a 'real' camera in the studio instead of a phone? And the myth goes on with the latest iPhone 16 - The Weeknd filmed a music video with it but you shoot a video in your backyard and it doesn't look very good and always crazy digital over sharpened.

Hi. Yes, this is an issue that many KZbinr's simply fail to address. I've just got the 16 Pro Max and will be doing some tests soon. If I find the same flare issues I will definitely do a video about it. I agree, for the best part, the phone camera vs "real" camera thing is a load of BS. Yes, phones are super convenient and while it is true that the best camera is the one you have on you. For serious photography or videography, you definitely don't use a phone. I'm very happy with the S24 Ultra but that's just for convenience. However, if you do setup a good phone camera properly, manual exposure etc. You will get something good for everyday things. I will do a comparison between the 16 Pro Max and the Panasonic S5 MK2 soon. Cheers, Dave.

Just got an iPhone 13 mini and same 12 mini was fine. Ordered collection of device by Amazon, they screwed up. Now using an Alcatel 1 2021 as like small phones, cheap as chips and quite honestly no problems with its very cheap camera. It's also a fast device for specs, 1 tenth of price and am using to reply, hardly any difference in day to day use as 13 mini!

Yeah, that thing you're calling a "smudge" is exactly what you say around 5:00, the reverse image of the brightest spot of light at the tree line, and it matches up perfectly with that. No mystery, just have to know how your basics about light refracting.

That last flare is a complete reflection of the sun and some surrounding clouds. It is reflecting in the protecting cover of the lenses. Awfull

This is from the camera protector glass. You can replicate this with a fancy mirrorless camera too. If you put a filter on a lens, you can see that when u directly pointing at the light. If you want it to go away, you can actually break the glass that protect the camera. Mirrorless lenses use high quality glasses, so it is more durable. Smartphone camera lenses are more likely to be maded with some plastic ones. You will see scratches if u dont have ur protection
