Nice comparison! One thing I was curious about was the color tone of the display (12 vs 13). In the portion of your video where you were comparing the base storage…and had the phones side-by-side, it looked like the 13 has a “ cooler” display (ie the 12 looked like a warmer tone). I was not a fan of the warmer tones in general across the 12 line last year. So, if things have “cooled” a bit for the 13…great!

Is that a mode you think you would use a lot? I found it’s results to be pretty impressive (especially for a small phone) when the subject and background isn’t too complicated. You can see how it struggled with hair and other smaller details in some of my examples.

When looking at the side by sides, I notice the biggest difference in high contrast or tricky lighting as well as low light of course. Likewise, I actually prefer that HDR look of the 13 mini video. Lots of color info to play with. I’ll be sharing a more detailed video camera comparison soon.

i just bought a 12mini refurb from apple. really wanted the 13mini but couldn't spend the $200 more. i am a photographer who recently lost use of 1 hand so my pro camera bodies / lenses are somewhat useless now. i thought i would see an improvement in the 13 but i actually like the colors better and ability to to not crush the highlights of the 12 mini. i don't do paid jobs anymore but wanted something for family and such. ( i really wanted the 14 pro but that was almost $600 more than the 12 mini ) your transition between images comparing the 2 was way too fast. hold them for at least 5 seconds to hit pause and really look. also wished you had done some low light shots. thanks for the comparison.

How much difference did you pay for the upgrade? Is it really that much worth it? Seems like apart from that little but extra battery the rest doesn’t in practice seem to be worth it. Seems more like very slight technical differences that one would never really notice. Next year there should be much more significant improvements and that time the pro versions will really make things look significantly better in real life situations.

Great shots... A quick word on the battery life / drain in your daily usage as compared to the 12 mini would be most useful practically.. How do you rate the battery life in comparison with the 12 mini?

So far, without any definitive testing, it does seem that the 13 mini is not draining battery as fast. With the outdoor camera comparison for example, while not a perfect apples to apples, the 13 mini drained less battery even though I shot more photos and videos on it. I can’t gauge how much better it is yet, but i am noticing it’s benefits so far.

@Tessoro Desoto The justification is in the battery longevity too. Larger batteries die slower. My X that I bought in 2017 is on 79%. My 12 mini is already on 88% and it's less than a year. A larger battery on 13 means you can probably keep the phone a year or two longer.

@@visheshb Yeah I also think it's not worth the extra money, 200 more for 15% more battery life and slightly better processor and camera. Also seems to me that the vertically deeper notch is worse than the wider but slimmer one on the 12. As for the battery, on a regular day I'll have like 2 hours screen on time, so anything with more than 6 sot is more than enough, plus it's a small battery so charging it shouldn't take long. For the same price you can either get a 12 mini or a 11, and when comparing those two, the 12 mini is a clear winner. The 13 mini seems more like a 12 mini s.

Just upgraded from the XS to a Product Red 13 Mini. I knew I was swapping my XS this year, as it's about to lose the latest iOS, but its battery health (or lack of it) hastened the upgrade. Using a bumper and MagSafe grip - not a fan of full cases - and have already got myself quite a few MagSafe accessories. I read that the mous case for the 12 mini doesn’t fit with the 13 mini. Mous sent me a 13 mini case for free when I emailed them to arrange to send my 12 mini case back for an exchange after I sent back my 12 mini. I’m getting a replacement 12 mini, since I got to keep the 12 mini case as well. If I still get problems with the 12 mini I’ll send it back and get a 13 mini instead so I will test the 13 mini mous case on my 12 mini when that arrives tomorrow.

I have a question on the 13 mini's frontal camera -- i got 13 mini and just realized the straight line blur effect that comes from light source is significantly noticable under room lights when I'm on the front camera. Do you see the same thing on your 13 mini as well? My iphone x's frontal camera wasn't this bad, so I'm actually thinking this might be a defect that my new 13 mini has.. any comments will be helpful! Thanks!

Hey Paul. Thanks for the comparison. I am a 12 Mini user since day of its launch. I click alot of pictures outdoors during day as well as night. How much of an improvement is the 13 mini for still photography. I do a lot of still photography. From animals, to parks, trees ( nature ) To food - with good lighting and stuff. The reason I am not going for the 13 Pro is only it’s size. So again - Is the 13 Mini worth an upgrade from the 12 mini just for photography and a bit of videography?

So... if you absolutely must have the best, then yes, the 13 mini does offer some decent improvements. I think it is stronger in dynamic range, handling harsh lighting as well as in low-light. I think without much editing, the images look more pleasing and rich. Likewise, autofocus speed and reliability seem on-par. With editing, both can look similar, but the 13 mini still has those improvements in the conditions I mentioned. While I would not exclusively upgrade solely for camera improvements, they are decent. Let me know if that helped and if you have any other questions!

But there is still a lot of compromises for 700 800$ you phones like x70 pro plus who have 4 high quality cameras with ziess optics & gimbals. In 2021 even 500$ phones have 120hz display & triple camera setups. & that notch it's so 1st gen. The whole world has moved to under display fingerprint sensors also 4 gb ram is never enough when phones half its price come with 8 to 12 gb ram. The mini feels like a phone from 4 years ago. It should atleast have 6gb ram 3 cameras a fingerprints sensor & a 90 or 120hz panel those are basic things in 2021

I have had tested those kind of phones with those “better” specs. For whatever reason, iPhones and iOS, just feels more polished, efficient and snappy. Apple’s bionic chips make a huge difference. RAM and raw specs do not tell the full story. And every phone that I’ve tested that had additional cameras was always gimmicky and never looked good in anything past great lighting. A 120hz would be great as would an in screen finger print sensor, but that would just be icing on the cake for me. Let me know if you have any other questions or thoughts on them and I’ll try to help.

As far as video goes, that is HDR doing its magic and can easily be adjusted. For photos, the 12 mini has a tendency to actually be brighter. When compared to side by side, the 13 mini is cleaner and sharper. Especially when you zoom in, these differences are more apparent. If deciding between the two, I would say if the prices are close, the 13 mini, beyond just the camera upgrades, is the better choice.

TBH iPhone mini isn’t that good. I’m disappointed that the 13 mini power and volume buttons are in the same area as the 12 mini. The buttons are stiff causing me to accidentally take screen shots when I’m just trying to raise the volume. I also hate the battery life because it dies super quick. At least the charging is fast depending what charger you use. I love apple but what you said in the beginning of the video is kinda true. iPhones are a bit over priced

They look darker in photos. But as I share in my detailed comparison which I linked in my pinned comment; the 12 mini actually has a higher iso in most images and is therefore noisier and has less detail when you zoom in.

I think the 13 mini is more rich and handles tricky lighting much better. Its not a game changer, but it is noticeable to me. Would I upgrade just for that reason, not really, but I do appreciate it!

This was a helpful comparison. Found that the 13 series has a pale look with Caucasian skin tones - the 12 series does a better job there.
