Creatives in Nigeria and third world countries face this challenge of clients comparing shots from iphone to that of entry level camera. This is because most of those that are into videography or photography in Nigeria buy the used cameras from Europe and US. So , clients compare the delivery of our Productions shot on our old cameras with old kit lens with that of their new iphone series 11 upward. Lens are really costly over What keeps us going is our creativity and post-production skills that the icing on the cake. I'm still shooting with T3i (600d). I bought that based on my budget and based on the video you uploaded on canon 600d (T3i) several years ago. I know one day Africans and Nigerians and importantly me will have the fund to buy good lenses and better cameras . So that our works standout without much editing in post-production. There are very cheap primes too although they might not be built for videos. Depending on scenarios, they make a great difference, so worth a small investment. Not too expensive even compared to 600D.

I agree with you Ted, that there are lenses to buy out there, but the most affordable of them all is canon nifty-fifty preferably 50mm f1.8 STM. However on a crop sensor (APS-C) canon camera 50mm focal length gives output of 80mm. The focal length for video is meant for extreme close up and portrait for pictures. To get a wider shot/frame you will need to be so far from your subject that's even if the room provides the space. The other seemingly affordable option is yongnuo 35mm f2 which will given focal length of 56mm focal length. Mind you the lenses doesn't have Inbuilt image stabilization. So you can't do gun and run Which is typical for events and not still shoots . So if you use those lenses and move with it since most of the entry level camera doesn't have in body stabilization. Sigma lenses and other lenses are apparently above $200 dollars over here and considering the inflation in Nigeria market lenses with in body stabilization might be off the hook for beginners and enthusiast without other source of income. The major selling point of creatives in third world countries, Africa and Nigeria has much to with technical know how in post-production, light direction skills and creativity. All in all, I'm saying I will rather suggest the choice of either camera or iphone for gigs or personal use is dependent on the niche you want for yourself and the professionalism you want to achieve in the media space. Just as Parker Wallback and full time filmmakers always advice camera operators to maximize the use of their respective cameras and not wait till they have big cameras. You can get the best out of any gear. Your expertise in videography/cinematography or simply camera operation determines a lot. I still shoot with the type of camera t3i Parker shot with several years ago 🙈 and you will be surprised as to the quality of the production owing to light direction adjustments and fix on the footage in post-production. While I just like other beginners in Nigeria and Africa look forward to buying bigger cameras one day some day when funds permits we won't stop encouraging ourselves and urging beginners to opt for what's best for them. By the way, I would put the camera on a tripod or monopod whenever possible as image stabilization is often quite far from enough for videos.

ty for covering HDR PQ mode! No KZbinr seems to cover it which I think it should be covered because they often talk about straight out-of-camera image but then choose a basic picture profile mode for judgment. I personally prefer using LOG but when it's a quick video for immediate social media sharing, I use HDR PQ. Also, I don't know if the R10 has a vertical (portrait) video mode, but my R5 does and it makes it easy to share videos online for vertical orientation. Which brings up my point which is Canon released a brand new version of their smartphone app that's really good. It connects to the camera much faster than before with less finicky setup. and it lets you erase and manage the photos much easier than before while offering easy download capabilities to the phone so that you can share better with the apps that you use.

Another thing to remember - I bought a camera and kept it for about 8 years. My iPhone battery was useless after 5-6 years and struggled with 'upgrades' to the OS making it slow to operate. Also, removing and changing a memory cars is almost the dealbreaker for me.

I wonder how many more charging cycles the phone went through, though. Most people I´d guess probably charge their phone once a day on average, something even professionals likely won´t be doing year round with their dedicated cameras (and hobbyists probably only do when on vacation). That´s a lot of extra stress to endure

@@mekullag9787 I think the difference is strictly the bullcrap of smartphones not having easily interchangeable batteries, whereas the cameras do. So even if you're a pro using a battery daily, it's very cheap and easy to replace a worn out one. Well, that and not having to change out the entire kit every 2ish years when the phone dies (if you're Android, IDK about iPhone, but 5-6 years feels like a very long time to keep a phone still). Yes, the initial buy in is more for a camera, but then once you buy the body it's good for 8 years (or more) and the lenses usually can carry forward to new bodies for decades if you like. You only need to re-buy everything on a major mount change (like the mirrorless mounts that are now behind us) or if you change brands entirely.

Great video! I'd personally add an extra point to the R10 or basically to any proper camera for its feeling, when I use a DSLR or a mirrorless camera I enjoy its ergonomics and feel like a real photographer .. I feel more free to shoot at higher or lower angles with the tilting screen and no phone can ever give me a viewfinder. All these things may not matter to everyone but those who love and enjoy photography would really appreciate that feel of using a dedicated camera.

i mean to be honest, phones caught up very fast, especially considering tele range and "bokeh", at least when its done via somehow bigger sensor and a nice aperture, i dont talk about the AI fake bokeh/portrait modes But a S22 Ultra has for example interesting (super)tele range, its still pretty bad but you cant expect much more in this size, it wont really serve as a wildlife camera anyways thats why big, real 300mm+ lenses exist. I would just wish any manufacturer would get his ass up and finally make a smartphone with "only" 2 cameras... one front and one main camera, but the main camera/sensor only with interchangable lenses and any super short regular lens for everyday and basic smartphone use. Considering flip phones have a comeback you could even make some sort of highly compact camcorder held smartphone with this new type of 90° angles lens systems as the S22 Ultras Telezoom lens is built like at the cost of having just one phone sized screen or 2 screens on each side to make the hinge mechanism as for example in the mighty Nokia N93 once. I really miss the days when the industry was at least creative. I loved my Nokia N93, it was a thick, fragile phone but it also served not too bad as a cheap camcorder with 3x optical zoom and stabilizer built in! The biggest bummer was the video resolution, sensors image quality, video compression and the cheap zoom lens which wasnt even hyperfocal (if it meant anything for a better phone at all)

With 3rd party apps giving full control over the phone and the advent of multiple lenses there are very few things a "camera" does better than a phone (at the same price). If you compare a $4000 camera to a phone then yes there are major advantages.

The point of a camera is the different lenses and possibilities. This allows you to get more out of it. A smartphone might be better for everyday use. But when it comes to wildlife photos or portrait photos etc. then a camera is much better.

Great overview. I would’ve rated very similarly and I honestly think at a $ 1000 price point it’s a tough call. I DO think however that a used APS-C camera from a few years back can be a fantastic choice for a beginner. I started out on a Sony a6300 which may seem ancient, being launched in 2016. But its 4K video is still leaps and bounds better than what you get from a current smartphone. Of course, getting the right lens(es) and actually learning your gear is a must, and this is exactly what puts a lot of people off. ...which I think is too bad, but then again nobody can be expected to invest time in learning to use a camera if that’s just not their thing. All in all, I think the days of entry level consumer cameras are numbered. UNLESS manufacturers finally start integrating the kind of processing and computational features that people have in their smartphones. That would allow people to make a smooth transition from their auto-everything smartphone to a dedicated camera.

I would not call a camera, body only 1500$ (remember, date the bodies, marry the lenses!) as "entry level" especially considering the lenses are the expensive part then, for me the R7 is the best and most expensive camera i ever had after over 10 years of hobby photography. But i also only invested in lenses, on the bodies i always cheaped out 2nd hand which was at the time cost effective (and at best partially broken in things i didnt need to even cheap out more) But i guess you are talking from a production/paid job perspective, but i have to tell you: Barely anyone owning good cameras earn money with it, be lucky that you made it to this point at all! Majority of people also see a 1000$ camera as expensive as hell

How many times can we make this video? Are smartphones really good now? Sure. And they are super handy like Parker points out in the video because we are typically always carrying it with us. Does it replace a DSLR. Not really. We are all far better off by putting our "focus" on telling the story and worry less about the camera.

How many years have these manufacturing companies robbed customers by stuffing dark and small sensors into their cameras? To get a bright and pleasant picture, you had to fork out for a full-frame sensor and buy 3 lenses for it at a crazy price. This heist is finally over with iPhones. If you're not some kind of cinematographer, then there's no point in buying this crap anymore. The camera market will fall because ordinary buyers put the bolt on these stingers.

@@fulltimefilmmaker I'm not trying to be rude, but the influx of iPhone vs "name whatever device" videos have became the dead horse so many content creators continue to beat. I understand this might be the first one you have published of this phone vs a similar price range, but there are also several iPhone vs videos that have been posted to FTF KZbin. The concept feels old. Like I said, are smartphone cameras good? Yeah, for the average person it's all they need. The iPhone does some wacky things, especially with the way it processes photos if you aren't shooting with the pro in proraw. Just watched thru the video and like always you do a fair review and point out some of these things like cinematic mode for video, the weird skin tones, etc. That's something I appreciate greatly with all the content you produce, that you will tell it like it is and deliver an excellent perspective. Just burnt out on the video concept. I'm sure there are plenty of folks that this video will resonate with. I stand by what I said about focus less on the gear and more on telling the story. Don't let the tools you have limit you. Creativity is the greatest value that any creator has in their toolbox.

Are smartphones, which almost everyone has, good enough to tell a good story? Do we absolutely need to buy a dedicated camera? Thanks to these videos, the answer is no, you don't need a professional camera, especially if you're just a beginner. Smartphones are good enough for you to learn and practice photography and videography. So, yes, I think Parker should continue to make videos just like this. Beginners need videos like this. As for the Pros? They already own good cameras.

Camera phones are getting better and better, and will continue to do so. They’re great for everyday snaps. A great photo is a great photo, no matter what it was captured with. But, one of the areas where the iPhone falls short at vs a dslr / mirrorless camera with a decent lens is their portrait mode. Looks like a weird photoshop to me sometimes. But, I still like using my iPhone to capture photos, solely because it’s always with me, in my pocket.

@@prodj.mixapeofficial6431I fully agree with you. The biggest problems with mobile photography are color and micro-contrast. More than 10 years ago I had a 6MP Nikon D1X crop, released in 2001. And so far, the photos from the D1X are better than those from today's phones.

Yeah, a more fair comparison would be the kit version with the 18-150, its not a good lens by any means, but it would have crushed the iPhone in 90%+ where the 18-45 was just bad. I would have even said the comparison would have been more fair to a R7 18-150 kit, i paid about 1100€ (so anywhere around 1100-1200$!) for my R7 in vacation. I tried btw the Sigma 60-600 (the EF version) and i was not impressed at all. I thought its probably a nice upgrade from the 150-600C but it wasnt, the 60-150mm were absolutely not worth the price or weight so i stayed at the 150-600C im pretty happy with instead. For me it would have made sense as a basic 2 lens setup for most cases, my 17-55 2.8 and the 60-600 Sigma would have been everything i need in 95% of the cases, with the 150-600C i miss the 55-150mm (90-240mm in APS-C terms) in this 2 lens setup which sometimes annoyed me but i rarely use this range anyways and if, cropping or 4k crop mode on the 17-55 does its job as good.

Also, something to notice (at least on the DSLR version) is that the Bokeh isnt the best on the 150-600C already, its worse on the 60-600S, same aperture doesnt mean same performance in bokeh, sadly.

A good video and worth redoing with every new development of smartphones to keep it current. This is perfect timing for me as I travel with a C70 and lenses but have just bought the iPhone 14 Pro Max. As you point out, it’s very good but with limitations. I’m loving the cinematic mode and the fact that I can change focus in post. It’s great for capturing unplanned moments in a pseudo-cinematic style that can be cut into a film but it’s no replacement for something like my EOS R. I’d like a log style output for the cinematic mode though so that I can colour grade it easier.

I loved my EOS R back in the day, but if you ever get a chance to upgrade to a newer Canon camera, then you would be able to record in 10-bit color which makes a noticeable difference. Not saying that the EOS R video image looks bad but if you want flexibility in editing and you want to shoot in more challenging lighting conditions, the newer cameras are much better (and the 4k video isn't cropped like in the R which becomes an issue if your lenses aren't wide enough).

Pretty good comparison, but you left out two of the key advantages of the R10. Ergonomics and electronic viewfinder. These are particularly important for action photography. Shooting sports or birds in flight would be a nightmare on an iPhone.

even then, the Pro video mode is not true RAW or log footage so while you have more control, it's not the same as footage from a traditional camera. It's like editing a JPEG image rather than editing a RAW image. You can pull sliders but it doesn't affect the image the same way.

​@@onlysublime 1: Samsung S series phones from the S10 onwards give you log color (camera settings -> experimental features -> HDR 10+). It grades perfectly in Resolve by just dragging it in the timeline. 2: Any android phone can record uncompressed RAW video with the MotionCam app. I think the option for open gate 4:3 is as big of a deal as RAW. Using the full sensor area is a huge improvement, and gives you room to crop in to make vertical video from a horizontal shot. It's definitely a hassle, but with a MicroSD card, you can just pop the card out and plug the card directly into a laptop. There are issues with dropped frames when using open gate (non-issue with 16:9 full width) on an S20 FE, though that probably isn't an issue on newer/better devices. I just got done with a 2 minute video entirely recorded with a Galaxy S20 FE using an Aputure 200x as a key and a 100x as a fill, as well as some colored background lights. I can confidently say that RAW smartphone video is a game changer, and I hope that it will get easier to use in the future as the quality from my S20 FE is crazy close to an entry level APSC with a kit lens (fast aperture on phones somewhat makes up for the sensor size). For the price, the Pixel 6 has the best camera hardware, and its 1/1.3 inch sensor and fast lens should make it similar to the R10 and its kit lens as long as you don't need to crop in (but 12 MP gives some room to crop in)

@@onlysublime Did you read my comment? I said specifically with RAW video (not normal video). Either way, the 6A camera hardware could not be more different from the Pixel 6 that I mentioned. The 6 literally has a 4x bigger sensor than the 6A (1/2.55' vs 1/1.31'). That's even bigger than the difference between FF and Micro 4/3. I also said specifically an APCS with a kit lens. Phones have quite fast apertures, and the kit lens is what cripples entry level APSCs.

I have the R7 and recently went on a cross country trip with it and in has been a great camera, but I did find myself using my phone because of the convenience. I also brought my BlackMagic Pocket 6K and almost never used it because it is such a hassle to set up and use quickly. Great video! I completely agree!

I prefer using my R7. The 4k fine setting for video is awesome and that's using the 18-150 kit lens. The R7 is lighter and smaller than my 90D and in bright sunlight I can hold the camera up to my eye and film through the view finder. I mostly use my Samsung for taking photos in a store to remember a product and its current price

I actually find myself using 2 Cameras. A M3 with a ef-m - ef adaptor and my pocket 6k. One for photos and one for Videos. Yes the Pocket is a bit heavy. But i've got it dialed in to a point where using it is so easy. And you can add to that, that the pocket paired with a good lens and a good Tripod can get some pretty amazing shots if you take advantage of the codec. If not, it is just a heavy brick which can be replaced with quite a few other cameras. It is the old thing of knowing your gear and it's limitations.

Interesting take. I am traveling to Africa in July just to get a break from the filmlife, but still wish to capture some images on the go. I make photos with an EOS R and videos with the 6k, mostly at 4k using full sensor. It took a long time to get used to it and a lot of practice, but it is the key to the signature look people pay for.

Great video as usual. I would include the iphone's ability to install free apps specific to photography and video capture, including full manual control of the camera's exposure(even white balance control, etc.). another advantage is the ability to edit photos and videos directly on the iPhone itself. In addition, one of the main features that a camera should have today is the ability to share files on the Internet as quickly as possible. So it would be at least 3 more points for the iphone.

Totally agree. I find it very difficult to go out just with my iPhone14 because I own an R7, R8 and an R5, and all of these cameras coupled with even the 24-104 F4 L from Canon destroy anything the iPhone can do in terms of photo and they are pretty good for video also.

I use my iPhone 13 pro for video and photography using filmicPro and variable ND filters. I also use pro camera app to take pictures. I have full control of my Videos and Photograph. My videos I edited in Davinci resolve 18 and pictures using photoshop and lightroom. I can tell you that the iPhone is impressive.

I started shooting on a new Sony A6000 and still use it daily for my job. However, I now I have 4 Olympus cameras. Auto Eye II (1962), OM1 (1972) and OM2 (1982). The film cameras are incredible and capture things no modern phone or camera will. Authentic images and you have to compose without relying on tech as a crutch. As far as using a phone goes, it's a backup, but people saying they outperform cameras is just hilarious.

Thanks for making this video! I’m in real estate and I’m torn about buying a pro camera vs just using my iPhone. I’m gonna go ahead and get the Sony EV10. Not only bc the pics looks great but there’s something to be said about using a traditional camera over a phone. Clients just don’t wanna see a realtor take out his iPhone and shoot cuz they’ll feel like they can do the same thing and resent having to pay a lot of money for that.

Throw the zv-e10 in a little smart rig case and put a sigma 16mm on it and you have a beast of a little camera. The cage makes it look like a real camera to clients where the camera bare just doesn't look impressive like a full frame does. a Rode hot shoe mic or receiver on top also add that "I'm professional" look.

Great review! I’d give the R10 1-2 more points based on storage options, & price with proper storage. You can have 10 SD cards in your case for as much content as possible with the R10. With an iPhone, you’re limited to 128GB for their base model iPhone 14 Pro Max. If you want more, the price goes up. An R10 with a $200-300 additional lense is the same price as an iPhone 14 pro max with 256gb. Making the R10 superior. Low light pictures/video look 10x better than the iPhone with a $150 lense on the R10.

We own 4 Sony cameras and have been shooting on horizontal for years. Since we switched to iphone and vertical our views are at 359 million in 2022, yes the content is driving it but the camera doesn't matter as much. We bought a FX6 4 months ago and haven't even pressed record on it. IG, FB and TT work without needing the best 4k and the future is in your pocket not in a camera bag. Love your channel 💕

Absolutely great comparison. One point that wasn't really taken into account is the fact that the R10 has a viewfinder. In outdoor light this can be a game changer ... it is for me. I would have given the R10 at least 3 or 4 points just for that! OK, I'm biased! My intention when going on a trip, is to use my mirrorless camera (Lumix FZ300) for most of my shooting, but using a phone when I want to be a bit stealthier, like in a restaurant. Again, you did a great job.

As a video editor, I buy phone primarily for video capture. I mostly work with Panasonic equipment, but I also use my iPhone 13 Pro with the Filmic Pro app. However, the small size of the phone's chip can make it difficult to capture certain situations, like night or shadow shots. I've had to do a lot of extra post-processing to try and make the footage look more like it was shot with a camera, but this can add hours to the editing process. I processing mobile shots (mainly artefacts and weird noise which produce) using Topaz Video, which does a great job, but it still takes a lot of extra time. If you're capturing events ( i day shot, 1 day processing), it's probably not worth it and you should just use a camera. However, for daytime shots, the phone footage is more than usable. If you mix about 30% phone shots with 70% camera shots, it's unlikely anyone will notice the difference.

On android you can record raw video. Its an app that basically just takes a shit ton of pictures at the frame rate you want. And it looks beautiful. No post processing or anything. Just raw data.

Capturing in raw not help too with problems what I mention up. During night shot add little ISO (it has not good results of output - not bad but have to be postprocessed :) so it depands if you have time you can play with it) . Maybe using sony mobile with their inhouse capture software is different story.

@Nathan Šimčík my dude. You said it did bad with low light. Every phone uses their software to post process the image. The app Filmic doesn't get rid of that. No matter what phone you use. Shooting in raw will give you better results, and even better with editing. Yes it's still a small sensor with bad low light capabilities but it'll give you cleaner results, even better in daylight

That's exactly why I skipped all apsc and go for FX camera directly... Many phone nowadays even have 1inch sensor and crazy CPU+GPU and can shoot RAW, the only thing pulling back is just the lense but as AI developing so fast, phones have the potential to Fake a photo to the level that we can't distinguish between the real ones and fake ones(like bokeh etc). The strategy of phone camera is the good old "fake it till you make it".

It might be game over for FilmiC. Last Fall they moved to a subscription-based model. Unless you’ve purchased the previous version (v6, now dubbed ‘Legacy’) you’re tied to a weekly charge which is not insignificant. Goodies like ‘log’ or flat profiles costs extra. You can buy a used Panasonic G6 or Canon DSLR for what FilmiC charges at a yearly basis. Get an adapter to use M42, Minolta, Nikon or Canon FD lenses and you have a capable setup which won’t break the bank. It won’t record 4K, but gives very decent 1080p. The main advantage of a phone IMO is convenience. Need to share your work with the world quickly? No dedicated camera can do that so quickly and conveniently as a smartphone can. But ergonomically, it’s no contest really.

I've tried to get into photography with my iPhone and many previous phones, but it doesn't feel like I'm "doing photography". It just feels like I'm taking snapshots. I'm grateful that phones have such good cameras relative to their size, but it just never did it for me and still doesn't. Just seems like the quality is never good enough, as it is always over sharpened and "digital looking" Overall, if I want to do photography or videography specifically, like nice yearly vacations, family events, portraits, street photography, etc. I'll always take my Fujifilm. If I'm just going somewhere, my phone works in a pinch in case I didn't bring my camera.

Great review. The one area that you didn't cover (unless I some how missed it) was print. If you are someone like me who also strongly agrees that the best camera is the one you have with you, but also likes to print an exceptional photo when one occurs you know that no matter which phone you have, when you have the photo printed it will fall short. And you will wish you had taken it on a dedicated camera with a good lens instead of a phone. I would go so far as to say if you are going to buy a R10 and use it with kit lenses don't waste your money just get a phone with a good camera instead. One could argue that the iPhone is using the best lenses that are available to it, so if you are going to compare the R10 to the iPhone then compare it using the best lenses that are available to it, and don't even introduce the worse lenses that are available to it (aka kit lenses). At which point there is no longer a comparison. I have a Samsung S22 Ultra and I am amazed by the photos and videos it produces. But as far as the camera is concerned compare to my Canon R6 Mark II paired with my trinity of "L" series lenses the cameras on the S22 Ultra are mediocre at best. The would also applied to the iPhone cameras as well.

I was so much against videography with phone. Recently I bought Samsung S21 FE and made short video for fun for the boxing gym I visit and I was told that they never seen better one in 13 years of their existance. And I wasnt even trying and the reel video really looks better then some of that I made with 10k worth of camera gear. One hour of shooting, few hours of edit in app I never used before and boom, asked if I want to manage their marketing. Yes, it helped that I knew what I was doing because of 5 years of experience, but yup, Im not gonna invest in gear anytime soon and no, this is not for high quallity high paying clients, but I felt so free just to use one device for this kind of easy "work".

Also. Don't forget when you're attending some event / opera / movie / plays etc etc, they will allow you to keep your phone in your pocket, but might take away your camera battery or tell you to deposit your camera for that event (for the fear of you recording it). Ofcourse this probably doesn't happen in every country, but where I am currently residing, we have that problem. Even some places of worship limit the kind of imaging hardware you take inside. That is a huge plus for the smart-phone. Since it can do 99% of what a DSLR can do and a few more features that are exclusive to a smartphone. (like 3 attached lenses which you don't have to change. zoom, macro, wide)

@@borshonline I meant what it can do in terms of shooting modes. Like I've seen a soccer match where a person used the super zoom of an S22 ultra to shoot on the field. Ofcouse the image quality is garbage, compared to a DSLR and a good 200-500 mm lens, but the stadium would never allow you to carry a DSLR with that kind of range in a stadium. I meant the functions tha a mobile camera has are 99% there. The day mobile phones start rocking 2-3 inch sensors, they will be far more closer to a DSLR Image quality than today. And this could very well happen in the next 2-3 years.

7:05. No. Background blur, or rather Dept of Field, is due to distance to subject, aperture and focal length. Not so much a 'dedicated camera'. The iphone needs a WAAYY smaller focal length to give a similar FoV as the R10, thus have a larger DoF. Bokeh is a term for the quality of the blur, something which is also dependent on the number and shape of aperture blades in a lens.

Absolutely awesome, thanks. Sharknado junior racing through the pool killed it. Was not aware of iphone water resistance to that degree, gonna look up some other models then. Weather resistant cameras and lenses are limited and costly so that's a great workaround, protective cases are probably available as well. Sony's a6xxx series are supposedly not that solid and the 28-60mm is only rated as moisture resistant (and focal length too narrow anyway). I'm not shooting all weather action but do need the rainy or snowy option here and there. re. audio, 14:00. Internal R10 mic sounded perfectly usable, just tweak EQ a bit in post. re. native ios app - there's probably good options out there to gain more control (haven't checked that yet) re. value for money, M50 (II) and M6 kits are somewhere around half price of R10 or R50 now. Easily worth it for features highlighted here, typically incl. one of the pancake primes, good to go.

I don't know how many people noticed the R10 feature that it gives a a lot more detail and editing options after capturing the pic. Raw images are great for those who edit photos after they are captured. INSHORT camera captures a lot more details as compared to a Iphone, you can't do much with images after they are captured with Iphone
