iphone 15 pro--I skipped it for raw video on the google pixel 8

I have owned good cameras and iPhones for years, so I decided to merge the two. While the iPhone is getting better, it isn't capable of raw video like Android phones are now, thanks to an app called Motioncam.
I went to the local Apple store and shot on the iPhone 15 pro. It wasn't professional "real" camera quality, I felt.
The raw video quality on the google pixel 8 is better than I expected. It is dslr quality, in my view, and I find myself shooting more video because of the ease of use and image quality. Also, nobody bats an eye when I shoot on a cell phone. My cameras draw attention.
I use the pixel 8 as a video camera only and am hanging on to my old iPhone se. I also am keeping my Lumix gh6...but I find myself shooting on on the pixel more and more.

Great video By the way in the next update of Motioncam pro, you can shoot ProRes/HEVC 10 bit Log video. File size are smaller but Video Quality is still great. Probably will release in Early Feb.

The problem I have with Motioncam is that there is terrible rolling shutter when I use either of the 2 telephoto cameras on my Xiaomi 14 Ultra. A great video is more than just good image, dynamic range, and colors. It is also about motion rendering. Terrible rolling shutter is only good for scenes with little to no motion. In the native app of Xiaomi 14 Ultra the rolling shutter is significantly better. I also tried recording video using MCPro24 and turning on the digital stabilization fixes the rolling shutter issue. Unfortunately, there is no option to do this using Motioncam.

i totally understand the feeling. When i bought my new vivo x100 pro i hated that i cannot get a good video quality with a stock app and simply turn the stabilization off since it was cropping a lot. And when i was looking for the answers i sadly realized none of the existing apps support 10bit footage on my phone. So the only choice i got was the motioncam app. And it worked incredibly well. I never had a camera in my life but this one produces some unique high quality and insane flexibility. Yes, file size is enormous but it's a compromise upd: all of my lenses are supported. But 30fps is sadly the most i can get

Nice video, totally agree with you, the quality with RAW DNG is superb. I am using the Motion Cam app from the begining. I own the Pixel 7 Pro,latest bought the T7 SSD from Samsung and it works flawlessly, and 60 fps is working with the main camera for some slow motion videos. Iphone can't compete anymore in terms of pro video quality

My college buddy has an old Samsung 8 and we shot a bit of raw on that and although the quality wasn't quite up to par with the newer phone, it still looked really good. Slo mo, awesome!

When I discovered MotionCam, I too had the idea of using my phone as a raw video recorder. Moreover, I believe that Pixel devices have consistently delivered excellent photo quality. Having such impressive photo and video capabilities in such a compact device is truly incredible! However, I wonder whether MotionCam performs well on the Pixel 8, considering that its tensorship isn’t as robust as the second-gen Snapdragon 8. Does MotionCam run smoothly, or does it feel sluggish? Thanks for the video, and I’ll definitely check out your upcoming content!

So...overall I think it performs pretty well. Good autofocus, the exposure and colors are great, the detail is terrific. They are charging 12 bucks for cell phone raw! The quality is excellent, in my view. It has crashed twice on me in two months but I reinstall, which takes two minutes, and it is right back up and running. I think back though to when we first started pulling raw video out of Canon cameras with magic lantern...way more quirks. The only thing I can say is that I use my gh6 for framing up my own talking head. It is more flattering on my old face...but still I think the way motioncam renders an older face is organic and pleasing. I shot today and will get more pixel 8 video up soon.

Hi Len I'm a bit late to this video but glad i found it, the results look unreal. I purchased this phone a month ago and just discovered recently that it records in RAW via the video boost tab I want to edit the RAW clips in davinci resolve but i'm not sure what is the best way to go about it when it comes to initial colour mangement settings, camera raw settings and other settings What would you recommend to get started? and woould you recommend recording in motion cam RAW over the native google app?

Hey there the Davinci arri lut can look pretty darned good on this footage for bright outdoor sun shots. The colors are rich and filmy...but they can easily oversaturate, so I would go into color...then nodes...add a couple serial nodes...slap the lut onto your third or so node...and then go back to your first two nodes to desaturate and adjust exposure if needed. I built a couple luts for this app to use on the cinema dngs in Davinci and don't really know how to make them available to people. I need to figure that out! Also color transform, use timeline, rec 2020 color with cineon film log and then a fuji 60. Also, a phantom lut with the arri method of just slapping it on without a transform...ice blue...works well on this cinema dng format, at least for me in the footage I have.

@@formless4541 Sorry, just drop it into Davinci and play with the features on the color tab for starters...shadows, gamma, highlights, saturation. Then maybe drag the arri lut onto a node, which is just a color box that holds onto your current settings, and play with that. Hopefully that simplifies things a bit.

Hi, yes, it's motioncam. I bought the pro version for 12 bucks but keep the free version on the phone too. The pro version showed weird red video one time, so I uninstalled it and then installed again, which the app allows for no charge, and it works fine. That's the only glitch in a month of daily shooting with it. Overall it's a pretty great app that produces lovely video. There are tutorials out there that I used but if you get stuck on something let me know and I will try to talk you through it.

Hi, I just put the link at the bottom of the description. If you shoot and render from the motioncam app on the pixel 8 into the Samsung ssd, you can dump the raw cinema dngs right into Davinci without having to use android file transfer. If you render to internal storage on your phone you will have to dump the footage to an external or internal computer drive via android file transfer or the motioncam tools app (I prefer android file transfer) and then to Davinci. So the Samsung ssd drives that attach to your phone are faster and keep the phone free if you want to actually use your phone for something else. Once you do it a few times the workflow becomes pretty easy, I feel.

It is good in the samples I've seen, yes. I just like the detail, organic look, and flexibility of raw video. I think this is a little better and the luts I am making for it really allow a lot of creativity (and no that's not a pitch to sell anyone luts, I do this for fun). @@eduardoestebanab8049 The MLV app, yes. I like that app. I shot a lot of magic lantern raw on my 5dmark 2 but just sold it and my gh6 to get a bmpcc 6k g2. I wanted to keep all the cameras but a single teacher can't afford that ha. I can tell you that shooting motioncam raw with bmpcc 6k braw makes me want to shoot every day. Lots of great footage.
