They ALREADY have taken out the place of any DEDICATED cameras for everyday use in both photographs and videos. I believe that prosumer and even professional cameras (apart from super special expert cameras to be used in very specific tasks) will only remain alive due to their lenses as in the case of super macro ou tele photos with optical zoom. Got most right as I think the iPhone still needs a bit of work with the bokeh on on edges that should be in focus, but it's REALLY close. It amazing what computing power we can have in our pockets in the form of a phone. I don't think it will ever surpass an 'actual' camera due to the scale and constraint of the optics but there is major truth that 'the best camera is the one you have with you.

Last year, I silently switched from my A7III to my 13 pro max for everything. I didn't pull out the A7III at all. All of the photos that go to my clients are used online. None of my clients made a peep and I still ended up increasing my revenue. The main advantage for me was overall ease of workflow and not having to lug gear around everywhere. I notice the difference in appearance while editing and in a general sense, but my clients have zero clue that anything is different. We're entering a really cool era for photography tech imo.

Bravo! great video. I normally shoot with Lumix S series camera and ninja V. My actual iPhone is an old XR. I must say honestly that the main reason for me to grab a 15 is the new feature to shoot video in Log. Concerning image quality I think new iPhones with multiple lenses etc are not so super different from the old X to 14 models. The evolution of the portrait mode is very interesting but for serious stuff I won't move from mirrorless to phones.

@hummersd
@hummersd 7 ай бұрын
Probably comes down to if the new feature(s) on the latest and greatest iPhone are worth changing/upgrading. 14 Pro to 15 Pro probably not so much unless the hand-feel difference is important to you, but 14 Pro Max to 15 Pro Max and the 5x camera is really great. (I'm also on the iPhone Upgrade Program, and since the pricing didn't change, why wouldn't I upgrade -- but in the event price increases in future years, that will be the deciding factor if the feature(s) of the new phone are worth changing phones.)

If you know cameras and know what the iPhone and all other phone makers are doing you’ll easily spot which one is which. Tip? Dedicated camera is willing to blow out the highlights a bit more. That’s your first clue to which ones which. Amazing comparison to show what a phone is capable of. Love my 15 Pro!

Great comparison. The prettiest photos from... iPhone. My A7 IV is in the closet and now I take 99.9% of my photos with the iPhone 14 Pro which takes great photos, to get the same effect on the Sony I have to save the photos to disk, edit them e.g. in Lightroom to get such colors and especially I have to fight with overexposures or behind dark parts of the photo. On my iPhone, I have everything balanced and ready right away without any problems. Oh, and I do exactly what you always do, lower the exposure a little bit on the iPhone 📲 🙂

The way to see the difference fairly easy between the larger format lenses and the iPhone is vignetting light fall off is seen on the larger format zoom lens do to extreme curvature of the lens elements. Which says a lot about the other capabilities of such a small camera phone.

Very interesting. Of course on KZbin we cannot see the fine details but for most uses, the iPhone 15 PM is up there. The video potential appears even more groundbreaking. When Phil Schindler first demonstrated the potential to change 'bokeh' in Portrait mode photos after the fact, a member of the audience involuntarily shouted, "No way!". Now it is possible, in Cinematic mode, to change focus areas, rack-focus etc. in video, after the fact. Computational photography has got the advantage. If Apple brought out a dedicated camera incorporating all the current Apple tech, the competition would wither and retreat.

Hi Peter, I am sure there will be those out there saying that phones are the future or those saying cameras are, well I say that both will just get better and better as time goes on. On the affordability side, I think that people would rather get a new phone than a new camera every 2 or 3 years. I am pro camera, because you have more control over your shot and data transfer is much easier than the phone, but that is my experience at the moment. I have a Iphone 13 and a Canon 77d. I shoot more with the camera than the phone, even though the phone has 4K video, it is all about the transfer for me. Great video and I couldn't tell the difference, it was that well done, again great video. Hannes from South Africa in the Nelspruit town.

The fact that it is remotely close to a 10x the cost camera, that is good enough to use. It is just the edges that even photographers say show the difference between the 2. Especially when it comes down to editing on both devices. I have a side photography business and use iPhone 15 Pro Max and am doing well. It also is great for younger generation because of what they are used to and those are camera shy. Will phone cameras replace mirrorless? Maybe because of the next generation and what they are used to but not because of phone camera being all around better than mirrorless

What’s really interesting to see, when you do the dual filming 5 vs 15 in the beginning, your face looks «better»/more contrasty on the iphone 5 footage, while on the iphone 15 footage the facial features looks more «smeared» or flat, almost like there is some «facial blur smoothing» going on - could be the youtube compression not being able to pick up all the tiny different shades of color on your face though, hard to say without seeing the original 15 footage - but hopefully will be able to see for myself in a months time, finally switching from my X to a brand spanking new 15 Pro Max :D

I chose my iPhone 15 Pro Max over my Sony A1! I sold all of my Sony gear, including the A1, A7rIV, and a dozen or so GM lenses such as the 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400, 200-600 G, and 600 GM. When I traveled, I used to carry 2-4 packs of gear. While my iPhone may not be as good, it is about 80% as capable, and I don't miss carrying it around. With 30 plus years of shooting experience, I can confidently say that the iPhone is the best "overall" camera I have ever owned, and it keeps getting better every single year. I still carry a drone, and most of my most satisfying shots come from it, mainly due to the unique perspective and composition not possible with any terrestrial-based camera at any price. A smartphone is a "Real" camera.😎🤙

Great video ! I don't believe smartphones can replace a professional camera for at least two reasons. First, unless we buy a specific accessory for it, we can't attach a ND filter on a smartphone which is important for a correct exposure when shooting video outside with the right shutter speed and natural motion blur. Then even if now we have the possibility to have various focal lenses on a smartphone, it's at the moment far from being on par with a camera when in comes to image quality. When it comes to DoF on smartphones it looks natural but it depends on the distance with the subject and also the focal lens imo. Now depending on the type of photos or videos we're making it's totally possible to get a result where it's hard to tell if it was taken from a camera or a smartphone. That will depends on skills

On a 5” phone screen, without pausing, I missed two on the first sequence (I wasn’t paying as much attention) but got them all on the second sequence. Phones won’t beat a standard mirrorless, until we get quite a bit further into AR/3D maps and better computationals. But honestly story is the most important thing in film making. That and audio and light, I would put video in literally last place. Especially for my style. Cameras and lenses can get you an interesting effect but but without story, light and sound design, it will just be shit in HD. 😜

Hey Peter! I can see this part of the near future when large mirrorless cameras are fully integrated to software like Android operating systems competing with IOS/computational photography. We already have phones in the market doing computational photography and there's the Sony Xperia phone with real mechanical zoom in their lenses. The merge will happen when sony cameras integrate phone technology like Android to which you will have access to services like Google Photos or other cloud platforms directly on the cameras. I'm sure Sony has thought of this because their Creator's Cloud and those new Sony apps seem to be heading that direction already.. with time.. it will happen sooner than expected and this merge will be the new hype in photography/videography just like Sony did when released the mirrorless technology. I'd love for you to dive into a topic like this of what we may get in the future.. that would be awesome 👍

Got only one wrong with the first batch. But like other have said, when you are shooting in good conditions, only photographers like myself will really be able to tell the difference between them. Only when you start doing other things such as telephotos, macros, and shooting in bad conditions will there be a clearer difference. I personally don't think that phones will ever be able to over take cameras simply for the reason that you are limited in what you can capture at high quality. As soon as you start to zoom or shoot at a focal length that you don't have optical in the phone, then it will be obvious that it was taken with a phone.

Bra video Peter!

Shooting a car is a relatively easy subject because it has straight lines whereas persons are way more difficult with their hair etc. Hair against foliage in the background is still a much bigger problem. However it is obvious that phone cameras are developping much (!) faster than system cameras. In the latter case, software like Lightroom/ photoshop seem to take over this task of computational photography.

Just the fact that with the camera you have more control, more agility, more angles, you can choose lenses with focal lengths of up to 0.95mm, lenses that distort, not to mention that with the camera you have perfect movements when doing this . If you want something stabilized, and the fact of buttons, accessories, the iPhone 30 can have professional cameras and it still wouldn't be used professionally. It's the same as saying that an iPhone replaces a calculator, even today those with buttons are used.

I got all of them right... The bokeh roll off still looks so digital and unnatural to me with the iPhones. Obviously they've come a long way and for most people the iPhone is plenty of camera for quick family pics or social media. But, for prints and real work they have a long way to go. You can really see it side by side when you get in closer the phone pics just fall apart. Also in the dynamic range and color reproduction when editing. Of course you know all this but aside from that phone cameras can be quite useful and still take some pretty good photo's! And no, I don't think phones will ever overtake mirrorless cameras or whatever the next evolution beyond mirrorless is. Simply because the technology in professional cameras is also growing at an exponential rate! Annnnnnd sensor size matters hahaha

This is the thing, why would you use both camera and try them to look the same. That is not the point, by doing that you are only limiting the camera. Plus it is easy to spot the difference on a pc. But to be fair it is more difficult in a 6 inch screen.

I think that a device wich is specialized for a task will always be better than a device that’s not only for that specific task. So, yes, the Smartphones today are insanely good but there is always the need for features and the optical build that only have the cameras specific for that. But for the hobby shooter or the beginner a smartphone today is more than enough and over 95% of the people don’t need an extra camera.

I got like 50:50, the new iPhone’s images looks so great especially on small phone screen, there is barely any noticeable difference to me! I still don’t think phone camera will beat real camera that has much larger sensor and better glasses in front of it , it’s physics. Phones do computations, so do cameras nowadays, by having dedicated AI processors. But I’d love to see the gap being closed, cameras can’t beat phones in terms of accessibility!

_Look at what The cinematographer/Director did with the iPhone 7 Plus. He was the one that got all of this started. The iPhone 12Pro is what spark the attention of many pro photographers then videographers with the iPhone 13Pro, now we have cinematographers looking at the iPhone 15Pro, and with ProRes log recording the iPhone 15 Pro already started the takeover._

To be honest, I was right in all the photos, but only because photography is my hobby, in any case, a beautiful and well-invested video.

I don't understand why no youtuber has created a comparison with a more "realistic" camera like a portable one...

The difference is the zoom and the resolution about that. iPhone losses a lot of image quality in large focals

I’ve seen surprisingly many cases where an iPhone image is clearly not accurate, and yet looks subjectively better. Occasionally, it even seems more accurate too, even though it’s clearly not.

Just starting out we can’t all afford a 10k camera some of us might only be able to use are phones are very cheap cameras to start I think some photographers forget that when they make comments because there so far removed from it

I think that the iPhone is a great tool for run and gun. Here, you shown the "raw" pictures from both devices. But we have to keep in mind that apple does add some post processing, and the Sony doesn't. I think that taking the same pictures and then editing them, you will still have more creative control using the sony

I don’t think athée iPhone or any phone for that matter will ever replace a “real” camera… BUT as a photographer, my iPhone will always be with me. It is now part of my photographic gear that I wouldn’t go without.

You should compare the iPhone 15 Pro Max to a $500 DSLR like the Canon EOS R100 or similar.

I think phones will always be limited to physics and not being able to house a larger sensor (and not sacrifice battery life). Computational photography has done well progressing, but in low light I'm still finding the iPhone isn't holding up well, even with Night Mode. Granted, I think based on the average user looking at content on iDevices, it's "good enough", and with the advent of Vision Pro it's heading down yet another path (spatial photos and videos), but with respect to dedicated cameras and lenses vs. phones, there will still be a market for each. (Let's just hope major brands like Sony figure out a lens system like Canon's dual lens so they also can create spatial videos at a higher quality similar to 2D photos.)

They ALREADY take out the place of any DEDICATED cameras for everyday use in both photographs and videos. I believe that prosumer and even professional cameras (apart from super special expert cameras to be used in very specific tasks) will only remain alive due to their lenses as in the case of super macro ou tele photos with optical zoom. Depends on where the photos will be used, for social media phones are enough but for professional use they can't replace real camera.
