Tip- Inspect screen for any discoloration after you're done. I had a purplish blue smudge mark in the middle of the screen that would go away when I opened the phone again. It was caused by the aftermarket battery being slightly thicker than normal causing pressure on the LCD from underneath. The battery had 2 layers of stickers on it for some reason, removing 1 layer alleviated this pressure and the discoloration was gone.

Great video, very helpful. I had the same experience with my battery not wanting to come off the backing paper, but the tool kit I bought along with my battery (from Amazon) came with two guitar-pick-shaped tools, and I used one of those to pry the battery up little by little, around the edges. For a rank novice like me, it was a mostly successful op... with thanks to this really good tutorial. I am much appreciative of this man's work and manner.

Thanks so much for giving my iPhone 5 from 2014 a few more miles! I actually found it very difficult to remove the battery due to the strong adhesive stickers. .. it ended up cracking up and it set off some sparks, but the rest went well. Very useful!
@Doppo69 Жыл бұрын
There’s pull tabs at the bottom of the battery you supposed too pull them out at 90 degrees slowly and the battery comes free as long as don’t snap as you pull But that’s what the stickers are designed for
@quantum.starhop7 жыл бұрын
Important!! There's a black strip running across the bottom of the battery that's connected to the glue strips. It's not the tape that wraps around the bottom of the battery; it's just below that. First, heat up the back of the phone under the battery with a hair dryer to soften the glue a bit. (If you forget to do this, the strip is likely to break when you pull on it.) Then pull the strip out slightly and snip it in half with scissors. This allows you to pull each glue strip separately. Gently, firmly, and evenly, steadily pull each strip out; there will be a squeaking noise as the glue strip stretches. Careful! If it breaks you're going to have to pry the battery out. The stretched strip gets about a foot long if you let it, but I like to grab it close to the battery so it's less likely to break prematurely. After both strips are removed, the glue is gone and the battery will lift out easily.

Thanks for posting this video, very helpful. I also read some the comments before starting my battery replacement, so I did pay attention to which screws came out of each location. I wanted to avoid removing the screen, but it was impossible (for me) to get the battery to lift up from the bottom. I removed the screen as indicated, and then pried the battery out from the top. It definitely took much longer than shown in the video. I was careful not to bend the old battery excessively during removal, and did not experience any smoke, fire, or injury during the extraction. Getting the wiring clips reattached did take some doing. I did test the iPhone before closing everything up. The touch screen, and finger print button worked fine, but the phone did not pick up my voice when asking Siri a question. I reseated that wire connector, and reassembled the phone. This time everything worked fine. The new battery does seem to be discharging rather quickly. I will let it deplete to about 10% charger before recharging. I will know by tomorrow if the new battery is holding a charger better than the old one.

Got the screen off and battery disconnected, and let it air out in the really hot dry air here at the moment, with a fan blowing on it. 12 hours later, followed the second half of the video, and phone is back together and appears to be working properly.

thank you for your excellent video! Replaced my battery and the hardest part was getting the battery off that sticky tape! We've used a manicure tool as a screw driver - it's hard thin metal fitted like a dream into those tiny screws. Screen had weird lines on when re-starting but discovered the old battery bend the plate under the screen and when pushing it back into the frame caused the lines. The weird blue vertical line running from top to bottom which appeared on my screen a few weeks ago was a warning sign of a battery on it's way out of my phone - it actually pushed the screen from the frame while we were sleeping, only noticed it halfway through the next day. Only 'damage' on my phone after 4 years of use, not a single scratch on it or any other issues - super impressed with iPhone
@chrisjw376 жыл бұрын
Used this technique just now. Cannot leave the screen attached as another video suggested because the battery is stuck so well down it has to be levered from the top, not the side - that just bent the battery = risk of immediate fire!

@lancebaker13747 жыл бұрын
It is not absolutely necessary to remove the screen. Once you get it open, find a small box (about 3x3x5 inches) and put a rubber band around the box and the screen. That holds the screen vertical and out of the way.
@thrash13373 жыл бұрын
Just remove it, the box might slip and fall or the phone could slide on the surface. Prying the battery off the phone is not a gentle process and having tension on those thin screen cables could damage them.

I've watched and used a lot of your videos to much success, but this video is a dangerous situation waiting to happen (and it did). You should really make a note that most older iPhone 5S's batteries WILL NOT come out easily. I ended up breaking mine in the middle causing smoke and cuts on my left hand (the one I was prying it up with) due to the battery casing breaking. For anyone watching this with a semi old iPhone 5S, DO NOT FORCE THE BATTERY. I would try iFixit's method of cutting the battery removal tab and pulling the adhesive strips out from under the battery instead. At least put an annotation to warn your viewers!

Heat is your friend if you can use it in the proper way. Apply some heat with a hairdryer on the back plate where the battery is located evenly. Try to pry it every once in a while from different angles to see if it loosens. Use the metal frame as a support for the plastic pry tool and never try to force it under the battery or you'll damage the ribbon cable on the top section. The battery is not 100% flush to the case so I always find a good spot for leverage.
@DaisyReese7 жыл бұрын
Mine was apparently very old. The battery itself was mushy so as I tried to pry it up it was bending as if the battery casing was full of play dough. I ended up using tweezers to bend off the edges closest to the phone case (not the parts side) then slowly shoving a credit card under it and wiggling it. It took all about 15mins of gently push, rug and wiggle. I ended up with an uber deformed looking old battery. Very glad I removed the screen. No way I could have removed the battery with the screen attached and not damaging the ribbons.

While I'm sure this vid was made with the best intention, this in NOT AT ALL how you are supposed to do it! 1. You are not supposed to pry the battery (this could break the battery and harm your iphone and YOU) , instead the adhesive strips underneath the bat. have TABS located at the BOTTOM END which will allow you to pull them out without moving the bat. 2. Putting a wrong (too long) screw in the bottom right hole of the mainboard assembly plate will PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR MAINBOARD, and you will have to get a new one. If unsure, better leave this one hole unscrewed (pun intended)!

Actually, if u look at replacement batteries online, you will find that all look the same, but there is a wide range of pricing. You can pick up a battery for iPhone 5s for anywhere from $5 to $50. But don't let looks fool you. From experience, MOST (not all) of the more expensive batteries hold charge for longer, and just seem to have better battery health. Yes it is true that these batteries are very hard to make, so no bootleg company is gonna be able to make these. But that doesn't mean all batteries are created equal. I wish I could tell you as to how or why this happens. I don't know. It may be that the cheaper batteries are taken from the plant at some point before they've been finished and tested. Or once a battery is made, they test them and if they don't have a high enough voltage, they may throw them out where they're picked up and distributed somehow. Who knows. But fact remains, a new battery from apple is just that, new. The battery u buy online for $5 may say new, but is it? Conspiracy.. apple did admit to throttling phones performance based on battery life.

You know it's not that easy. For EVERYONE who actually needs to do this, it is very hard to get the battery off. It's always easy to do on a phone that has never been used as it's not that sticky. What advice do you have for actual phones that have been used for a year or so? A heat gun? Or pry and bend the battery until the batter is damaged? And install a new battery? Thanks
@JerryRigEverything10 жыл бұрын
Marcel Jones Yes, you can use a heatgun. I explain a little more in my iphone 6 video.

Followed this instructional and replaced my iPhone 5s battery. Took a while to pry the battery out, but it came out fine, but a bit bent :). Fitted the new battery & re assembled. All up and running, fingerprint sensor and all controls working. Hopefully, it give me another year or two, until I decide to upgrade. Many Thanks!

If you have a friend of yours it can make the job much eaisier, just tell him to hold the screen firmly for you, that way you'll focus only on the battery and ignore the step where you disconnect and reconnect the screen cables.

My battery is not coming out so easily and it's bending, kinda like clay in duct tape. No wonder it wasn't charging up properly and going from 100% to 0 in minutes
@jasperwhyte92276 жыл бұрын
Scorpio Rabbit the batterys are all made like that and you need to heat the back up and that well soften the tape that holds it in place then it well come off a little easier

Why can't it be simple like an android???

not really i've had androids all my life and recently got an iphone as i got sick of ghost touch on my last two android phones. I now have a 5s and it''s a joy to use it just "works" so now i'd rather buy an iphone as I want a phone that's reliable and not prone to dodgy cheap screens. Most android 5.5" screens have ghost touch issues eventually, just google it as they all come from the same factories in China using cheapo components in the screen sensors and also badly positioned sensors that overheat with time and become damaged.
@ojomann17 жыл бұрын
I'm android user because it's "open source" and thus can be modified. Never had anything bigger than 5.2" though and will stick to that as my biggest. Now I don't doubt iPhone quality (and apple as such), but as the tech I am, everything I have is rooted and modified of some sort. Together with the proprietary solutions apple uses, my choice is "simple" :) I should mention that (in general) the components used in expensive android gadgets are as good as apple's. You get what you pay for. And android have a plethora of different devices to choose from. Apple is one only (ofc the -s -c -plus variants or whatever they call them) ;)
@SteveTurnbull6667 жыл бұрын
sure and i have also rooted fire tablets, samsung galaxy note phones with various roms, to be honest rooted does not = better imo. Usually they come with their own bugs and quirks and rooting devices is not that difficult, non-technical people just think it is. Rooting devices just sounds cool and geeky. I would most likely still be with android if it wasn't for the poor build quality. I'm sure Samsung S7 and other premium android phones are decent build quality but then i'd be paying almost as much as an Iphone and at least with Iphone it's only a single platform so the apps very rarely crash in my experience, they are much more robust than the apps on android which has to cater for a variety of hw platforms and many variants of Android OS.

Great Tutorial, i admire you patience and hand coordination, especially because i tore open my case, broke a cable, lost 3 screws and ended up with my power button and home button and screen not working. Basically i plugged it in and i stared at my not working phone for a good half hour. Rip, time for an android...
@erikyoung15656 жыл бұрын
Worked like a champ, take your time and be patient/organized. Pay special care on the battery removal to avoid bending. If you pry the one end of the battery up enough at the bottom of the phone (avoiding the computer stuff at the very bottom you can press the plastic tool under the battery as far as you can to lift more straight instead of bending the battery which is bad. Mine started to smell when it bent so I shoved the plastic tool under the battery far as i could from the area towards the bottom of the phone and it straightened out and finally came loose. As you shove it under the battery it should start to lift and straighten. Good luck!

Jerry, thank you for this video. I appreciate the pace in which you gave direction, I was able to replace the battery without any problems. I would suggest taping a paper towel down on the table, desk or where ever your working. The screws are very tiny and have a tenancy to bounce around without the paper towel.

Thank you. Replacing the battery in 2020 I found the glue or sticky stuff holding the old battery in place very solid and required a substantial amount of pressure to remove it, more than the plastic tool could handle (it broke) and I had to use a metal lever, The old battery was destroyed in the removal process. I was very careful not to raise the screen more than 90 degrees, but the cables were very stiff, as though they had dried out and when I first put the phone back together there were vertical lines on the screen and it was unresponsive, I took it apart again and attempted to re-seat the cables at the screen end by taking off the camera and pressing them in. This worked for the touch responsiveness, but the vertical lines were still there (although much faded), they disappeared after about 10 minutes of use. Phone seems to be working fine now - well worth the effort.
