The look on his face is the same as mine after I fix something. The inner pleasure and gratitude after seeing that you have managed a repair, is indescribable. This is the expression of the face of a man who likes what he does more than the money he receives for repairs. It's more than a job or a hobby ... it's a fulfillment to know that something has come out of your hands that will bring joy to the face of others and that you have managed to bring back to "life" something that others would have thrown at garbage.

I remember repairing an audio digital reverb unit when I was in college 30 years ago. The problem was that the unit would run for 10 minutes and then the audio output started outputting this shrieking noise. If you turned it off for 20 minutes it would run for another 10 minutes before shrieking again. I knew this had to be heat related. Since I was in college and therefore had no money for equipment, I used a frozen package of hot dogs from my freezer, and touched each component with the frozen hot dogs. When I touched one of the voltage regulators, the shrieking noise instantly stopped. A couple dollars for a replacement regulator and the $600 digital reverb was saved.

Just curious. I'm not an expert in this field, and watch for fun. What's the purpose of that removed capacitor as it does not need to be there for the functionality? Is there any backup for it?
@EtaYorius2 жыл бұрын
I was going to ask that. So just removed it, no need to replace it?
@chrisv61262 жыл бұрын
He has explained this in other videos. They are filters that work together to protect other ICs. As Alex has put it, "say you have 100 police officers protecting a building, if one of those officers calls in sick, the building is still well protected". Hopefully I got that right.
@MrLukxas2 жыл бұрын
It is a bypass capacitor. It is there, with many others, to remove any noise that could be present on the DC line. If removed it's not gonna harm a lot of the functionality of the circuit board but ideally should be replaced. It is not because of the crowded area and possibly knocking off the neighbouring components, thus creating more damage and more work to do, to fix it.
@tinojsachintha78852 жыл бұрын
@@MrLukxas thanks for the info buddy
@tefatronix2 жыл бұрын
As someone already said, it is a bypass/decoupling capacitor. You can also think of it as a sort of local power source near a chip. If a chip draws power in short spikes, having long traces will cause a voltage drop and then a peak as the current drops again, as the traces are essentially like a small coil, an inductor, and the higher the inductance, the more it will resist fast changes in current. So the cap can deliver the spike quickly and then recharge slowly. They can also have different purposes, filtering in conversion of voltages - as many of the parts run on different, very low voltages. These will be near coils and power conversion chips. Also timing, etc. So if there are more of them in parallel, knocking one off will likely not impair functionality, as the design has some "margin", but if it is easily possible, and it's clear that it is on a power rail for decoupling, it's better to put another one (maybe 10nF-10uF, closer to 100n if unsure) in place for stability.

Thanks Alex for the video, I am just wondering if you heat the flux brick and then pour the flux liquid into the atomizer, wouldn't that be easier.

I see on the market is new laser soldering station, did you have experience with it or did you now something about this new technology
@NorthridgeFix2 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but based on first impression, I hate the blinding red light it emits. I don't know if you can hold it or have control on how far or close you can be from the board. or if you can narrow the heat spot rather then burn half the board to desolder one component. With hot air you can increase air speed and reflow a BGA chip using air pressure and see the chip dance, with laser that's not possible. Again i haven't tried the machine, but that's what I concluded based on few videos I watched.

Hi, can you make a video about peelable solder mask product like MG Chemical 862-250ML if this product would help SMD soldering noob by covering parts and PCB surface? When I try to fix phones or very small items packed with tiny SMD parts , they often get stick together ! It was so annoying to undo the mass with my crappy setup. You think peelable solder mask would prevent this from happen?
@adrock08012 жыл бұрын
@NorthridgeFix: It looks like you are always working with camera only, not using a stereo microscope. Aren't you missing the "real" 3d view this way? I wonder how it is possible to work precise enough this way. Or is it only a matter of experience? So far I am using a stereo microscope, but as I am viewing glasses, it is very inefficient to put them off/on all the time between the different working steps when soldering / desoldering etc.

@mrshaunkim2 жыл бұрын
Same question I have. It just works without it? What's the point of that capacitor, then?
@TheThore2 жыл бұрын
It can stay out, as is is a bypass cap. It is meant to filter out noise (works like a flattener). There are some of them, so one cap lost will not break the system, the filtering is still good enough. Some lower farat caps in parallel work better than only one bigger cap. But if you have 4, 5 bypass caps, and remove one, it usually is still good enough for the device to work properly.

designed to short over time so you'll buy a new iphone manufacturers are using engineering and design to add "failure" at a specific time instead of designing things to last long.

caps are always under load, like anything else they start breaking down and fail over time kinda like a lightbulb....as for why one would fail before another it could just be due to manufacturing tolerances but its better to not look that deep into it

Usually mechanical damage due to thermal stress. This is a very typical failure often seen in automotive electronics they usually install two capacitors in series’s for critical items such as Avionics
