Here's the thing: If you check social media a lot and have tik tok and Snapchat, I can see why people would prefer the bigger screen of the 13 or mini. I use my phone for calls, texts and essential app usage. I had a four year old Android phone which was running out of memory. I went for the 128 gig SE. I had gift vouchers which took a third off the price.. I also bought an I pad mini off e Bay before getting the phone as my old 10 gig Android tablet was starting to fail. I have had the I phone 5 weeks and I am pleased with the choice. Yes, the bigger size 13 is £300.00 more but is it £300.00 better? Incidentally my brother who had an iPhone 8 plus, got an iPhone 11 pro max. He uses all the apps I mentioned so he would be more concerned with battery life and screen size. To finish, I have 60 percent life left on my phone after making calls, using I tunes in the car and that was from charging up 17 hours ago. It is a pocket rocket!

I had the 2020 SE for a while and liked it as an upgrade from the iPhone 6 at the time. I got a screaming trade-in deal for the 12 mini, and have since moved on to the 14 (another trade-in deal), but there is a lot to like about the old form factor. The Home button fingerprint to unlock is still an excellent design and the cameras on the SEs are still great at the pricepoint. For those wanting the older form factor and wanting the older home button style functionality, this is a good way to go.

I decided to take a chance, based on your review, and traded in my iPhone 12 Pro for the 2022 SE. I was worried I would miss the bigger phone and more premium specs, but honestly, I don't. This phone suits my needs so well. Beyond well, actually. I love it. So easy to hold, has many of the features (like wireless charging) that the more expensive phones have, has amazing specs and speed. Photos are exellent. Charging is fine. I have the color red, and it's so beautiful...and of course, the fingerprint reader (which is a negative and a postive in itself). My only complaint, is the bezels. I get why Apple did it, but it's such a downer. They could easily do what they did with the Mini line, and make it almost full screen with face ID...or, take a note from Android, and do an in-screen fingerprint reader. Other than that one minor thing, this phone rocks. Thanks for helping me make a great decision!

something i don't see a ton of people talking about, is this phone not only hits a much lower price point, but also i can reach the whole screen with my tiny hands, which i cannot say about nearly any other phone on the market still. even other budget or smaller phone like the 12/13 mini. yes they are smaller but the screens are much bigger so i still need both hands to access all the phones features.

I don’t think Apple use this design because of a nostalgia hit so much as they have surplus of these parts having used them for years prior and that allows them to make them cheap as they don’t need a new design budget, new tooling, etc.

I’ve said since they announced this phone they should put Touch ID in the power button and make the iPhone SE full screen. As the iPhone 12 and 13 mini proves, you don’t need the biggest phone to have a decent screen size. I’m currently on the iPhone 13 mini because it offers a full screen despite being smaller. I do think if Apple had made the SE full screen we wouldn’t be getting the massive kind of hate for it. Me personally the iPhone SE 2020 design grew on me over time. But the battery life wasn’t good. If they improved it now then I say having options is never a bad thing.

Apple made the mini as a SE replacement but sales were 5 million plus behind the SE. This shows that the SE is still wanted and that a compact phone is difficult to sell at £700. Analysts suggest 30 million SE sales in a year which is 4X more than mini sales. 🤔

thinking of trading in my 11 pro for this new SE... ive always wanted the retro iphone but unfortunately had an android loving family so i always had android lmfao. and i like the Y2K camera without the blur this phone has. and the haptic feedback on the button is super satisfying.

I am now on the 7 plus. Last year I bought and used for few months the 12 pro max. But I did not like it, as it would get hot at the back due to it's big screen I guess? after that I 'down graded' to the 7 plus, I wish the battery is bigger though. I wish they would make se plus'. That I would buy for sure.

Apple missed the point of the compact SE completely. Instead of buying the new SE, I bought a new battery for my original 2016 SE. I still have a good battery for the entire day thanks to the 4inch screen and a headphone jack. I only use my original SE to make calls, texting and GPS. When I get home I use my tablet to play games which I never do with my original 2016 iPhone outside to keep alert.

I'm very confused at how Josh defends the SE as intentionally "retro" to target a "niche" audience that misses the old iPhone design, but at the same time dismisses that those same people will obviously want the headphone jack. It just doesn't make any sense. Personally, I don't believe people are right to defend the SE when from a business perspective, it's pretty dang obvious they are using up old inventory in order to sell a cheaper iPhone at a high profit margin. This isn't Apple catering to a niche audience, it's Apple being Apple.
@jvtechtea2 жыл бұрын
Both can be true: that a new product has an old design, and also a feature is no longer considered a priority by manufacturers. I get the sentiment that a headphone jack fits under a retro umbrella but my point is that it just isn’t a basic trope in mainstream smartphones anymore. It’s something you see more often in budget devices, and I wouldn’t go quite as far as to say the SE is really a budget device. It’s Apple’s most affordable iPhone in the current zeitgeist (not counting used or previous generations), but hardly budget. I’m also not really trying to defend a product - I’m mainly expressing how there are a bunch of people that resonate with the design of the SE, as old as it is. Whether or not the underlying reason why the iPhone SE continues to be made is due to old inventory or high profit margins, the fact is the SE is one of Apple’s most sold devices. If anything, I’m just exploring out loud who those people are who make the 2020 iPhone SE one of that year’s best selling smartphones.

I see where you are coming from Josh, and it's great to see people trying to see the bigger picture. However, I'm curious if perhaps you might be over-thinking things. You said it yourself, it's the cheapest iPhone available. I'd say that's more than enough reason for sell as well as it does, especially with how so many people either want in, or can't leave Apple's ecosystem. And if there are people buying the SE for its retro looks, it's more than likely a tiny minority over the ones buying it because it's the cheapest iPhone. It's kind of the same situation that happened with the headphone jack. It didn't die because people didn't want it, it died because they were forced to put up with its absence if they wanted a new shiny phone. I'd wager it's the same with this design, people put up with it because its the only way to get into the apple ecosystem for cheap.

2:39 thats not actually entirely true. while this is a way of activating apple pay, simply holding your phone near the card reader while resting (not even pressing) your finger on the fingerprint scanner will let you pay. I actually find it way more intuitive and reliable than the way its done with face-id iphones.

It's cheap bc they're reusing the amortized engineering and existing manufacturing tooling and inventory. Plenty of people prefer the home button over gestures. Same with bezels, many don't mind and at least they spare users the glaring asymmetric notch. Dated design? OK, but the latest "modern" iphones reach back to design elements way older. If it had the features of upscale iphones it would be redundant - those phones already exist up the range. It's a cheap utility iphone for those who don't want or need the better cameras up the range (or can't afford it). 5G only helps future proof it.

Great video Joshua! I had been thinking, would it be great if Apple had decided to put an XDR display instead of recycling the LCD panels from the past? I mean, the form factor is retained, bezels/touch ID would be still there and it would mean all the current iPhones have an OLED panel! Barring the iPhone 11 though… This would still retain the market demographic giving them an option to enjoy the benefits of an OLED panel. Also, since the panel would be thinner compared to LCDs in general, there’s a slight room for a bigger battery… just a thought!
@Mancan762 жыл бұрын
It’s all about cost. Making an OLED display for the SE would have raised the cost because new molds/manufacturing lines/etc would have had to be made for the screen. This LCD screen has been produced since 2017 on the iPhone 8, and those manufacturing lines only get cheaper to use over time. Same concept with the whole design. It’s cheaper.
