Think of the 12MP photo from the Xperia Pro-I as a cropped image on the RX100 1" 20MP sensor using an F2.0 lens. It is still amazing! Some may think the equivalent FF aperture value is not that outstanding (compared to mirrorless, but of course), but that affects the optical bokeh, not the light sensitivity of the sensor. Think of it this way, when I use Sigma APSC 16mmF1.4 lens on my FF a7RIII, I get a very good low light photo from my sensor, but at 18MP instead of 43MP. This is because the aperture F1.4 remains the same for exposure together with ISO and SS. The crop mode from the APSC lens only means I have to step away from the subject to get an equivalent frame from a FF, hence less bokeh relative to the background. The size of the pixels in the sensor and the aperture of the lens remain the same, hence same low light performance. The same is happening here from the 12MP photo from the RX100 20MP sensor.

still not using the 1" sensor. its using 60% of it. That should be in the advertising. It also goes to how people expect to be able to crop in to the stills and videos. Any crop below 12 mps wont be very sharp I am guessing.

@@jamescohen done so to get that 20fps eye af and object tracking both in photography and videography. Also to use while 1", would need a big ass lens bump. I am fairly certain the 60% of that specific 1" Sony sensor coupled with inbuilt BIONZ X imaging chip, there is nothing out there that could compare to PRO I

Everything is not so rosy, only 60% of the area of this sensor will be used for filming. That is, we have a crop from 1 inch.

@@AlexKoro_CinematicTravel Exactly. It's pure marketing bullshit. The actual usable are of the sensor is the same size as the Pixel 6 for example, which kinda means nothing special these days. Dozens of phones these days have a 1/1.3" sensor.

The crop was a needed because in order to use all of the sensor, the lens would have to be a lot larger. Large enough to be a deal killer for most users. That isn't stopping most of the Sony YT partners from hyping the 1" sensor and failing to mention the crop. 🤐

@@andgainingspeed not really. Check out the Sharp Aquos R6. Full 20MP 1” sensor on a nice smartphone design and better aperture than PRO-I.

I'm really happy sony is taking this direction. In the 2005-2010 era you would see a lot of specialized phones that had a strong focus on one aspect. I had a sony ericsson k850i that had a great camera for the time, with a dedicated shutter button as well. To get this camera in a phone it had to be incredibly thick, even for the time, but that was something that didn't really matter to me. Too many big brand phones nowadays are focused on being all round phones, afraid to make sacrifices to some features (like weight and thickness) to improve others (like camera, battery size or audio quality). Lets hope more will follow!

AND the micro SD! Its one of the reasons I returned the Pixel 6. 256 gigs - your gallery, apps, whatever other crap gets depositied into your phone means not a lot of 4K filming. Sony allows for a 1 TB sd card that you can record 4K 120p directly on to. Which is really something if its really 4K. Although its only 12 MP so is it really? Anyway, great that it has a headphone jack and an SD card.

I’m bummed about the 12mp crop in the 1” sensor. However the 120 footage looked great. “Life is a Rent” slowmo B rolls looked out of focus. Not sure what happened there.

Yeah i was trying to figure out if that is some kind of art thing or its just a crappy camera. Lots of footage from this I have seen is very soft. But the woman pouring water is acceptable. Even good for a phone for sure. Lets hope he was being artistic and making it out of focus on the scene where she drags her finger through the water. Also colour are desaturated like its a very cloudy day. Good if natural.

Hi, what about the zoom? The variable lens from the Xperia 1 iii is not inside, so I think the only improvement is the 1" sensor and the new video pro app, but without a little bit of zoom the new sensor is useless if you want take a shot from not so close :(, it's a pity...

It doesn't just make phone calls, it can always play 4k cinema quality, has SD card and headphone jack plus gaming features, so it basically does everything a phone should do and more but at the highest quality. No gimmick computational photography BS that produces artificial images.

The only thing about this Sony phone is that they are not using all of the sensor, so it ends up being similar to other phones in terms of area. The (newest) iPhone probably has more lens flexibility although you'll have to go into 3rd party apps to get manual controls. Whereas Sony gives you all the manual stuff but lacks auto features.

It isn't the world's first 1" sensor, TWO other phones had it first, the Sharp and the Zeiss and this phone does not have a 1" sensor in reality as it only uses a 12 MP crop of a 20 MP 1" sensor. Which makes it not a 1" sensor. Its like having 7 cylinders work on a V12 engine. Calling it a V12 would get you sued or jailed for fraud.

@@tomas7158 Yes thank you I understand that. My objection is to the heavily misleading advertising that it has a 1" sensor. It should say that it has a sensor with 12 MP but much larger pixels than other phones because it uses 60% of a proper Sony sensor. I think this is probably worth it and better than any other phone as a camera and have one on order. GSM Arena has real photo and video samples that are properly illustrative of what this camera can do. So Im not against this phone, I am anxiously waiting for one. I just wish they wouldn't lie about the sensor size. It puts a lot of people off.
