- • iPod Classic new Batte...
I wanted to change my iPod's HDD to an SSD drive - but here is the deal: the iPod Classic uses those tiny 1.8 inch disk drives connected with a very particular flat-ribbon cable called “ZIF/CE” connector, which is not that common. I could only find small capacity ZIF SSDs… come on! My iPod had 160GB, I didn’t want to settle for less! Another option is a ZIF adapter to Compact Flash. The adapters are cheap, but a 256GB Compact Flash Card not so much… Then I found the iFlash board adapters for SD Cards - made by Tarkan Akdam
Tarkan Akdam? Who is this guy?
The iFlash website is full of information - but his personal blog has very few posts, no twitter account, no photos… So I wrote him an email: are you shy? in which country do you live? how have you started making iPod adapters?
And he wrote back, saying he is not shy, just a very busy and private person. He is an electronic engineer working with audio and TV productions, product design and development - even so, he keeps making newer iFlash models. It seems incredible! Would it be true? It could be a company, you know? There was a time I imagined Peter Norton could be just an actor! Anyway, I found a lot of iFlash reviews, the adapters are real and work!

Tudo jóia Edemir! Muito obrigado - e bem vindo ao canal! Seu inglês está bem legal. Por curiosidade, você comprou o iPod Classic usado? Ou um "novo" na caixa? Quanto custou?

Ha ha, you are totally right! The only problem is: for search purposes, I need to bet on the most commonly used terms - when people try to find something... and people search “how to replace iPod batteries” or screen or “iPod SD Card Update”. To give my videos a fighting chance, I get boringly descriptive and explicit on the titles... although “How to replace everything in your iPod” sounds way cooler 😎

Ha ha, well, the thing is: even with just 1TB, the only way for you to fill this space is using raw music (wav, uncompressed), because the iPod’s internal database has a limit of 50 thousand songs. But listening to uncompressed music, the battery would go faster as well... so I don’t see much sense in doing it 😊

Honestly.... best repair video I've seen on youtube. Extremely precise and informative, all actions were very clear, it was sped up a bit to be efficient but not so fast it misses details, all the "dead space" was removed (e.g., the part of the video where it's time to open the iPod, it's not 25 minutes watching someone do it in real time), and realistic expectations to let us know that we're not idiots and you're human too when we break stuff or can't get it cleanly apart. Well done. :)

Here I almost never buy movies anymore - it has more to do with the fact that we don’t watch the same movie again and again and again... different than music. I also don't like to be depended of a streaming service and I don't like the other Apple products like Iphone. The Ipod's are the best devices I own. Thanks to Steve.

I think this video is absolutely wonderful, and I am glad I took the time to watch it, even though I don't own an iPod classic and can likely not afford one either. That closing statement about remembering the day she gave it to you, and how you valued it because of the memories you have associated with it, is exactly what I love about refreshing and breathing new life into old tech. Amazing. :) I wish you many wonderful years of listening to music with your iPod.

Streaming is extremely convenient when you think of something you want to hear that you may not have ever been able to get you hands on a physical copy of (a lot of local rap music from the 90s and early 2000s fall in this box), but having your music stored locally on a computer, dedicated portable media player, or phone is just great for people like myself who still love the feeling of going out and buying physical media.

For me it's also kind of like this, but it's also the fact I don't have to depend on data/WiFi for streaming music and I don't have to worry about my phone's battery. Having the iPod is nice to have all your music in CD quality instead of having to sacrifice phone storage.

I think your video is the best one on KZbin about iPods. I was a collector, I had all sorts of iPod in any size and colour...I sold everything it was too much work. Right now I have a 3rd 40gb, 5.5 80gb, 7th 160 GB and a 4th shuffle. I want to modify the 5.5 changing it's battery, adding ssd, changing front and maybe add Bluetooth and also I want to restore the 7th. But believe me I never saw a guy starting a video changing battery, adding the iflash and then changing the Jack and the screen too in two separate moments....it was soooo funny. But I understand that your iPod it's a gift and it means a lot for you, I feel the same for mines they are gifts too. And also I totally agree with your idea about music, it's nostalgic but we come from a different era, we want to have "physically" our music with us not in some cloud among the sky. Espero que te vaya todo bien en España, un saludo y espero que el próximo video sea divertido cómo este :)

Hi noleftturnunstoned! Well, I am a very nostalgic person and I admit I tend to look the beginnings of anything as “golden Years”... I still have an Apple II 8 bit computer (in working conditions - I played loderunner, Mrs PAC-Man and Karateka last week). BUT, man, my iPhone 8 Pus is AWESOME!!! I just think we are fond to the simplicity of the beginnings (as a developer, I might say now it is far more complicated to make a good design that fits all the different screen sizes, than when we just had the iPhone). Nonetheless, I see constant evolution... (but would be great to still being able to upgrade disks, rams and CPUs ourselves)

I've never had one or at least not a new one. I've always had the other brand MP3 players but watching these videos is making me want an iPad or another MP3 play again because I liked having them for that specific purpose instead of a device that does a million things. Now if it could play music and videos and maybe surf the web occasionally then that would be nice.

The iPod could not surf the Web / it is completely offline. I used to listen to PodCasts on it - but you had to sync the iPod to your computer, that downloaded the recent podcast episodes from the shows you subscribed. I LOVED it! I still carry my whole music library on mine.

Hi Everson! I just did a battery and HDD replacement this past weekend inspired by your video. A few notes on my experiences: - I was able to get the isememo tool a while ago, and while I wasn't able to get it open in eight minutes like you were able in the follow up video, it took less time than you did with everything else. No damage or deformities to the casing. There was a lot of dirt and dust caked into the clips, so I used a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol to clean it up a bit. With the clips cleaned and opened already, I could probably open it back up in a couple minutes - I was always stubborn and refused to use iTunes to add or remove music from I iPod before, preferring Winamp, but I had a MacBook on hand which I used to restore. However, doing this made it unusable in Winamp. I thought I had made a serious error in restoring and took my SD cards out and reformatted them with a partition program recommended by the iflash website called AOMEI Partition Assistant. It turned out that using OS X to restore the iPod made it unusable with my windows PC and I had to install iTunes onto windows anyway and restore it again. It now works fine in Winamp again. - I was hoping to use the initial charge in my new battery from ifixit before charging as recommended in the packaging as a calibration, but I had to charge it up in order to add my music back onto the iPod. My old battery lasted around five days without being docked using it around 2.5 hrs a day, without using any docks or syncing. Hopefully this new one will last much longer, especially after this using the charge completely. I only bought my iPod in summer 2014, right before they stopped selling them, but I've used it nearly every day. Hopefully with this upgrade I can continue to use it for many more years!

Hey 👋! I am really happy that you could make the battery substitution in your iPod without much trouble - opening is really the tricky part 😕 Thank you for telling your experience in great detail! About battery life: my impression is that the batteries being sold now doesn’t have the same quality as the original iPod batteries from Apple had... Although, the one I bought more recently from iFixit has been better than the previous one I purchased on Amazon.

Indeed useful and entertaining video! When I opened my 7th gen iPod few years ago to replace the hard drive it took me hours of struggle and I promised I would never open it again. Mine is the "black" (actually it is a dark grey), I used automotive paint with a toothpick to mask the small dents in the paint and the result was very good. Also, before closing, I spent a lot of time bending the stainless steel borders inward to make sure the gap between front and back would stay as close and smooth as possible. The conversion to an SSD became cheaper and after seeing your video I cannot resist the temptation to open it again!

Hi George! You just made my day 🤗 Most people watch this video just as entertainment - and that’s fine. But it makes me so happy when someone actually wanted to revive their beloved iPod and succeed more easily than I did. In 2016 I wanted to make a tutorial called “How to make your iPod Classic new again - easily”. But, well, you saw it… I kept recording it just because… In my mind the tutorial wasn’t worth editing because this task is super risky and I ruined every step of it. The footage remained untouched on an external Hard Disk, until 2018. My wife insisted so much that I should show the journey, that it would be even more valuable BECAUSE of the mishaps. She was right and I am so glad I published it. Well my friend, enjoy your iPod - I still enjoy mine (although I have to “create” the occasions to do that… the phone is SO convenient, right?). Cheers from Madrid 🇪🇸

Geek Detour Wow, thanks for quick reply. ^^ I also keep iPad2. My wife was holing my 8month baby in front of apple store on the queue, wait for 6hrs to buy the day 1 iPad2 in Australia. It is dented at all corners, button is not responding as smooth as new. Luckily, apple still offer battery replacement service which actually replace to whole new housing as new condition. After many years gone, the ipad2 is absolutely slow but, actually no problem for my mailing, ebaying, netflix, youtube, quick browsing and photo. I decided to pay for the battery replacement service. Also, ordered apple genuine original smart cover for aud 15 only which showed on TV commercial with jony ive’s buttery voice. I’m so happy and excited to see refreshed my old iPad 2 with original smart cover soon which is more excited than weight lost iPad pro 3.
