*THANK YOU* Johannes for putting this one together. I have been trying to wrap my head around the I have a SonicWall that I'm trying to configure to make IPv6 work and I just didn't get the relationship of M&O in RA. I don't want my SonicWall to put the Global DNS in the RA - just the Global Prefix Delegation for my Windows network. This means I set up a DHCPv6 server and use it to apply options, like my internal DNS servers as recursive for my nodes. I have more reading to do, but you unlocked a fragment for me. So, thanks so much.

hi bro can you tell me does the icmpv6 request go over in the internet asking for information and take back the first one that responds or does it go to the local network router pls and thanks ?

this traffic is local only, and the hop limit has to be 255. router advertisements and neighbor discovery messages with a smaller hop limit are ignored.

SANS ISC this is what i don't get if non of the existing pcs ever got connected to a shcp server and never recieved this infos for exemple so the icmpv6 request will no give any results right ? if yes then what next ? also thanks for your answer

a client connecting to the network will first send a "router discovery" looking for routers. If no router answers, then the client can't get an IPv6 address. If a router answers, then there are two options: The router gives you a prefix (/64) and the host picks its own interface id (last 64 bits) . or, the router can tell the host to look for a DHCP server. But in many cases, you do not need DHCP with IPv6 as the router advertisement gives you the address, and in some cases the DNS server as well.

SANS ISC i still don't get it honnestly , ok so we have in ipv6 a local link address that is automatically associated using the mac address with the regulate fe80 so now we need to configure our global address so we need the information of out network provider that makes the first 48 bits of the mac to get them we will call for the router using icmpv6 but if the router himself never got connected so what's his global address if he have one ?and how will we configure our pc now ?
