What a phenomenal climax they built from the middle of the song and Peter Nicholls interpretation is, as usual, amazing both in the lower and quiet moments and in the heavy ones: when he sing "All the futures laid to waste" he gives goosebumps. IQ are one of the best progressive rock bands ever and in their long career (especially since 1993 with Peter Nicholls' comeback) never disappointed me.

iQ, Porcupine Tree, and Opeth are the three modern prog bands I keep coming back to. Maybe some Fish-era Marillion here and there (along with some Ozric Tentacles, whenever I wanna hear some exclusively instrumental stuff). I don't listen to Spock's Beard or the Flower Kings as much anymore (even though I'll always consider them to be big influences)...but I still regard them to both be a step up from Dream Theater. I still think that the first two Transatlantic albums represent the best work that's related to any of those three bands.

It makes me happy to see IQ get some exposure, they dont get the credit they deserve as they arent very well known in spite of being as amazing as they are. Glad that you loved it, what can I say, I don't recommend crap 😜. Yes, The Road of Bones is a concept album. The musicianship and production is faultless and the twists and turns constantly keep your attention throughout and the longer tracks certainly don't outstay their welcome. My next recommendation for your long list The Flower Kings - Truth Will Set You Free. Cheers Justin.

The journey began one obscure evening of late 86 when digging through the vinyls in an import store in Geneva, looking for something new that would fill the gap left by Genesis in those times. By sheer accident I picked a disc which showed drawings that immedialtly pleased me. A bit of disapointment rose in me while turning the sleeve and looking at the guys faces ! I thought "well this may be some kind of Alphaville or so..." But I regained hope while reading the guys gear, especially Martin's one. I finally bought it, came back home and then I heard the first few bars from Outer Limits which opens The Wake album, I fell in love forever. They never disapoint me in all the years since then !

Pretty cool that you had IQ on your list Without Walls - 19 minute epic from this album. You draw your own conclusions but to me it has a definite older Genesis style / feel to it , even using a Mellotron This release - 2014- was a breath of fresh air for old time prog lovers like me

IQ is one of my top bands of all-time, and really has a lot to offer. Often ignored/missed by others, sadly. From this album, "Without Walls" and "Until the End" are the real stand-outs, but the song I keep coming back to the most is "Constellations". In general, "Sacred Sound" from "Dark Matter" and "The Province of the King" from "Frequency" should not be missed, but there are so many more from this great band. I hope you continue to explore these guys, and Spock's Beard. The best is yet to come. To round out your "top 90s prog resurgence" bands, which also includes Spock's Beard, I'd highly recommend the band echolyn (yes, small e - that's how they do). The song "Some Memorial" from their second self-titled album will not disappoint, I suspect. It's a fine place to start, and they also have a lot to offer, especially if you appreciate a more overt jazz influence in the rock context. As always, your thoughtful insight on this music is much appreciated, JP!

I once had the pleasure to spend an hour or two talking to Peter one evening at a small party at his (then) girlfriend Jill's apartment in Blackburn in the late 80s. Nice bloke. IQ always had a very Genesis/Gabriel sound (whether by accident or intent) .. seems like they followed this path. This has a feeling and sound very much like "Signal to Noise" by PG ... nothing wrong with that !! Nicely crafted tune :)

Rest of the album definitely going to like it, there's musical variety, the lyrics are very good, even the bonus album has some very good songs that build up the story and feel of this album. I particularly like a section, later on the album (Until the End) where the main character is in a very different situation, and says: Will you stay until the end? When I'm down upon my knees, will you defend me then? And wreathe my form deep in your velvet arms one last time Before my heart sets you free Love this album, and have seen it live in London, they are an awesome band

This cracks me up a little because as I've been binging on your channel I thought "This man needs some IQ in his life!" They stand side by side with Genesis for me, and I know you are quickly becoming a big Genesis fan. So last night I started thinking about which IQ songs I should recommend to you, and "The Road of Bones" was high on that list. And then I wake up today and see this. So good job, community! A lot of people recommending their big epic pieces, and I don't disagree, but if you're looking for something maybe a little more bite sized, I think "Leap of Faith" is a great place to start. Note that on the album it transitions straight into the next song so it will seem to end abruptly, but the live version doesn't have that issue. Other standout tracks under 10 minutes: Guiding Light Capricorn Human Nature Nostalgia/Falling Apart at the Seams Frequency Thrilled that you're discovering my favorite band!

Agreed; Leap of Faith is definitely a big classic of theirs!! It's still prior to when their production began getting top-notch (like around Seven Stories into '98, and forward), but the production on Ever was still quite a step up from The Wake, or Tales from the Lush Attic. Part of me feels like starting people off with the same iQ I first heard (Forever Live, and Subterranea), but they've continued to excel so much since then. I was a bit worried when they released Frequency (cuz of the poppy tracks), but they've proven to have not lost their way as far as I'm concerned now. Their new album Resistance is unexpectedly turning out to be quite prophetic, as this current pandemic unfolds!! Similarly is the case with Tool's new record. 😲

It is almost a given that if you like Genesis you will like IQ. Not an overt copy of the Genesis style, but reminiscent of it, I think because of the strong melody and story telling. This is a great song on a great album but still not IQ at their best. In true progressive style they are not shy about writing long pieces and at 20 minutes ''The Narrow Margin'' is and epic track and the closer from perhaps their best album (double), Subterranea. However ''Harvest of Souls'' (24:29) from Dark Matter, which as one reviewer noted could be Supper's Ready part 2, is another contender for best album. A bit late to the party, I just ordered their latest album Resistance and have high hopes it will be another gem.

Cool, an IQ reaction, one of my all time fave bands. You are on point with regards to Peter Nicholls portrayal of the serial killer, it is perfectly acted, very cool and collected upto the point of the climax. IIRC he has a bit of a background in acting and that is quite clear when you see him live with IQ. He is acutely aware of what he can achieve on stage through his actions. He is one of the few frontmen I know who can stand perfectly still on a stage, not doing anything, not even singing and yet he can keep your attention. The way he performs this song is also quite unnerving. He has always employed stage theatrics throughout IQ’s career but never really over doing it unless when it is called for. One of their oldest songs is The Enemy Smacks and that one is a real tour de force for him and as such isn’t played that often. It is the portrayal of three different stages in the life of a drug addict incl. his death at the end. Very gripping stuff. They also wrote a double conceptalbum called Subterranea for which they also created a stage show (it is The Lamb of the 90s but not so tough to understand as that one) in which Peter was the main character during the whole concert. It is still one of my favourite live rock shows and I tried to see as much performances as possible at the time incl. the first 2 in the U.K. and the final two shows (in the Netherlands and the U.K.). And up to the last show they kept tinkering with the show both Peter’s performance as well as visual elements that changed almost every night.

Great suggestions on more IQ songs from other commentators. Here are some other ideas to explore: Sound of Contact - Dimensionaut album (Simon Collins (yes, Phil's son), Dave Kerzner and others). Very Genesis feel to it. Songs are generally short with the exception of "Mobius Slip" at 20 min. Dave Kerzner - New World. Get the 2 CD version. He has a mixture of Pink Floyd and Genesis. I'd love to see you review "Redemption". I'm a huge fan of a band called Galleon. They have really smooth transitions between sections. I'd suggest "Art Gallery", "The Price", or "Long Lonely Shadows". I'm not going to ask you to review their 52 minute song called "The Ocean". Speaking of Genesis -- although they no longer play live I would recommend seeing "The Musical Box" -- a tribute group. It is the next best thing to Genesis since they not only reproduce the sound, but also the costumes and production.

Thanks for playing IQ! I have liked this band for about 8 years, and their precursor band The Lens, which was totally instrumental. Great composing skills, as you noted. World class keyboardist Martin Orford left IQ and the music industry in large part due to file sharing and the devaluation of music, but their music hasn't suffered as I expected it would. I love Peter's voice, especially his diction. You can hear every word. My only complaint is their lyrics. A bit too self centred and dark for me. Steven Wilson does "melancholy" so much better. Every second word seems to be "I". That applies to much of their catalogue. You have to be in the mood for IQ. I have seen them twice and they are even better live. Tubular Bells. Please and thank you!

Never heard of this band before. Just went and listened to another of their songs "Until The End". Similar to this one (same album). My overall impression is they are very much like Dream Theater, maybe with a splash of Uriah Heep. The drone-like rhythms remind me of early Sabbath. Lead vocal is clean, and he uses this "sliding" technique that also reminds me of something from Dream Theater. All in all very well put together and not too busy for a first listen. I liked the song a lot, been wanting to get into IQ, so thanks for delving into it. Love the use of strings--and, yes, I pronounce "orchestral" the same as you. Unlike you, I wasn't really very fond of the vocals--not that they were bad or anything like that, it just lacked something to me, hard to put a finger on it. Maybe the vocal tone was a little too bright and head voicey for me. Otherwise it was great. The synthy xylophone run put me in mind of the Trevor Rabin eighties version of Yes.

While people can simply describe symphonic prog as not their own particular cup of tea, proggers not enamored of IQ generally cite the voice of Peter Nicholls' as what puts them off. It is certainly very distinctive and a bit unusual when compared to the average lead singer. I am not at all familiar with any of the technical terms that must be regularly utilized by those who teach the art of singing, so I cannot supply them here, and I must resort to many words where perhaps one might have done the trick. NIcholls' voice and overall abilities have greatly improved over the years. And why not? We expect a guitarist, or a bassist, or a drummer to improve his craft if allowed to practice it for decades, so why not a singer? I doubt that Nicholls' speaking voice sounds much like his singing voice. In his earlier efforts, you could hear him straining more than a bit to modify his tone to make it more distinctive, and it was regrettably a bit of hit or miss back then, especially in a failure to cleanly and precisely hit a desired note. But he has now pretty much perfected his instrument, which to me is a delightful development. He certainly does not project his voice from his chest and out through his mouth with the power of a trained opera tenor. The sound is a bit artificial as he routes things up through his nasal cavities, and I think what comes out of his mouth and nose actually has some natural harmonics within in, a touch of him almost singing in two closely related voices at once. I see in the comments posted already a goodly number of people who are not really comfortable with Nicholls' abilities or sound. I suppose singers are always a matter of personal taste. IQ is basically Nicholls and lead guitarist Mike Hughes' vehicle, with other band members seeming to come and go over the years. With prog's day in the sun having set long ago, it must be difficult to be in a prog band and also quit your day job. Hughes is a brilliant guitarist who is not truly unleashed in this song. His skills are worth noting and paying attention to when you, as you should, react to another of the many fine IQ songs. In doing so, you will be performing a public service of sorts, as many people have never heard of IQ, which is very much their loss, and one which needs to be remedied. I'd suggest "Guiding Light" kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipLRpGmuq7Vle5Y; (lost love lamented) or: "Seventh House": kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXSnn4SKjLZrgtU (might be the most powerful anti-war song ever composed. Have a box of tissue handy.) Both are stunning live performances. IQ is a great live band. You are going to fall completely for IQ, maybe even to go so far as to surrender the Tesseract for concert tickets some day.

Never heard them before but it all sounded right to me which is rare these days. I'll definitely be looking at more, thanks for highlighting them for me. Well, I looked and I'm shocked I didn't know them, saw a video of them playing at the Town and Country club in Camden in the mid eighties, I practically lived there at that time, sounded a lot like Genesis or even more like an old Marrilion. Yep, Peter has definetely improved since the 80s vocally. No one surrounding the band has ever confirmed it but I think somewhere between the Ever album and Subterranea he must have had some vocal lessons because there was a marked difference between the previous live performances and the ones on the Subterranea tour and beyond. Might also be due to the fact that from Subterranea onwards he began using in-ear monitoring.
@Cr8Tron
@Cr8Tron 4 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisEchoes Yeah, Nicholls definitely improved on Subterranea (even Ever was a big step up compared to prior). But I still can hear slight discrepancies on Subterranea, now whenever I revisit. Used to not notice...so, it's probably partly due to my ears having developed more and more from all the production I've been doing myself. I consider Seven Stories into '98 to be when they first nailed it...but when I listen to the new Resistance album, I'm amazed again by his vocal improvements. I didn't think there was any way possible to surpass his vocal delivery on TRoB!! 😮

Oh yeah, that was enjoyable. I'll have to do some more digging into this band/album. I loved the power and energy during the buildup to the crescendo and then the dropout. Great choice and reaction. By the way, was that a cello or synth in the intro? Just love that sound.

DukesRocks : Frequency and Province are two good songs by IQ. Also two good Spock’s Beard dvd concerts on YT...1999 with Neal Morse (fantastic 3 acoustic guitar set) and 2007 with their drummer as lead singer. Both excellent sound quality, both in Holland.

Thanks for trying this one Justin ;-) Glad you didn't fell asleep during the first minutes... it's a long intro, and quiet one.... but it's awesome! Yes it's a concept album about serial killer. If you like this I propose you to try more, every album since 1991 is wonderful. Subterranea is a favourite of mine, but all are really really good!

Long, long ago I was heavily 'into' IQ; in fact, I saw them live twice before they released anything. But I digress: I drifted away from the band after a few albums as my tastes changed a little and I never really reconnected with them until Road of Bones. Luckily I had an extensive back catalogue to enjoy!

Hi Justin. I knew you would like this song. IQ‘s music is mostly about melody, emotion and athmosphere. IQ is also one of the few bands that is getting better over the years with every release. Peter Nichols voice stayed unaltered since the early eighties😀. I can highly recommend every album from 1993 „EVER“ up to the latest one „RESISTANCE“. You should check the live version of The Road Of Bones on KZbin. Peter Nichols is such a pro😀. I love his mannerisms, he is not only a singer but also an interpreter of the songs. A joy to watch.👍

Another suggestion - Sacred Sound off Dark Matter. This shows another side of the band and particularly the genius of their former keyboards player Martin Orford. But there are dozens of worthy tracks I could recommend - Guiding Light, Leap of Faith, Widow's Peak and the epic the Narrow Margin. IQ are one of the very best bands around.

I have all their albums so I can't be objective. Love their music and the way they changed slightly during their career. Too bad I haven't been able to see them live yet. More IQ is a good thought in my opinion. The keyboards are a bit different these days after the original keyboard player Martin Orford has left but they're still great.

You are saying orchestral correctly. 😄😊 This is my first time hearing this band although I've been hearing about them for a while. For some reason I didn't catch on to the chilling subject matter and found the vocals to be cold and without anything particularly distinct about them . They may have been the point, eh? The opening atmosphere in its somewhat ambient approach reaching that big moment was very visual, very grey with little hints of subdued color, a sort if inner character study. But honestly it reminded me of an opening title song to a James Bond movie so I found it interesting yet derivative. At some point I'll have to listen to it again. My biggest shoulder-shrug about it is that the vocalist sounds like a lot of recent vocalists that can hit the notes, but have no particular distinguishment. Gabriel's Intruder has more of that peculiar delivery that you can really feel the time and the place. Now having said that!!! ~ listen to DAVID BOWIE''s RICOCHET. For some reason, not sure why, something about this song brought that song to mind, which I'd give an A. This song I'd give a B.

New to me. I’m a sucker for songs that have a slow build up so I enjoyed the song. My only gripe is I think there could have been more passion in the vocal delivery in the heavy part.

This is about a serial killer, so it's very, very dark. The vocals are from the murderer's point of view. He kills people and buries them along a road - the Road of Bones. He also revisits his victims. He explains why he does it - because he's a nobody who murders to become someone and to exert control over others. He laughs at the bungling of the Police trying to catch him. The basic album is brilliant, and you can get a double album where the bonus disc is even better than the main release. But it's not a concept album.

Happy to see an increase of the number of your subscribers.You deserve it amply and much more.It seems that every week,there is all kind of KZbin reviewers popping up all over the place with 10,20.000 subscribers.All you need ,to do (and no offence,just my personal observation) is having some charisma,smoke a joint,or drinking a bottle of scotch,a f...word every two words sentences,having little respect for music by interrupting it with unjustified free superficial sentences and a completely lack of productive and deep analysis of the content. So I just have shared the road to success.

Before I heard the song, I thought the Road of Bones referred to the Siberian road built in Stalin’s time. Estimates of millions of people died constructing this highway through Western Russia. Stalin and Mao were the world’s biggest serial killers. They made Hitler look like an amateur. I only hope their “records” will never be topped but they probably will be.

A good song, but the intro runs a tad long for me and the pay off is decently gothic. For me, they have better epics, “Narrow Margin” off of Subterranea, for instance. In fact, that album is their Lambs Lie Down on Broadway. Has that similar concept vibe. Give it a listen. Again, I like this song, don’t love it.
