I kind of think... that the dream Orchid wasn't just created by his yearning, but was actually being projected by the part of her primordial spirit that had attached herself to his. She's not just sad in this scene that he's leaving the illusion. She seems genuinely terrified by the prospect of being saved--like she knows she won't be herself if she comes back. If she was just an illusion projected by his own mind, I think she would be more hopeful, and like "I'll be waiting for you, come and save me" or something because that's what he would *want* her to say.

I like your theory but I know Orchid wouldn’t want DFQC to stay in the dream if it means him dying. If he stays, I think he would have perished. Also, it seems out of character for her to ask him - “Are you willing to see me marry another?” She’s very genuine and it’s more like DFQC to use this sort of reverse psychology. Just my thoughts.

Trapping himself in the dream because the moment he wakes up he cant overcome the unbearable truth of his beloved has died. Same as we had our ultimate heartbreaks. You always wish that you'll never wake up from your sleep. Because the moment you wake up, the reality hits hard. The pain is too much, you feel like your sinking and dying endlessly. You wish that with just one snap you can go back to sleep again because every second is unbearable. You're eyes are sore like you can't cry anymore but then it was replaced by an empty void in your heart. You're living but your techjically dead inside. The writer of this scene, know exactly what real heartbreak is. This is what I felt and I dont want to feel it again. Time heal everything, that's a lie.

hardest part of this scene is he had just watched her die in his arms, and he himself had to destroy her in his mind. experiencing loss in this way not once but twice was heartbreaking to watch.

I'm already in Episode 35 of this drama.. For me I think this particular scene is the saddest and most heart wrenching in the entire series!! At this moment he knew that if he saves her and bring her back, that she would end up getting married with Changheng.. But he would rather lose her as long as she's alive and safe.. DongFang Qingcang didn't even realized it himself but at this moment he sacrificed his own personal desire just for what's best for Orchid.. Such a magnificent character development, it's one of the reasons why I love this drama series..
