I know the drug runners use ir lights to drive accross the desert at night, they also use VERY QUIET mufflers you can only hear it when they start it up, after that aslong as they are under 1200 rpm you cant hear it. Had a chance to buy a drug runners 4 runner. Would have been nice. To have

I live in AZ and I never heard about drug runners equipped with IR & night vision. Do you have any more details? Have you seen this first hand or only seen the IR equipped 4 Runner?

@@jamesbeeker9802 It has been done for a long time... back around 2000 a Georgia State Trooper I knew told me about an incident with a smuggler out of florida. Was running a corvette with IR and nightvision. Driver ended up getting caught when he cracked up the vette.

Great for the military, great for hunting, just remember lights serve 2 functions 1 letting you see where your going, but also important 2 letting other drivers see you.

Advantage using 940nm is no red glow from the IR LED's, Advantage using the 850nm IR is quite a bit more visible using night vision. I use a Larson IR lightbar on my Ranger.

elkbow 940 is more than enough light with good third gen. with lesser digital and such nv the 850 may be needed.

Lone Star Boars True, depends how far you want to cast lights. I'm using the Larson 20 LED spot beam, can see a long ways, yet has pretty good flood. I like the idea of not accidentally running in to hogs because not enough light or throw looking through my pinnacle tubed PVS-14.

Like what was mentioned in the video, the main advantage to 940nm over 850nm is the complete lack of visible light(red/purple light) for any human or animal to see and be alarmed. Hands down the 850nm will throw more IR light, but the light source will be seen. To illuminate with a 940nm light to the level of a standard 850nm it takes 2-2.5 times more power for a flood and easily 5x more power for a 940nm spot to equal the 850nm spot, but with the 940nm you can typically get closer because you won’t be seen as long as you can be quiet enough.

I don't really understand the need for these if you have Gen3 already, even good legit Gen2. You can already see well enough to drive without lights at all, and that is better, because anyone else with NVGs will be able to see your truck from literally miles away if they have LOS.

Actually planning to get these for my midnight racing down highways. Where I live, the only source of light is from the front of your car. So I like knowing that if I got into a police chase, I can turn off all lights and turn this thing on and keep goin

One issue is others can't see you either, so if you're doing 100 and someone or something pulls out in front of you, your done. Lol. If you're in an area with sophisticated police depts, they have FLIR and other night equipment so it prob wouldn't be as easy as you're thinking. I'm retired police, but I'll tell you how it works. I don't care if you go 120 down the road, but I see issues with your idea. I'm also thinking that since you would be relying on a monitor to see, it's unnatural and you may not be able to react like you would with natural vision. At high speeds that could create an issue. My military friends tell me that night vision with 30k dollar goggles is impressive, but they have limited peripheral vision which makes driving difficult at even low speeds, so if they have issues with that kind of tech, you might be pushing your luck with a $1000 commercial system. Have fun but try not to die and really try not to kill others. I hear prison really sucks. Lol

Fog for night vision is just like fog for regular headlights. Need thermal to see through fog.

Things may have changed since this video was made or he may have just misspoke when he said the 10" was a spot. Ultimate Night Vision currently has a 10" spot/flood combo @$330 while the cubes are floods @$200

Yeah I mean you technically could, but you will still get caught, you also have to remember that the police use FLIR thermal cameras as well. Which means that they will be able to pick up the heat signatures from YOU, and most definitely the vehicle that you would be driving, and FLIR cameras can see through the trees or whatever else you would be hiding in. Whatever you're trying to plan up I wouldn't even bother.

Do you have some kind of light kill switch for your Lexus? Due to the rough terrain that I hunt, I tend to use my brakes in a lot of down hill situations.Trying to come up with something that will kill my brake lights to make this method more effective while hog hunting at night.

You can use regular incandescent bulbs with red and blue theatrical plastic filters. There are 12v ir led spotlights made for use with security cameras to give them extra light. I don't know if those are nominally 12v where they will tolerate 14v from a car though.

+Michael Neumeyer yes depending on your night vision. If you are using digital or a low end I2 tube you will need it on dark nights. I just use then for driving if it get under tree cover I have thermal to look out the sides.

Dude you say pvs14 and I have 1 a 3rd gen pinnacle autogated thinfilmed Harris unit and I see fine in very dark conditions. I live in louisiana. 30 minute drive and you are in the swamp. It's dark as hell there and my 14 seems brighter than what your vid showed. PS driving with a monocular is very dangerous as you lose depth perception.

Why did the navy SEALS that just had that raid where they lost a man wait for a new moon if you still need some moon or stars to use the NODs? Looks like in this video they'd need IR illuminators and that wouldn't be passive?

They usually have a filter on them. However you can still see the IR even with the filter on. Try it on your remote control and phone camera. ;)
