I knew Sean well. A deeply complicated and haunted man. A lot of people were pulled in by his bull in later years, but I refused to forget that he was essentially a killer. With Sean, it was also very hard to figure out where the lies ended and the truth began- an exceptionally intelligent but very fragile man who deliberately manipulated people in order to hide areas of his private life. Nothing was ever straightforward with him. The problem is that he was a masterful actor and a charismatic speaker, so it was easy to be drawn into the myths he’d concocted. I suspect he was somewhere on the psychopathic spectrum. The only thing I can say with any certainty is that he seemed to genuinely love his children, or was at least genuinely proud of them. Above all, the lasting impression I have of Sean is that the decisions he made in life (murder and betrayal) had isolated him to such a degree that he never trusted anyone ever again. Even those friends who thought they mattered to him would later be betrayed by him...he couldn’t help it; he seemed to regard truth as a pliable substance. In a word, the loneliest man I ever knew. But still a charming sod none the less.

The man is self pitying. So after he is involved in the death of a young female soldier and didn't like it he still continued his involvement in the IRA. There's not much principle there. It's easy to have a very aloof attitude to killing when you've never had to do it yourself. Had you killed a living creature before you'd realise the significance of death and how terrible it is. The fact that he doesn't rejoice in the death of his opponents actually makes him more human, it doesn't make him a 'bed wetter.' Only a child would think like that.
