The execution of Sharmeh is a message to the international community. The Islamic Republic is concerned that individuals like Sharmeh, due to their influence or potential popularity among some opposition groups, could become symbols or leaders for anti-government movements, and it views his execution as a preventative measure. Jamshid Sharmeh was abducted from the United Arab Emirates in 2020 and held German citizenship. Neither the UAE nor Germany has had a serious or transparent response to this issue. Iranians are sitting around expecting outsiders to come and free them.
