The Iranian military launched a significant attack on Israel on April 13th, 2024, using approximately 300 drones and missiles from Tehran. This marked the first direct assault by Iran on Israel. The attack was allegedly in retaliation for an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1st, which resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals, including high-ranking IRGC members.
Although Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in the Damascus airstrike, the consequences were severe. The Iranian attack triggered air raid sirens across Israel at 1:42 am on April 14th, causing widespread panic and disruption. Israeli defense forces managed to intercept the majority of the incoming drones and missiles, preventing them from entering Israeli airspace. However, some missiles evaded interception, striking the Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel and causing slight damage.
Despite the successful interception, a 7-year-old girl from a Bedouin town near Arad was critically injured by shrapnel from an intercepted Iranian ballistic missile. She was rushed to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba for treatment.
In response to the attack, Israel shut down its airspace, leading to numerous flight cancellations, and implemented restrictions on gatherings and educational activities. Additionally, the US military reportedly intercepted attack drones heading towards Israel before the Iranian assault.
International reactions to the escalating tensions have been swift. Britain pledged support to Israel by deploying Royal Air Force jets to intercept any airborne threats within range, aiming to de-escalate the situation. President Biden reaffirmed the United States' unwavering commitment to Israel's defense.
Meanwhile, Iran's Defense Minister issued a warning, threatening a firm response to any country aiding Israeli attacks on Iran. In a concerning development, the Iranian Navy captured a cargo ship, the MSC Aries, owned by an Israeli billionaire and flying a Portuguese flag near the Strait of Hormuz. Seventeen Indian crew members aboard the vessel are now under Iranian control, prompting diplomatic efforts by India to secure their safe return.
As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to mount, the international community braces for potential escalation and takes preventive measures to mitigate the risk of further conflict.
