I remember the cause for the invasion by the US. Iraq sold a quarter of its oil to Russia, kept a quarter as its reserves, sold a quarter to the EU. and a quarter was bid on by various international oil companies. The winner was Total-Elf, and not Exxon that the US supported. So the invasion went ahead because the Americans weren't included in any of the deals. A rational use of the billions spent on US "defense", becoming offense when it suits them.

Plus the Iraqi government had concluded contracts with the Chinese to up grade the oilfields, this pissed America off.
