The Barguzinsky Reserve was created on January 11, 1917 to preserve the sable population and was called the Barguzinsky Sable Reserve. At the time of its foundation, there were no more than 30 sables in the reserve. At this time, the Barguzinsky Reserve is complex and is called "Barguzinsky State Natural Biosphere Reserve". The number of sables has increased significantly, and now there are about 2 individuals of this animal per 1 square kilometer of the reserve. The territory of the Barguzinsky reserve covers more than 374 thousand hectares. Of these, 15 thousand belong to the waters of the famous Lake Baikal. The reserve is located on the surface of the Barguzinsky ridge and has many rivers, lakes, bays, capes on its territory. The most famous lakes on the territory of the Barguzinsky reserve are Losinoe and Karasevoe lakes. However, the greatest attention and admiration is drawn to Lake Baikal, part of which is the territory of the reserve. The flora of the Barguzinsky State Reserve, as well as Lake Baikal, is characterized by unique and beautiful plant species. The territory of the reserve is covered with deciduous forests, meadows, marshlands, as well as taiga forests. Here you can find such types of trees as cedar, spruce, pine, larch, fir, cedar elfin. There are also many shrubs, vascular plants, fungi, lichens, mosses. In the protected area, you can find the most beautiful phenomenon in the world - lotus bloom. Many plant species found on the territory of the Barguzinsky Reserve are very rare and endangered, therefore they are listed in the Red Book. Part of the mountainous area of the reserve is not covered with vegetation and has a stone surface. The animals in the reserve are mainly forest, but there are also many species that live in mountainous and coastal areas. The reserve is home to a huge population of sables, squirrels, chipmunks, forest mice, weasels, hares, and wolverines. Among the large mammals living in the Barguzinsky State Reserve, one can distinguish red deer, wolves, foxes, and brown bears. A variety of birds contribute to the diversity of the wildlife of the reserve. Of these, there are two species listed in the Red Book - the white-tailed eagle and the black stork. Numerous lakes and rivers of the Barguzinsky reserve also contribute to the fauna of the reserve and add many species of fish to the list of animals. The most valuable of them are omul, lenok, whitefish, taimen. The most common are pike, perch, burbot, Siberian grayling.
