Ireland in the era of the Hundred Years' War never really gets covered the way it should, to start with "Maurice the Great", who was a Norman Knight, had led a rebellion against the Crown for what many believed was to become King of Ireland, entering in to Hundred years of love, war and violence in to history darkest chapter.

This is the first I've heard of Maurice Fitzgerald. Was he "more Irish than the Irish themselves" at this point? Was he speaking Irish, dressing Gaelic etc? Great work and video, as always!
@IrishMedievalHistory

It's hard to tell as he was still going between Dublin and west Munster. However his kids, even more so the 3rd Earl, poet Fitzgerald was very Irish and is where the saying comes from.

@@IrishMedievalHistory I’ve always took that dreadful phrase of " being more Irish than the Irish themselves " to be actually an insult from their overlords back in England .

@@richie1593 is it?? overlords is a funny word from 1300 given that they where not really paying tax, they where following there own laws and had there own private armies.

@@IrishMedievalHistory these people were no more Irish in 1300 than they were in 1169 , they weren’t paying taxes because they stopped paying them and the private armies they had were in place against the native Gaels , these were still loyal subjects of the crown as the were for centuries to come , if we need any proof of that look at the fact they never weighed in behind O'Neill during the 9 years war !

@@richie1593 and yet there was many Gaelic that fought with the Fitzgerald's from 1300's. Do you believe that the South and east of Ireland is not Irish?? The Nine years war was very late in the Tudor conquest. When most of the families that I talk about there main male airs had been wiped out and puppet family members had taken over and most of there lands taken and given to English with English over lands. from your view what is it to be Irish?? It's just very funny to say that the Desmond Fitzgerald's where not Irish, even more so Gearóid Iarla the Poet 3rd Earl of Desmond. Like the Statutes of Kilkenny 1366 is made just for the Desmond Fitzgerald's.

Very interesting. I'm slowly getting my head around this time period. On a technical note, some of the music is a bit loud. Maybe bring it down 20-30% and some of the transitions are a bit abrupt. I'd also like an episode on a session of parliament, the procedures to be a member, the type of laws passed. Any differences between it during the Lordship vs the Kingdom.Why was it first established, did it move to Dublin during the mediaeval period and if so why?

I know from reading about the history of my own family name that the Walsh's spent a lot of time fighting with the O'Byrne's and O' Toole's. Did the Normans/plantagenets even speak English in Ireland during this period or did they only speak French?

That's down to which families your talking about. You have the first wave of Normans that's spoke French and Walsh and ended up more Irish then the Irish themselves and then the second wave that spoke French and English and ended up living between the English and Irish world.

I think you've confused Elizabeth Butler with Eleanor de Bohun who, as an English girl married into an Irish family, would have every reason to want to cause trouble.
@IrishMedievalHistory
@IrishMedievalHistory 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't find anywhere that Eleanor de Bohun married in to any Irish family. The fighting between the Butlers and The Fitzgerald's, was over Butler land that Maurice Fitzgerald was looking to take by force. Although this was a private war, Elizabeth Butler was able to get the King of England to declare war on Fitzgerald when she was able to find proof that he was looking to become king of Ireland against the King of England.

I still need the DNA tests to confirm my line but the mysteries would appear to have revealed to me a few things on this exact matter. May i just say from one studiest to another that english compilement of older languages had them changing a few things ;) you gave me a missing piece with the separation of the churches & so i'll give you some clarity on things that might not add up properly especially concerning the o'briens of which i am also a descendant incase the bias argument comes forth.
