Ireland’s affinity with Palestine amidst Israel's war on Gaza | The Listening Post

The one country in Europe that hasn’t lined up behind Israel is Ireland.
Its government has used words like 'disproportionate' to describe Israel’s bombing of Gaza - terms like 'collective punishment'.
Back in 1980, Ireland became the first EU government to call for Palestinian statehood. There is an affinity with Palestinians that is rooted in a shared history of colonialism, occupation and division under British rule.
Ireland’s political consensus on Palestine is, for the most part, reflected in its media. News outlets have provided the kind of journalism that, while hardly radical, cannot be found almost anywhere else in Europe; giving space to both Israelis and Palestinians.

I'm Irish, and just to be clear - there are plenty of us in Ireland who thoroughly know and understand the history of Palestine and its people, and many of us absolutely are calling for a complete dismantling of the Israeli regime (what Zionists would hysterically refer to as the end of Israel) in favour of a one-state secular democracy. And if it were up to me, every settler in the West Bank who was not born in Israel would be sent back to their home countries (after serving significant prison time for their criminal participation in ethnic cleansing). As an Irish person I’m not too proud. When we had our own uprising in 1916 the majority of people were upset at the fighting for the destruction and death, but I’m conflicted as I grew up with a Bobby sands jersey, hunger strikers framed anniversary and with a proclamation poster in a few places round the house and have always felt absolutely outraged at his and the other hunger strikers’ deaths. I also read a poem years ago that I’m going to ruin now, but the last line was something like “what worth is our freedom at the cost of a five year old girls fingers” (blown off by a car bomb for reference) The sad fact is nothing can be achieved until both sides go by peace. What southern Irish person would want to harm a loyalist child for peace? And I hope it’s the same the other way.

The Irish have always stood in solidarity with occupied and oppressed people because of their own experiences with occupation and oppression. They even supported the struggle of the Jewish inhabitants of Mandate Palestine in their fight against the British imperialists, along with the Arabs who resisted British rule. Actually, the EU wanted to cut aid to Palestine after Oct 7th. Ireland fought hard against it (they were a lone voice) and at the end of the meeting the EU tripled its aid to Palestine... It's not much I agree but we are trying.
