I was working as a landscaper between jobs this summer and rescued a few young oak saplings that my ex colleague was going to pull up out of a flower bed. I took them home in coffee cups and am planning on planting them in the local area in a few years. I found this video looking for some info on our local species and now I'm really excited to see the rest of the videos in the series

Thank you for making these videos. Well done. We've sowed almost 50 trees over the years , oak among them, in our garden because I'd grown up with a love of trees from my parents.

Excellent video, great information. I've grown and planted many of these beautiful trees. I would really like to replant these ancient forests. There's nothing stopping a few thousand of us collectively planting massive forests again in Ireland. With govt funding I'd spearhead it without hesitation. Mr Beast accomplished similar in the US.

Nothing stopping? The Irish government doesn't care about native trees or nature, they care about profit from Sitka spruce that offers nothing for nature. Ireland is devoid of trees and our land is supposed to be an Atlantic rain forest. These forests will never return. You look at Donegal and it's mostly just bog land with no wildlife. Even the golden eagles struggle for food. Donegal was once covered in thick birch forest and oak, sadly humanity is the cause of its disappearance

Thanks for this. I think a great deal of the info is also good for Scotland. Glad the jays got a mention. They recently appeared in my neighbourhood, and I've noticed more oak seedlings appearing. I think magpies do a bit of acorn caching too, as there are suddenly a dozen wee oaks in my brothers lawn (no squirrels or jays, but a recent influx of magpies).

What can we do to bring these trees back? Are there many schemes in Ireland to take part in?

Your joking right? The government only plants foreign trees for profit, trees that make the area look like a green desert, a desert that is devoid of any wildlife what so ever

It's not that devastating if you consider that human hands can be regenerative as well. Imagine selling land to families if they promised to maintain a hedge of native trees. Then imagine those people move away or abandon the property. THat native hedge will turn into a forest that will grow into the now abandoned field... giving wood to the next settlers and a good hedge.

Ivy doesn't actually harm the tree, it's only its weight that could damage a very fragile tree

Deer are the issue, to stop speed from damaging a tree all you need is a 3 foot tree guard and to plant the trees when they are big enough. Sheep farms are actually perfect for planting trees
