In this video, we'll provide a full summary of Irenaeus' books of Against Heresies (alternatively called by its Latin title, Adversus Haereses).
Excerpt:
In AD 178, when Irenæus was appointed by the Christians in Lyons to be their church's bishop (or overseer), he had at least three enormous tasks in front of him.
Many families in his congregation were grieving the losses of nearly fifty martyrs from the previous year.
The Gospel needed to be spread into the region surrounding Lyons, where people were polytheists or atheists, or the Christians needed their local churches to be organized.
There were discussions and disagreements between Eastern and Western Christians regarding how to respond to heretical groups claiming to be Christians, who were seeking to gain converts away from the universal church.

@@freethinker79 God didn’t bring evil into existence. It’s the result of sin and our fallen world. God, however, does bring instances of calamity on people. In fact, it’s his prerogative to do so. Even in these cases, though, it is good for him to render judgment on guilty people. Though we might subjectively not like the calamity we face

Sarah? Highly doubtful) Also there is no reference in the Old Testament that calls Sarah "the mother of us all." The only person who comes close to that description is Eve. "And Adam called the name of his wife Eve: because she was the mother of all the living." - Genesis 4:6 In the New Testament, Mary is the new Eve (being the mother of our Lord as the verses in Luke clearly prove) and Jesus is the new Adam. As far as Peter's authority goes, Jesus said I will give the keys to Peter (referring to after His Resurrection). "And I say to thee: THAT THOU ART PETER AND UPON THIS ROCK I WILL BUILD MY CHURCH, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven. Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ." - Matthew 16:18-20 "When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: FEED MY LAMBS. He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: FEED MY LAMBS. He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: FEED MY SHEEP." - John 21:15-17 Yes, Scripture does give evidence that Peter was married, but the key point is Jesus gave him the authority AFTER His resurrection. Also keep in mind (as the New Testament proves), that Jesus gave the authority to the Church, which He Himself will build (and thus, give Peter the authority to lead). Pope Leo the Great (fifth century) wrote to Bishop Rusticus of Narbonne: "The law of continence is the same for the ministers of the altar, for the bishops and for the priests; when they were (still) lay people or lectors, they could freely take a wife and beget children. But once they have reached the ranks mentioned above, what had been permitted is no longer so." The Spanish Council of Elvira (305): "We decree that all bishops, priests and deacons in the service of the ministry are entirely forbidden to have conjugal relations with their wives and to beget children; should anyone do so, let him be excluded from the honour of the clergy." First Council of Aries (315): "Moreover, (concerned with) what is worthy, pure, and honest, we exhort our brothers (in the episcopate) to make sure that priests and deacons have no (sexual) relations with their wives, since they are serving the ministry every day. Whoever will act against this decision, will be deposed from the honour of the clergy." You might argue that this came AFTER the Gospels, but keep this passage in mind (regarding the aforementioned statement regarding the authority of the Church): "And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. And if he will not hear them: TELL THE CHURCH. And if HE WILL NOT HEAR THE CHURCH, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican." - Matthew 18:16-17 Jesus is giving authority to the Church (just like he did with Peter by giving him the keys to lead the Church). Therefore, if the Church gives authority, then we must abide by it since it IS Christ's Church. As the passage states, "if he will not hear the Church, let him be to thee as the heathen and the publican." The Apostles' Creed is NOT a prayer to the Apostles. Such an argument is false and completely fictitious. Let's get back to Peter. Jesus specifically talks about protecting Peter (not the other Apostles) from Satan. “And the Lord said: ‘Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren.’” - Luke 22:31-32 St. Peter’s name is mentioned more than 190 times in the New Testament. St. John is mentioned 29 times. The names of the other 11 apostles are only mentioned 130 times. Peter’s name is mentioned 56 times in Acts’ chapters 1-15. Peter leads the Church in replacing Judas in Acts’ chapter 1. He spoke for the Church at Pentecost in Acts’ chapter 2. Peter worked the first miraculous healing in post- Ascension Church history in Acts’ chapter 3. Peter answered for the Church before the council of the high priest in Acts’ chapter 4. Peter metes out the discipline to Ananias and Sapphira in Acts’ chapter 5. In Acts’ chapter 10, the first gentile convert is specifically told to find Peter. “And the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother …” - Matthew 10:2 “Now when they had heard these things, they had compunction in their heart, and said to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles: ‘What shall we do, men and brethren?’” - Acts 2:37 “But Peter and the apostles answering, said: ‘We ought to obey God, rather than men.’” - Acts 5:29 “And Simon, and they that were with him, followed after him.” - Mark 1:36 “But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep. And waking, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.” - Luke 9:32 “But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee; there you shall see him, as he told you.” - Mark 16:7 Here are some OT/NT parallels that clearly link King David and St. Peter: “And the king rising up, and standing said: ‘Hear me, my brethren and my people: I had a thought to have built a house, in which the ark of the Lord, and the footstool of our God might rest: and I prepared all things for the building.’” - 1 Paralipomenon (Chronicles) 28:2 “And when there had been much disputing, Peter, rising up, said to them: Men, brethren, you know, that in former days God made choice among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.” - Acts 15:7 “But the Lord God of Israel chose me of all the house of my father, to be king over Israel for ever: for of Juda he chose the princes: and of the house of Juda, my father's house: and among the sons of my father, it pleased him to choose me king over all Israel.” - 1 Paralipomenon 28:4 “And when there had been much disputing, Peter, rising up, said to them: ‘Men, brethren, you know, that in former days God made choice among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.’” - Acts 15:7 Just as the office of King David had successors, the office of St. Peter does as well. “And king David said to all the assembly: ‘Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is as yet young and tender: and the work is great, for a house is prepared not for man, but for God.’” - 1 Paralipomenon 29:1 “And all the multitude held their peace; and they heard Barnabas and Paul telling what great signs and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.” - Acts 15:12 In the Book of Isaiah, we learn that David had a royal cabinet. However, in his royal cabinet, there was one prime minister. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliacim the son of Helcias, and I will clothe him with thy robe, and will strengthen him with thy girdle, and will give thy power into his hand: and he shall be as a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Juda. And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder: and he shall open, and none shall shut: and he shall shut, and none shall open. And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father. And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, divers kinds of vessels, every little vessel, from the vessels of cups even to every instrument of music. In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the peg be removed, that was fastened in the sure place: and it shall be broken and shall fall: and that which hung thereon, shall perish, because the Lord hath spoken it.” - Isaiah 22:20-25

His name was changed from Abram to Abraham. “Give ear to me, you that follow that which is just, and you that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence you are hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you are dug out. Look unto Abraham your father, and to Sara that bore you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and multiplied him.” - Isaiah 51:1-2 As the above passage indicates, Abraham, the father of the nations and the multitude, is also called rock. In the New Testament, Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter. He changes his name (petros) that is close to rock. Sadly, so many people badly misinterpret Scripture because they have to stick to their false "narrative." In other words, Jesus may have said he gave the keys to Peter, but that doesn't prove the papacy. In their deluded minds, the Bible has to explicitly say: "Peter, you are going to be the first Pope!" to prove the papacy. Think about this for a moment: Is the phrase "Holy Trinity" used in the New Testament? No. However, Catholics and even Protestants believe in the Trinity even though the NT specifically doesn't mention the word "Trinity." Non-Catholics can comprehend the legitimacy of the Trinity, but when the exact same thing applies to Peter being given jurisdiction to lead Christ's Church, they want to pretend that this particular passage is a completely different issue and that the same interpretations they use to acknowledge the Trinity are now completely foreign since they refuse to accept Catholic teaching. "Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit." - Matthew 15:14

Ignorance is bliss until reality steps in. It's sad that people still fall captive to popular belief instead of what is taught through the Spirit. The disciples were taught by Jesus in the flesh. It's their teachings that is referred to as Gnostic. Truth, Knowledge, and Understanding IS NOT what coincided with blinded perception for personal stature and wealthy gain. I wonder how much of what Irenaeus said still holds up today. Having read some of the early Christian apologists (Justin Martyr, Minucius Felix, Athenagoras, etc.) I find them less than convincing. They rely on ideas and "proofs" that, in modern times, I doubt would be taken seriously, even by other Christian apologists.

yeah, I've read a little, and a considerable amount of their arguments are based on the appeal to tradition of the apostles as the proof of their own perceived orthodoxy, but it seems much of the gnostic texts could well also be reflective just as much of what the apostles actually thought, who can know now?

In Valentenianism, the Demiurge is not evil and has created the physical world upon being instructed by the Pleroma itself. 4:30 the Ebionites were not Gnostics but Christians of a particular Jewish inclination. There were teachers who adapted both teachings though, as was the case of Cerinthus. 4:36 Marcion never claimed the possession or the capacity to impart a secret knowledge "Gnosis" and is thus not technically a Gnostic even though he was obviously a dualist. 5:07: The Gnostics were not polytheists. The Aeons are emanations of a single spiritual source. The Aeons don't make the Gnostics polytheists just like the doctrine of the trinity doesn't make mainstream Christians polytheists. 5:20 The Gnostics used apophatic theology to refer to the "Greatest Aeon" and consequently this being can't be described as Good or Evil or even "existent" as per some teachers like Basilides 5:59: the number 30 is relevant to Valentinianism, where as you've placed the figure of Abraxas which is Basilidian and is associated with the number 365. A basic mistake that reveals how poor your knowledge of Gnosticism happens to be. 8:05 Funny you as a Copt say that when there is a significant number of (secular) scholars who believe Egyptian Christianity was initially Gnostic! Gnostic were around long time before the roman Catholic Church got thar hands on the many book that were written from many other Christian group. Which the church destroyed later in on history. So am glad that many gnostic groups have survived. They are like the mystic christen as the Jews have mystic Jews. My question is what if something is right that been called it heresy. It’s heresy cus if we’re all inherently good then God (Jesus) ultimately wasted the time and emotions of humanity by becoming human and dying on a cross. If we’re all good what do we need atoning for? Many people say that Jesus taught good teachings and He did, but if you treat Him as some teacher among many you will see He’s not that special. But if you treat Him as He is (God in Human flesh) you will see that His servitude and dying on a cross for humanity’s sin is beautiful and paramount to any teacher born from a mother. This idea was borrowed from certain Greek philosophers. The problem with Irenaeus is that he was over zealous to attack the Gnostics and put them all in the same barrel... He refuted the Acts of Peter which is the only written scripture that proves the Peter was crucified upsidown. Also "Gnostics" were never a group modern scholars have put all these people in the same bin as Valantanius and Bassilies.

Irenaeus wrote against the Trinity that was taught by Cerinthian. It was in it's early form way back then and is much more evil today. He also testified that the apostle John wrote his gospel and letters in direct opposition to the teachings of Cerinthian and his fake god man Jesus. Yet trinitarians today use John's writings to support their fake Jesus'. What blasphemy! Get your history right and stop spreading lies.

Gnostics are quite foolish. Most of them hate life for what it is, only care about themselves, and believe knowledge and wisdom alone is the only key for salvation, when in reality there's more than just that. There's also the actions one makes to back up those, which is why knowledge and wisdom alone isn't enough. In the end, they're just pretentious nutcases who were branded as heretics for a VERY good reason.
