About a year and a half ago I moved to an apartment with “city water” which I wasn’t used to drinking...after carrying gallons and gallons of h2 o from the store I decided to buy a Berkey and I’m so happy I did...it sits on the counter making it easy to fill from the extendable faucet hose...I’m a big fan of berkey!

Great vid ! We’ve been using a Berkey for many years. We are on a well and our water has a lot of rust in it so we have to clean our filters about every 6 weeks because they get clogged up with rust. It’s worth the hassle. We also have a water softener in our system and Berkey does not recommend using water softened water so we only use water directly from the well (before it gets to the softener) to filter for drinking.

We replaced the RV "flip up" sink in our Interstate with a much deeper residential style sink specifically to carry our Berkey in the sink. We brace it with a couple of refrigerator bars. Works great. Btw, make sure you do the "red dye test" every so often. We have found that the filters occasionally fail, perhaps from the regular vibration.

Love our Big Berkey at home. We have the GO Berkey for when we go in our RV. Before leaving home, we fill up 2 steel water containers from our Big, and make some ice also. Those all go in the RV before leaving. Once at our campsite, we prime the GO Berkey and get it filtering. It is small, but we are always replacing the used water back into our canisters. Works for us! Hint, to make it drip faster, cut a plastic straw about 1/2 to 1/4 inch off the end and slit down the side, then put it in between your 2 Berkey containers. Try it. 🙂

Great video!! We got our Big Berkey because we spend a lot of time in Arizona where they have arsenic in the water! We are currently in a park where each site has a reverse osmosis system because the water is so bad. Besides the black filters you can get the white arsenic filters and use them for extra protection. Thanks for the video.

I would put the berkey in the sink. For travelling you could put the berkey inside the other for storage if not in use then put it in the sink. One bit fits inside the other.

Glad to see you guys use the Berkey too! We opted for the metal spout for ours to add a little more durability to the system. The deal breaker for us was seeing a KZbinr offer their dog water from two separate sources in identical bowls. Dog smelled both bowls and went for the Berkey filtered water bowl. Too, the company recommends not letting the filters stay dry for more than (I think) 24 hours. Due to its size, this is never a problem with the travel size.

I think if you ck the max capacity on the travel model it's like 15 gals per day if you keep it topped off and continually drain it. We've used one for 3 yrs now and would never go back to any other system.We never use soap to clean it we only use warm water and white vinegar. We actually put a small hook in the wall of the van by the sink and tie it down with bungee cords. Works great and we never forget to secure it.

We purchased the "Big Berkey" 2.25 gallon model which we use for all of our drinking and cooking water at home. It proved to be a bit big for the camper so we purchased a "Travel Berkey" 1.5 gallon model to carry with us. In addition, we purchased a couple of filter bags (Lot of 2 x 1 Micron 7"x16" Singed Polyester Felt Filter Bag PESP1S Size 1) to pre-filter silt, algae, etc. should we ever need to use water from a lake, creek or river...figured that it could help keep from gumming up the Berkey filters.

Hi Chris and Aaron! This is a really great video! As you said, water is so important, both for daily life and activities, as well as enduring health. I certainly don't practice that mantra as much as that comment as I typically don't care for water. For many many years, water was our only option to drink. At best, it was in some mega 400 gal water trailer or maybe in the government 5 gal jugs. But also it would be streams, rivers, and swamps; and then treated with iodine tablets. However, as we have talked in our meetings, I do drink more water now! That, plus a diet shift, has brought on great results.....and it can be done without medications! This water filtration/treatment capability that the Berkey provides is awesome! QUESTION: I assume you could use your Berkey to just scoop water out of a stream and drink it? Of course, for longevity, I assume you would maybe want to pre filter that water just to keep the larger contaminates out? QUESTION: Now that you have the travel trailer vice the van , have you looked into a larger Berkey? i.e. sized it and came up with a new storage spot , if it were bigger? As you know, our area in Ouray began in the late 1800s during the gold and silver mining rushes. Our water and sewer system isn't that old, but parts of it do go back to the early 1900s. With regards to the water system, the town doesn't know where all of the pipes are. Plus, they have discovered that the spring water is not displaying evidence of ground contamination. Our sewer system is antiquated, being over used due to the surge of tourism, and contains many types of sewer pipes. When we replaced our main sewer line, it was cast iron (holes rusting into them), Orangeburg (cardboard pipes soaked in tar; mainly used in World War II...so plant roots have grown into them), and clay (which they discovered the main city clay pipe was crushed, so everybody's waste uphill from us was going into the ground). And of course, it is 10s of millions of bucks to repair all of this; which a 1000 person town won't be able to do . So...when I say I fully expect a main water or sewer failure in the future, it is no exaggeration. Our ORV trailer is not only for fun, it is also the escape pod when a town service fails. For the record, the town is moving in a direction to repair these issues; it will just take a long time. Hence, with a Berkey type device, I literally could scoop water out of the water fall that flows behind our house. Safe travels

@@IreneIronTravels All the stainless steel portion does is hold the water. The important bits are the filters themselves. You could probably buy a square set of stainless containers from a restaurant supply store, drill the two holes for the filters, and put a 20 dollar spigot on the lower one, and have something that might be easier to store.

Thank you for this video! TOTALLY AGREE with the importance of drinking water, I drink a minimum of 64 oz. & typically more, not quite at 100 oz. though sounds like a good goal for me & easily obtainable. Initially bought the Big Berkey then realized it’d be too big when traveling in our van. I exchanged it for the Travel Berkey. Due to being a caregiver for my elderly parents have not had the chance to travel extensively as originally planned. When we did take our Berkey we haven’t been able to find a suitable way to secure it when moving. We had an incident of it coming apart & breaking the filters even though we thought we had secured it. My husband just wants to use something that’s easier to secure. We don’t have a permanent bathroom & it won’t fit in any of our cabinets. Hopefully will be able to figure out something to make traveling with the Berkey possible.

i just bought the big berkey for home and was planning on carrying it every time we leave in the rv. Here is my take, and advice or ideas appreciated but I find in a bit annoying. We left for a beach vacation and i followed the rules of setting it out on a plate to dry and set a papertowel over it, we got back home, and i did the whole priming thing but just decided to do a dye test for kicks and grins and it did not pass the dye test so berkey sent me new filters. This has me wondering if every time we take a vacation that our filters will go bad? I also find it annoying to refill every 2 days to make sure filters stay wet and that also causes me to worry and wonder if they are really doing there job. Our son is starting college football so we will be traveling every single weekend now and that puts me in the dilemma of i must carry it with us every weekend to keep them wet or i am gonna have to empty, dry and re prime every single weekend. I just wish that I had went with an under the sink mount now, install and forget it.

If you get the largest one you can afford that is also suitable for the space you have, that should suffice. The larger statement is obvious because it is less time filling and searching for water and you will soon learn how long your water will last you. The storage aspect really depends on how much space you can afford to give for your water system. As it is a fundamental need I would say bigger is better. You could always use your tanks for showering or anything that you may boil. Except being Scottish/Brittish keep your best water for tea ! Much love. Rab

Oops, I think I may have gotten my new Berkey in October and I haven't washed it out at all. I've just been peeking in to make sure there weren't any floaters or weird stuff. Err I better clean it asap. Great advice on drinking water, most people don't drink enough. I use the Berkey at home but got the Travel size for the husband and myself. We always used a Brita pitcher before and still do in our camper, barn shop, and bar fridge but upgraded to the Berkey in our kitchen. Our well water has a lot of iron and you just never know what might have crept into the groundwater :( I normally just check the reservoir before bed and put in the necessary amount of water to filter while we sleep. The small size is easy to keep next to the sink and we can take it along when we travel with the RV if we want. Great explanation on cleaning - you made it simple. My only dislike was priming the new filters, that wasn't as easy as I had hoped, but not a deal-breaker.

The carbon filters don't remove all the minerals that can be dissolved in water. It does reduce how many of those minerals are in the water though, so it's better than nothing. Much better than nothing. Berkey does sell a mineral filter which you can screw onto the bottom of the carbon filters. They sit in the lower tank though, so I don't know if that system would work for Chris and Aaron's set up, as I doubt they'd want the mineral filters submerged in their drinking water. They'd probably have to get a bigger container or drain it off faster. I don't know if the mineral filters remove sodium either, but they do remove fluorine and chlorine, and a bunch of other minerals, so it ain't gonna hurt anything if you used them. Like everything else Berkey related, they're not cheap though.

You could separate them for travel, but the lid does not fit on the bottom chamber. Also, the top chamber has the filter stems sticking out so you would have to store it upside down as well. Here's a thought for a new post. Where do you draw the line on how cold you are willing to expose your RV to without winterizing it? I've heard that you can let it drop to as low as 20 degrees without fear of freezing pipes. Does it make a difference if you are driving versus stationary? I have a class B with tank heaters. That helps the tanks but does it help with the water lines? Have you ever been on a trip and been forced to stay in weather colder than you feel comfortable with? I'm not talking physically comfortable but rather comfortable with not damaging your RV? I'm sure I'm not the only one with those questions. I even hesitate to take my Class B Era out from heated storage for service for fear it will be parked outside in subfreezing temperatures.Where should we draw the line?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 жыл бұрын
Great idea on a video. We've been in the high 20's overnight without any problems, but if it stayed below freezing for more than a couple hours I would be worried about the lines, valves, macerator pump as well. We have tank heaters too but haven't had to use them. It might help circulate the water if you pulled it through the lines, but still would be worried about it in sub zero temps! We just drive south fast!😂It shouldn't matter with driving (wind chill) as long as the ambient air temp is above freezing.

I very much enjoy your videos, thank you for doing them. They are well thought out and executed and fun to watch. I am a fan. When it comes to water filters, I am not on board. I am not saying the birkey doesn't perform and work well for you, I'm sure it does. But for me, the high cost is not justified. I can't get around the fact that Birkey doesn't submit it's units to NSF/ANSI certification testing. They have employed independent labs (Envirotek and Los Angeles County Lab) for testing, but neither of these is as rigorous as NSF/ANSI testing. Other filter companies have submitted their products, and this allows them to be compared on an equal footing to each other. I'm not saying anything Birkey is doing is wrong, but submitting to NSF/ANSI testing would allow complete comparison with other products on the market. Be well!

You can make your own system which mirrors this. There are tons of vids on youtube showing you various materials and methods. I made one for myself using ceramic candles (which are not thought to be as good as Berkey's carbon ceramic filters) and 2 crockpots. So you could get another filter from a company who you do trust, and make the same sort of system, for pretty cheap. I think the two crock pots, 5 gallon bucket i put them cost like 30 bucks all together. The ceramic candles were the most expensive part, and they were only like 25 bucks a piece.

Sorry! We filmed it and forgot to add it in! The filters come with a round rubber piece that you stick on the end of the filter and then "prime" by using a facet or hose to force water through the filter. Very easy and it takes a bout 30 seconds per filter! Keep the rubber piece for after cleaning to re prime if necessary.

Does the Berkey make your water acidic by removing minerals that keep it from being acidic? If it does, that matter since you guys are health nuts? The reason I ask is because I was using a Zero Water filter. I started getting acid reflux...probably NOT from the Zero water (probably caffeine induced). Anyway, I tested my water after it was filtered and it was on the acidic side after filtration. I've been looking at ways to put minerals back in the water that's healthy and make the water more alkaline but haven't found a solution. So now I just drink Spring water instead of filtered water. Deer Park tested to be neutral while most bottle waters tend to be on the acidic side. At least that I tested. Again, I have no idea if it matters.
@IreneIronTravels

That is some interesting points Dwayne. I can't say I know much about it but thanks for bringing it up. Something new to research! I do agree that if we could all just drink fresh spring water we wouldn't have to worry about filtering it!

How many 24 packs of water can you buy for the amount that berkey cost.....and then storing it.
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 жыл бұрын
The Berkey makes sense for us. Maybe 50 packs(24) of water if they cost 5 bucks. (249/5=49.8) So like 1,200 bottles x 16.9 oz is 20,280oz then divided by 128oz is about 158 gallons. That's about 80 days of drinking water for us instead of 5.5 years. Each Black Berkey filter is supposed to be good for 3000 gallons.
@jerrygundrum1
@jerrygundrum1 3 жыл бұрын
@@IreneIronTravels you understand that the berkey filter starts growing bacteria the second it gets wet and there is no way I would drink the water it makes after month 2 on the filter. So 5 years on a filter is a bad idea. Btw your math is flawed unless you are drinking 15 bottles a day. Who pays $5 for a 24 pack.......no one. I rarely pay more than 2 or 3 dollars.
@amydelpiere9315
@amydelpiere9315 3 жыл бұрын
Jerry G aren't you concerned about all the plastic consumption and waste from purchasing 24 packs of bottled water? Are you confident that the company profiting from bottling water is checking for over 200 contaminants and bacteria? Bottles of water often just come from someone else's tap water. (See Nestle Corp/Michigan) Everyone needs to do their best to have clean drinking water. Our approaches may not be the same.

I'm not entirely clear. Do you use water from your fresh water tank for drinking, cooking, etc., filtering it through your Berkey first? Or do you bring all your drinking water aboard from other sources, filter it through your Berkey, and only use the tank water for bathing, hand washing, use of that nature. And, either way, what's your method to treat/sanitize your fresh water tank?
@IreneIronTravels
@IreneIronTravels 3 жыл бұрын
Because our fresh tank is only 26 gallons we bring on a extra 12 gallons of water to extend our dry camping stays. So to keep things simple for the week we drink from the 12 gallons till it runs out (usually 6ish days) and then we drink from the tank. The tank water then is mostly for showering, washing dishes & hands, and the toilet. We don't really cook with water, but if we need it for something we would use the Berkey water. All water goes through a RV hose style filter and then the drinking water gets filtered a second time in the Berkey. We haven't bleached or sanitized the RV fresh tank, but we do flush it with water and completely drain it out.
@TDunstanS
@TDunstanS 3 жыл бұрын
@@IreneIronTravels Thanks for responding. I own an Interstate too (not a full-timer), and I've been avoiding drinking water from the fresh water tank, using what I bring on instead. Some say the potable coach tank is acceptable to drink, others say no. Your practice, filtering when filling the tank and filtering again with the Berkey, sounds good to me. Thanks again.

I totally get the confusion and both sides of the argument. I always think back to being a kid and drinking from random warm garden hoses in the summer time. Before bpa was a thing! As a precaution I would go with the RV Geeks method of tank sanitization.. with a bleach water mixture a couple times a year. After all they've been fulltim,ing for two decades!
