Fix For Mercedes Key FOB Not Working

Thanks a million!! My FOB for my 2005 SL 55 AMG wasn't working and I thought I had to go to the dealer and pay whatever they were going to charge to correct it. Luckily, I watched your video! I put the FOB in the ignition for a few seconds, took it out, then pressed and held the Unlock and Lock buttons together for 10 sec then pressed the Lock button 5 times and it worked! Much appreciated.

All I want to say is THANK YOU. This video saved me perhaps few hundred $ as I was never able to get a straight answer from either the dealer or any other local automotive locksmiths (the dealer wanted me to buy a new key). So one pair of my 2008 ML320 CDI key had stopped working (will not unlock nor will start the car) about 3 years back and since this is mostly a in-town car, I kept using the other working pair, until today. I followed the steps outlined in the video and found out that the 'broken' key had both the LED and the infrared sensor operational and they worked exactly as shown here. Next all I did was put the key in the ignition and within few seconds the car display showed "Key check-in in progress, please wait" message (Btw I didn't press both lock + unlock buttons prior to inserting the key in the ignition). Within seconds my 'inoperable' key came to life and now once again I have a working pair. Btw, I didn't have to change any fuse as one key was always operational. Thank you again and keep these great videos coming. God bless

4 years later and you're still saving our butts! Thank you for the video. The recalibration was perfect. Put the FOB in the ignition for a few seconds, then press and hold the Unlock and Lock button for 10 sec then press (in my case a 2000 E320) the Lock button 5 times and it worked! The flashers flashed a few times and it was recalibrated. One little thing, when I opened the door with the key, the alarm went off. I put the FOB in the ignition and it went off. Thanks again!!!

Wow! Thanks! My fob has been inoperable for 2 years. Changed the battery initially and that did nothing. I modified your instructions a bit. I actually started the engine with the inoperable fob rather than just putting the key in the ignition. I turned the car off and held the open and close buttons down on the fob simultaneously for 10 seconds. When I released, the car made 2 clicking sounds and the fob is now working.

Thank you for this...a little update. If you try the "both button hold down & 5 press on the unlock " it will reprogrammed the key..BUT...you have to put the key into the ignition and the dash will say " re-calculating" The dash will return to normal after completing and its all good from then on

Helped me with my 2009 B class, but the fuses are not in the back. Couldn't find the fuse, but fixed my key and later linked it with the car. Saved me 200 bucks

This is a great troubleshooting vid. Question is, if any of the early steps is true, how to proceed? In my case the buttons work only intermittently, so there is sometimes, but mostly not, an LED and an IR. Can the buttons themselves be repaired? I just bought this 2003 E320, it looks like the (only) fob was run over 😢

Hello I just bought myself a 2005 CLK 500 and I've been having an issue where my key sometimes will not turn so I'm in the process of cleaning the fob itself could this possibly cause the main electrical to turn off while driving and this includes the instrument cluster environment control and radio everything quits but my windows. Also oddly enough the car continues to run I have power brakes power steering and the windows of course that's it thank you.

Hello, hopefully you’ll be able to help me and respond ,also thank you much for putting out the videos, I have a SLK320 2004, I’ve recently bought the car, there are a few bugs that I am trying to get out. One of them is the key fob, I have replaced the batteries and they are positioned properly. The lights work on it, I’ve checked the fuses in the areas of the engine compartment, the left/Right sides, also next to the steering wheel, there was a diagram that said there were fuses on the passenger side right next to the globe Department did not find that, did not find any fuses in the trunk, if I saw correctly, the antenna for the fob is in the trunk did not look at that yetif all of the wires are connected to it, what else should I look at?

The only thing the batteries work is the lock/unlock/truck release. Anyway. What starts the car is when you insert your fob in the slot to start it you hear the steering wheel unlock. What that is is the EIS. It is magnetized and inside your fob at the end on the circuit board near the infrared light on one side is a copper coil which gets energized and that makes the 2 infrared boxes light up (you see it as one light on the outside via the camera as you showed) and sends info to the car verifying it’s the correct key and it unlocks the steering wheel allowing you to start you car. Part of Mercedes anti thief feature. Now my car won’t start because this copper coil is broken off on one end. I’m in process of repairing it. I’m just waiting on my solder kit to arrive via Amazon. And I’ll reattach it and hopefully it will work. Or else I have to get a new coil they sell on eBay

So for me on my 2012 ml350 the lock button on the key fob isn’t working. I see the tiny red flash light is not coming either when I press the button. All other buttons work. Does this mean that the fob has gone bad because it isn;t transmitting the infra red light?

Check the fuse first, if it is ok it SHOULD show some i signs of life by locking / unlocking the car. i was playing around with this thinking why it is not working and what are my next steps without checking main step - FUSE.

I’m having the same issue and I’ve tried everything in this video.(except having the module scanned) Also there’s not a fuse box in the rear anymore. Great video. My key fob red light works most of the time when I push the unlock button and the infrared works as well. However, neither lights work when I use the lock button. But once u switch off the dashboard lights stays one like you wanted to start ignition. One time the car started but it wont go into gear…. And after switching it off with the key it wont off ….. i had to remove the battery for it to turn off

Check the connection points to the battery to see if they are corroded ouie broken. Check to see if you've turned the battery in the wrong way.

I had the same issue yesterday but, today I was able to open my 05' SL500 with the manual key. Usually I hear the ring of the door being open but, I not this time, the dash was blank but was able to start the car and drive around the block. Hi .. I have 2006-C280 4matic. Both my key fobs looks good. Battery changed & even I synchronized keys. Issue is both Infra red key fobs sometimes work sometimes don't. Yeah bit strange but it acts funny. If it doesn't open door in first attempt then even if I try hard & multiple angles it will not start. Any idea what's issue?

Always good video, anyway my 2004 c240 sat for a week when I tried starting it .it would not but the other key worked.yet the remote for locks worked on the key that won't start it and don't work on the key key that did start it

Thank for the info, my key FOB works and then it doesn’t, come to find out the IR isn’t transmitting.

Is there a chance it is a fuse? I just checked the fuses you said to change in this video. I checked all of them and they claim they’re working. 😢😢😢😢
