Hi there we need more live sparring to testify of the efficacy of aikido techniques if we insist on the martial aspect.

You are correct, sir. I think that the principles he showed in this video appeared to be sound (though, I don't speak French.) But, most styles of aikido lack the other two things needed aside from principles; technique and execution (execution being the sparring aspect.) I don't know much about this guy or his style, maybe they spar... I've found a couple over the years, so who knows.

Live sparring.. It would mean to unleash a full power action. Look at the soulder rotating, and the movement inside the attacker. Now imagine the effects at full speed. Martial arts have a different approach of effectivness than combat sports and sparring. Here is just a few small principles that are trained out of any real situation. It's an abstract situation, to work on one specific aspect. But Aikido is about many and many other aspects, like majority of martial arts. Don't get me wrong, effectivness is important. But less as a goal than a result of hard training and dedication.

@@GaLalaPagoss Live sparring is not full power and should not be full power. With grappling you can get close, but definitely not with striking. Full power is too dangerous and should be reserved for competition or a real fight. As for your other theory, let me posit this situation: Two people, who have never played tennis before, are going to have a match. They get one month to train. One individual only practices perfecting their tennis technique. The other individual spends half the time perfecting technique, the other half practicing games of tennis. Which one would you bet on in the coming match? The one who knows good technique, but has no experience simulating a match? Or the one who has average technique, but has way more experience simulating the current situation? Having perfect technique is great... but if you've never had to pull those techniques out of your ass on the fly *in a safe environment,* what makes you believe it would happen in a real life self-defence scenario? Need to look the video in which Leo Tamaki talks about the origine of Aïkido. The mouvements of Aikido are coming from the sword. The original purpose of this martial art was to kill with the sword with most efficacity. Now we are not in war anymore, this martial art is still tought without the sword and without the same purpose as in the past, people forgot the real purpose of this martial art.

@@matsalaun I tend to agree! The training methods of kendo, kenjutsu, modern jiu-jitsu, judo, traditional jujutsu and aikido combined could produce a set of skills similar to the samurai of old (minus the polearms, bow, arquebus, etc...) The way these skill-sets interact with each other is important. If more dojo included all of this training under one roof, it would resemble the direction HEMA is going... and it might not be a bad idea to be informed by their training methods as well. Fencing masks are great for all kinds of weapon sparring!
