Who said that learning languages is all about learning words, grammar and sentences?! Languages are musical! There are tons of sounds that native speakers usually use that are different from those known to us. Sounds, unlike words, don't carry the baggage of identity. We can play around with sounds like costumes: try them on, have a laugh and see whether we keep on using them or not.
Today I'm excited to present you with a collection of 7 Finnish sounds! These sounds are carefully curated from real life and can be used at your leisure. Just insert them into different situations and watch what happens! ;)

Very interesting take on these. I like your descriptions and think they're very well thought out and described, except for a teeny tiny disagreement with the inhaled "joo" and "nii". I'm not sure if it's a regional thing, or even smaller "my group of friends act this way"-thing, but I've come to associate this inhaled version of "joo" and "nii" to a sense of impatience. Like I agree with you, but please get to the point or oh my god I know this already and agree, tell me something I don't know. So inhaled versions of this are less positive in connotation, where the exhaled versions are positive and reinforcing. Also quite funny that the YT algorithm decided to present this to me three years after it was put up. I wonder why. Regardless, interesting content!

Funny: quite some of these also exist in German, and the meaning there is just the same...

Öööööööööööööööööööööööö let me think. Maybe "Nii-i." With the additional "i" in the end you agree a bit more. Strange how pondering sounds or getting hurt sounds also differ by the languages. Au! Is also a common alternative to Ai! "Hyi" can also be scolding of naughty behavior, "yök" is when you see or experience something disgusting that almost makes you puke.

aa-aa is Finnish baby talk for "go to sleep" (a bit older gets nati-nati) Another interesting one: Also: tutii (baby) sleeps; tuudittaa (Parent) makes (the baby) sleep; tutti (pacifier) Now why does English use such a complex sounding word for a /baby/ item?

Haha I use 'miu mau' as a response to someone telling me to do something and I'm not about to. Miu is a high tone, mau is a low tone. (Finnish cat says miu or mau) Huvittava äännähdys on juuri tuo sisäänpäin vedetty äänne sanalla 'tjuuuu' eli 'kyllä'. * ingressive speech

hehe in my life the first one is the most pronounced :D whenever someone is doing that, I am calling them out :D because for me that is jusssssst aaa annoying :D . I am likeee , heeeey don't do that :D but hey, I watched your Ted talk and I heard you speaking (Fin) which is awesome.. but more I looked, more I noticed, you have never mentioned your learning style.. How did you manage to learn Finnish in such fluency. For me I struggle with the traditional way, for example I am unable to have any knowledge of Grammar... I have no idea about English grammar as well, it just flows.. So do you have any advice for meeee? and do you teach? in real life I mean.. :) Thaaaanks

Haha the 'joo' is here to stay! If you find it annoying, try exploring why this is and question your perception/definition of annoying. That way it'll start bothering you less and less. It takes a bit of effort since our level of what's normal is relative but when we're in an environment that's different to the one we grew up in, this comes up over and over again. I also struggle with this sometimes too in so many situations! It's a humbling process. As for learning Finnish, I believe in everyone finding their own style while also understanding the process of learning a language, because each one of us is going to learn differently in the end. I'm teaching this in my language coaching program, launching next week! You can find more details here: irinapravet.com/finnish-language-coaching/
