“If there’s anything I know about Gaelic, it’s that the letters do not correspond to the sounds” Well actually, they do, the letters just make different sounds in Irish than in English. It’s almost like looking at a Korean character and saying “That looks like an S, therefore it must make that sound.” No it doesn’t, it’s a different language so it makes an R or an L sound.

could also indicate their grandparents immigrated from Ireland. Most of the time when immigrants would come to the US in the 1800s, which if your ancestors are from Ireland is most likely because of the 1840 great famine, they would often settle in certan regions based on cultural groups. for me 3 of my grandparents are German decent from the midwest centered on Iowa and my grandfather on my moms side is from Boston entirely Irish decent based on dna.

Slight explanation: The term Irish-American doesn’t mean you claim Irish nationality. It just means you were born in America but are of Irish descent. It’s a term used to describe ethnicity, not nationality, because terms for ethnicity work differently in the states.
@XXXTENTAClON227
@XXXTENTAClON227 2 жыл бұрын
It’s immensely confusing because most Irish Americans will be just as English, Scottish and Welsh. You can’t really trace it because of how many different tribes settled (for example, French and German DNA will probably just be Anglo-Norman or Anglo-Saxon) and Irish DNA could just be Brittonic. Even more confusing since Irish people will often live in Great Britain and vice versa, but at one point they were literally the SAME COUNTRY for an entire century under the United Kingdom. That’s why it’s much easier to separate it by “British Isles”, and no this isn’t Anglicised, that’s what the Romans saw them as so any bitter Irish can complain to them instead

Well....that’s where you are wrong. While I agree these people are not culturally Irish, they are genetically and ethnically Irish. That is something that is not up for debate. Ethnicity and nationality are two VERY different things. And if you judge Irish people based off of “Irish culture”, you’d find that most people born in Ireland aren’t “Irish”. Irish Americans are Irish just as much as German Americans are German. Or Italian Americans are Italian. Or Spanish Americans are Spanish. They belong to an ethnic group known as “Irish people”. Whether you like it or not, they are just as Irish as a person born in Ireland. Just because they don’t hold an Irish passport doesn’t mean they magically become “ethnic Americans “.

They have no reason to know that much about Ireland at this point if their family has been assimilated for 100+ years. Most people in most places don't know that much REALLY about other places besides what they see and absorb through media anyway. There are also plenty of Americans who do actually know extensively about the world and are quite well traveled but go ahead and generalize all Americans, totally not ironic.
