Another little bonus for the Irish is when traveling to the United States. Ireland has US pre-clearance facilities at Irish international airports which means you don't have to go through passport control or customs checks when you arrive in the United Sates. Flights arriving from Ireland are treated as domestic flights which means that on arrival you can just pick up your bag and walk out the door. It's a fantastic advantage if you need to catch a connecting flight or you're otherwise pressed for time. Aer Lingus flights to Chicago arrive at Terminal 3 (domestic terminal) instead of the usual terminal 5 which is for international flights. It saves you from having to go from terminal 5 to terminal 3 for connecting flights or to get the CTA trains to Chicago. It's a win win all round.

My british passport is expiring in 2026. I've applied for an Irish passport. I was born and raised in Glasgow to Donegal born parents. I'm an Irish citizen by law. Never called myself british. brexit racism and blue passports not for me.

with regards to uk passport holder- “You do not need a visa for short trips to the EU or countries in the Schengen area if both of the following apply: you're staying for 90 days or less in a 180-day period. you're visiting as a tourist or for certain other reasons.”

I didn't know that about naturalized Irish citizens. I thought once an Irish citizen always an Irish citizen. I think the system makes sense too. I'm Irish by birth so I could never have my citizenship taken away from me. They're stuck with me I'm afraid.

Your coverage of the Irish citizenship was very good. I have a question. If somebody were to become a citizen of Ireland under the non dorm category, is the person exempt from paying taxes that people otherwise would have to pay? In Ireland taxes are very high up in the 40 percent mark.

@pattralee 9 ай бұрын
There is no non dom in Ireland. Its being axed in the UK and in any case was based on your fathers place of birth outside the UK. On the taxation side of things you are allowed to physically be in Ireland 280 days over 2 years subject to a max 183 days in any one year and be non resident for tax purposes and not be taxed on foreign income. But you are taxed on Irish sourced income.

Why review the CTA? I thought Uk needed foreign workers. Plus, all the great literature and music comes from Ireland or those with Irish descent.

Great video. One thing I'll add is that Irish citizens can get a passport CARD in addition to a passport booklet. It's a little like EU national ID cards but it's voluntary (you pay a bit extra for it) and you can use it to travel anywhere in the EU or UK, so you don't need to carry your passport booklet. I travel all the time from UK to France to Spain with just my passport card in my wallet. Super handy. Other EU citizens can't use their national ID card to enter the UK (except if they have pre-settled or settled status). I don't think anyone has actually ever been deprived of Irish citizenship after naturalising as a citizen so for me that's basically a theoretical downside. When you naturalise you affirm that you're planning to stay in Ireland but not if you're claiming citizenship by descent (totally separate process) and in any case nobody is losing their citizenship because of it.

Exactly why the CTA arrangements need to be cancelled!

The rule is not there for general purpose use. It's just another legal excuse the government can use to revoke your passport if you become an embarrassment to the state. It can only be applied to naturalized citizens.

Irish citizens can also vote in the UK elections and referenda that is partially reciprocated where UK citizens can vote in Ireland except for referenda and Presidential elections which is reserved solely for citizens.

The best reason why the CTA must be cancelled by the U.K.!

You still have to be actually resident in the country to register to vote. There are lots of other European countries who are allowed to vote in England and NI as well, because we have bi-lateral agreements with those countries. Resident passport holders of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Spain for example (Scotland and Wales are even more generous). So sole British passport holders who live in those countries can also vote in their elections, so long as resident. Seems eminently fair to me. You live/work/retire in a country and so you contribute financially and socially; therefore you should be allowed a say in how it’s run.

Most people wouldn't take out Irish Citizenship, or get an Irish passport, if it didn't include European union citizenship, or access to Britain through the common travel area. The British government are trying to curtail immigration, and the Irish government are giving out Irish citizenship, and passports like confetti at a wedding, thus allowing access to Britain. The C.T.A. may be reviewed. If the C.T.A. goes, there will be less demand for an Irish passport.

Actually only 2% of foreigners in Ireland get citizenship.
@stuartmcconnachie
@stuartmcconnachie 5 ай бұрын
Nope. Because the majority of the applications for Irish citizenship comes from the UK (in recent years one might assume driven by their desire to regain their access to the EU), and not other foreign nationals trying to gain access to CTA. I’ve seen some estimates it’s as high as 10% of UK nationals might be eligible for Irish passport via descent. You do realise the UK also has citizenship by investment programs as well, right? Most European countries do as well.

If your grandmother and your dad are still alive you can get their birth certificates and get a DNA test to prove you're his son. That might resolve the issue. Talk with the Irish passport people and explain your situation to them as they'll be best placed to point you in the right direction. Wear an Irish Rugby shirt to the interview, it might help 🙂
